TTFT: Miami ’09 & March Madness

12.29.09 - Miami, FL (Wendy Rogell)

As we finish our audio retrospective of 2009, today brings us to Miami. Riding the cresting momentum of fall tour’s back end, there was a sense that something special would happen down south. Heading to the proximity of Big Cypress ten years later and back to American Airlines Arena six years later, plenty of memories and anticipation hung in the air. And when the band left Miami, they had found a new sense of musical purpose, bringing their playing to a new level while inspiring the community and making the future look brighter than ever. Mike had been using his envelope filter more and more towards the end of fall, and in a New Year’s Run in which he was the undeniable leader, the effect was prominent in many of the jams. Achieving a new level of musical density, Phish was hitting on all cylinders as the calendar turned to 2010. Today’s playlist is comprised entirely of Miami highlights. Stay tuned from a trip through 2010 starting tomorrow.

    I cannot get behind Alumni over Antelope… If you take overall body of work it is not even a discussion and kind of surprised to hear others say differently. Not a big 3.0 Mike’s fan, not sure who really is outside of maybe people who only have seen 3.0 shows, but it is still one of if the not the most quintessential powerhouse jamming of Phish. Antelope vs. Stash is a very hard fought battle…

    Walnut Creek is easily my favorite but I’m horribly biased since I was there and took my little bro for his first show. Without question the best single set I’ve ever witnessed.

    But there is such a deep pool of ’97 to choose from (though I don’t know how much was video recorded) that it would seem like a never ending resource. If there are Europe vids I would be overjoyed.

  3. Al Says:

    I wish they treated Timber and Mike’s song as a real jam vehicle again. Timber tends to end after 5:10 min and Mike’s after 8:25…
    Begging for a Timber as set II opener in summer…

    just spun some TAB 2.19.2011 Sand and now have a ragin, shorty Piper from MSG 2010. getting very excited for AC. one more chance to birth your expectations, dance, smile, and let it all hang out.

    Just throw your hands in the air and wave em like you just don’t care!

    If it was good enough for Lenin, its good enough for Page.

  6. Al Says:

    I guess the 97 ampitheater shows were all videotaped because of the lawn screen monitors. Walnut Creek is also my fave.

    Still believe they should offer three shows for a “next release” and let the fans vote. That would bring a huge hype…

  7. Kaveh Says:

    12.29.09: This was really good too:

    Gotta Jibboo> Wilson> Gotta Jibboo> Heavy Things

  8. DryIceFactory Says:

    @Al

    What really bugs me was that it seems like it was SUPPOSED to be jammed at UIC. It was supposed to be the centerpiece of that elements set and it got dropped in favor of Undermind. Then they dropped it early in the 2nd set of the 3rd night and I’m assuming the intent was to jam it? We will probably get a big one this summer. A few almost went the distance this past summer. (Bethel and Alpharetta come to mind)

  9. kayatosh Says:

    does 12.27.2010 Bowie get any love in these parts? A thrilling high wire act, old school frenetic intensity. $$$

  10. Al Says:

    @DryIceFactory

    yeah, and I liked Page’s organ sound on it cause it sounded like the Floyd in ’71. Timber perfectly offers a psychedelic jam>dissonant guitar>tension>release jam. Love that – should be around 12-14 min…;-)

  11. verno329 Says:

    Great idea Al! A vote from a list of candidates for the next release would be a cool concept.

  12. Al Says:

    Still have the Worcester 2010 Hood and the EPIC(!!) Ghost MSG 2010 in my mind. Gotta check the Bowie..

  13. Jtran Says:

    @kaya

    I loved the 1/1/11 Bowie – forgot that was the song they played twice over 2010 NYE run.

    1/1 version reminds me of classic, frantic, high energy versions

  14. Dr Pronoia Says:

    99 alpine fluffhead

    (since dude wasnt here to pimp it)

  15. DryIceFactory Says:

    +37 to putting releases to vote from now on. Imagine if tomorrow a poll dropped that put 9/4/11, 5/28/11 and 6/17/11 to a fan vote? My money goes on 5/28/11. If only to see the crowd reaction to Golden Ginteca

  16. DryIceFactory Says:

    @JTran

    And #line

  17. DryIceFactory Says:

    My vote references a to Blu-ray, errr… DVD, release.

  18. thedayman Says:

    12/29/94 bowie. but y’all already knew that. i <3 this jam.

  19. Al Says:

    exactly – Bethel #line was great!

  20. lumpyhead Says:

    would probably have to go with 9/4/11. But that’s a tricky one.

  21. viola Says:

    dont sleep on the timber>fee from star.lake

    timber jam is based all on trey hitting harmonics and its truly unique.

  22. Al Says:

    Little test:
    “Shapiro Fall 97 release voting”

    candidates:
    Auburn Hills 12/06/97
    Philly 12/02/97
    Bryce Jordan 12/09/97

    for me, that would be a tough one…

  23. litteringand Says:

    Champagne 97

  24. garretc Says:

    Really? Alumni over Antelope? I mean, I suppose that’s your prerogative, but point out to me just one Alumni that’s better than 12/6/97. Then another that’s better than Desert Sky ’97. And another that’s better than Murat ’94. And another that’s better than the Tinley Park ’93 Antelope > Sparks > Walk Away > Antelope > Have Mercy > Antelope. And… I’ll stop there.

    But seriously, Alumni over Antelope is like saying Jibboo and Reba are the same jam…

  25. lumpyhead Says:

    well I mean it totally depends on what you’re thinking of… if it’s like what you want to hear at your first show this summer, I can understand… but if it’s like all time track record vs. track record then that answer (like most of them) is pretty obvious.
