Split Open and Melt -> Catapult” 12.31.99 I, Big Cypress, FL

One of the top highlights from Big Cypress—an all-time great.

Reba” 6.13.94 II Kansas City, KS

1994 and “Reba,” a match made in heaven. Here is another stellar version.

Ghost” 8.7.98 I, Raleigh, NC

A first set bomb after the rain stopped at Walnut Creek ’98.

Piper” 8.8.98 II, Columbia, MD

As Phish came back from Europe, after dropping Prague’s 7/6/98 version, “Piper” continued to expand.

Tweezer” 11.3.96 II, Gainesville, FL

A groovy and percussive version with Karl Perazzo; two shows after “Remain In Light” you can already hear the influence of the album’s style.

YEM -> Izabella” 7.26.97 II, Austin, TX

Everyone knows “Tweezabella,” but do you know her sister “YEMabella?”

Stash” 11.13.97 II, Las Vegas, NV

Phish dropped this mammoth “Stash” on the first night of Fall ’97. Funk, what?

Been to shows sober, Showber, and completely mangled….

I certainly retain more from the sober/showber shows. It’s cool to wake up the next day and not feel like your going to die either.

  2. albert walker Says:

I’d rather be beaten, kidnapped, and dragged to an arcade fire show then see a 3.0 show completely sober
but herb and L are sacraments not drugs yo

anyone that hasn’t heard the new Lee Fields – Faithful Man
    fuckin get it
    it’s sick
    laterz comrades

  3. Phamily Berzerker Says:

And we could all die tomorrow…

  4. verno329 Says:

Speaking for myself, I will puff at shows if I have the chance but it makes no difference to me if I don’t. I rarely have more than 2 or 3 beers in the lot and almost never drink once inside the venue. The music experience is my buzz and any enhancements are unnecessary.

But listening to recordings I greatly prefer some accoutrements and it enhances the experience. I can get “there” without assistance but if given the choice I’m baned. Its like the exact opposite for me from being at the show.

  5. albert walker Says:

i never listen to early commodores sober

but I’m lifted to all shit on this OG ear wax

    and bumpin some Machine Gun!

I actually love how JB sells no booze. Like PB said you actually recall the set list and specific moments. I hate the fact that many a set II in 3.0 have been a blur to me. Damned alcohol. That never happened to me in 1.0 (too poor and/or young) or 2.0 (coke was more my bag at that time).

  7. Duder Says:

for me, just puffin’ @ a Phish show is going sober.
    I realy like getting lifted.
Not crazy, but I do like how it opens up my ears/head.
trip @ 90% of the shows I attend and retain almost all of it.
certain things I can remember like yesterday, others just slip on by

  8. Duder Says:

    I commend PB

dude is up at the crack of dawn for a run, takes yoga sometimes twice a day. cat has gotta be in shape.

  9. willowed Says:

I love the games the music/jam plays with me when I’m spun.

There’s a certain freeness to it all, I can totally let myself go. But at some points I go form being totally free to having a battle inside your head.

    The ride is so exciting.

Being on the edge, looking over, then coming back is one thing that Phish can only do to me thru their music.

  10. MiA Says:

I’d go to shows for sure if they were jamming like this … well all of today’s picks, but my preference is to chemically relax a bit. Same with golf really. And business meetings. And long conversations with Mrs MiA. And my parents.

  11. kenny powers Says:

Yeah strong work PB. Might be calling on you for some sage advice sooner than later.

  12. willowed Says:

Jams that are open and clean like th 1/1 Twist Simple and Sally really move the shit out of me when spun.

Still think that 1/1/11 set 2 was pure magic

  13. RoosterPizza Says:

I like to have 2-3 beers in the lot and puff in the show. I did the “let’s get destroyed in the lot” thing for a couple of shows, and it was not that fun. Drinking heavily before a show is headache central for me. I must admit though, I am not so interested in not smoking at a show. Maybe that is indicative of some other problem, or maybe it is just as simple as it is more enjoyable to smoke at a show, for me.

  14. Duder Says:

I do have to say that a few beers in the lost @ DSGP2 2 of Leo’s caramels and a few pre-rolls, I felt like I was trippin’

  16. Phamily Berzerker Says:

All I know is what worked for me. Everybody is different. Achieved stage one weight target today just a few day past the goal date.

  17. kenny powers Says:

Dude I could live off a diet of half of one of Dump’s sweet tarts every 6 hours. Like doctors’ orders.

  18. kenny powers Says:

Hahaha! “dump” should have been Sumo.

  19. stapes Says:

  20. stapes Says:

Haha @ duder I’m right there with you re: dicks 2.

Those wonderful Leo creations treated me well that night and the next. Not necessarily jumping off the deep end with the sweet tarts but was nice nonetheless

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

I would much rather see Phish sober than be beaten and dragged to an Arcade Fire show… those are the only two options?

  22. kenny powers Says:

Totally Stapes! It’s so frustrating sometimes how nowadays theyll play their most daring shit in soundchecks or late night sets. Human nature I suppose.

  23. Mr. Palmer Says:

I want a leo caramel in AC! Sounds good.

  24. halcyon Says:

I want to go to AC.

  25. willowed Says:

I want more sweet tarts in AC
