TTFT: Miami ’09 & March Madness

12.29.09 - Miami, FL (Wendy Rogell)

As we finish our audio retrospective of 2009, today brings us to Miami. Riding the cresting momentum of fall tour’s back end, there was a sense that something special would happen down south. Heading to the proximity of Big Cypress ten years later and back to American Airlines Arena six years later, plenty of memories and anticipation hung in the air. And when the band left Miami, they had found a new sense of musical purpose, bringing their playing to a new level while inspiring the community and making the future look brighter than ever. Mike had been using his envelope filter more and more towards the end of fall, and in a New Year’s Run in which he was the undeniable leader, the effect was prominent in many of the jams. Achieving a new level of musical density, Phish was hitting on all cylinders as the calendar turned to 2010. Today’s playlist is comprised entirely of Miami highlights. Stay tuned from a trip through 2010 starting tomorrow.

@voopa I think the April ’92 run made it as an 8 seed in the Shit region.

    That’s just fun to type.

  2. Mr.Miner Says:

best run bracket could use some adjustment imo.

  3. verno329 Says:

    I know OPT isn’t a big fan of 3.0 but Bethel as a 16 against NYE ’95? And Dick’s against Hampton/W-S ’97? Ouch

  4. marcoesq Says:

Yeah, like taking Camden ’03 all the way through IT is a little weird

  5. Dr Pronoia Says:

Nice Rob. I’m frequently struck by my ability to almost always find something to identify with and like about individual people, especially the more you learn of their stories, and yet in aggregate I kind of hate people and the way they/we are

  6. Mr. Palmer Says:

One of the highlight from the Miami ’09 run, from couch tour, was Neemor calling the Demand.

Perhaps the greatest call i’ve ever heard. Fucking Neemor. Miss that guy.

  7. Mr.Miner Says:

like taking Camden ’03 all the way through IT is a little weird

    ^ that is a great rum, however…

  8. lumpyhead Says:

listening to that auburn hills antelope…

crazy the difference tweenxt a 95 antelope and a 97 antelope.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

’m frequently struck by my ability to almost always find something to identify with and like about individual people, especially the more you learn of their stories,

^ seeing that we are all made of one universal consciousness, this makes total sense…but I digress.

  10. verno329 Says:

Seeding wise I totally agree Miner. 3.0 pulling tough draws and Japan ’00 getting jobbed. I see 12/2-3/97 making a Cinderella run.

  11. marcoesq Says:

no doubt, but just taking random runs of shows is kind of going against the whole purpose

  12. lumpyhead Says:

    solid.

  13. SillyWilly Says:

    @Robear

Sartre said quite insightfully (I always thought):

    “Hell is other people.”

it’s always said tongue in cheek. But, I don’t think it was meant to be sarcastic. Maybe darkly humorous – sardonic at it’s most hopeful.

I think it fits in with all of his other ideas about existence being horror and freedom being the undeniable fact of life and the horrible nausea that comes with realizing that we are responsible for the state of our society

(and there’s No Exit. ok I am being funny)

but you’re probably in good company if you find yourself thinking like ol’ JP Sartre.

Nausea is a hell of a novel, by the way. Kinda fits our scene and the malaise of the time, no doubt.

especially those of us feeling crazy

  14. marcoesq Says:

Forgot they played Demand. What a run

  15. marcoesq Says:

Listening back again through Miner’s Venues of Summer Mix

This It’s Ice from 9.20.00 is always great

  16. SillyWilly Says:

Hate and Love have got to be connected, I always think.

If you didn’t love you couldn’t hate.

Unless, of course, hate has become so institutionalized that we no longer feel it. It’s become traditional, so now we just do it.

  17. Mr palmer Says:

Guyute711 — what happened to Fab Melo? Out for the whole tourney? Guess I need to change my bracket.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    uh oh, g711.
    no fab?
    buh-bye, ‘cuse.
    thanks for coming.

  19. verno329 Says:

Yikes G$$$! No Fab Melo for tourney according to a bunch of people on Twitter

  20. MiA Says:

“I’ve recently realized / accepted that it’s okay, to simultaneously love life in general, but hate people in general. (present company not included). I feel much more at peace now.”

Life is fantastic. It is filled with great people, assholes, greedy people, generous people, intelligent people, stupid people, opinionated people, disinterested people, winners, losers, facists, socialists, power hungry, submissives, dominants, naive, wise, glory, failure, depression, elation, dreamers, realists etc.

I know, because I’ve been them all. And for 1/2 of those times I was the negative side, I deserve to be disliked.

Guys like Sartre took himself too seriously IMO. Guys like Oscar Wilde, probably not enough.

I could quote Wilde all day long, because I find him the most sardonic.

I am not young enough to know everything.
    Oscar Wilde

  21. butter Says:

    word thx T3

lifes dealt me a stressful hand as of late and my ole faithful – the Phish – is still here for me 😉

  22. MiA Says:

If there was less sympathy in the world, there would be less trouble in the world.

    Oscar Wilde

  23. Guyute711 Says:

WTF, why in the fuck can’t they keep their big men for the tourney. This is two straight 1 seeds that have lost the man in the middle. I am so fucking pissed right now.

  24. Kaveh Says:

@G711: He has got eligibility issues.

  25. Kaveh Says:

Despite earning a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament, Syracuse now faces an uphill battle in their quest for a national title.

The Orange (31-2) announced on their website Tuesday that sophomore center Fab Melo will not participate in the tournament due to an “eligibility issue.

“Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, no further details can be provided at this time,” the site said.
