TTFM: Turning It Up—Fall 2010

10.30.10—Atlantic City, NJ (Dave Lavery)

Following a festival slot at Austin City Limits, Phish’s fall tour of 2010 began in earnest with an intimate three-night stand a Broomfield, Colorado. While these shows didn’t hold up as tour highlights come, they were a solid starter pack for what would be the band’s best 3.0 tour to that point. This tour contained several indelible trends, and the first began in Broomfield—”Light” as a vehicle for quickened groove. What had been primarily an abstract and “ambient”-slanted jam, transformed in Broomfield, upping the song’s potential for improv, and several stellar versions would follow. Another Fall trend was the transformation of “Carini” into a blissed out jam. The band took the demonic piece and continuously flipped it upside down, transforming its path into melodic realms. Finally, durng Fall 2010, “Sand” evolved from a platform for guitar fireworks into a whole-band jam, and was a centerpiece of fall. Surrounding these metamorphoses, Phish’s musical efficiency and proficiency both soared, but the band’s lock-step jamming didn’t fully click until their second performance in Charleston. From that point, Phish traveled north for the rest of the tour—two weeks that saw the band’s consistency return like never before in this era. Less Amherst, the band ran off a stretch standout performances in Augusta, Utica, Providence, Manchester, and three in AC. When this tour ended, the community was flying high as the band seemed destined for greatness again. Today’s playlist—featuring a few more than ten tracks—brings us back though the hottest stretch of Fall 2010.

2012 Champion: “YOU ENJOY MYSELF”

"You Enjoy Myself"

From Trey is My Friend: “Congratulations to “You Enjoy Myself!” You have won the 2012 Phish March Madness tournament! What a final game… there were probably 20+ lead changes with both teams refusing to bow out without a fight. “Tweezer” was up by 5 votes with 15 minutes to go but “YEM” was able to scrap back in the final few ticks and win by a score of 546-540. Wow! what a great way to finish an amazing tournament. Thank you all so much for making it so fun and so interesting. I’m kinda sad it’s all over :tear: but I’m so happy it was an exciting finish. Thank you once again for voting over and over again and keeping things interactive. Cheers everyone!”

Thanks for participating!

  1. jamesbondo Says:

Someone please tally my vote for Tweezer. I’ve voted in all the rounds so far, but now that its on Facebook (which I am not a part of, nor do I want to be), I cannot vote in the final round.

    Tweezer!

  2. willowed Says:

I am throwing a sympathy vote towards YEM. I don’t want it to be too much of a blood bath.

YEM is no match for Tweezer

  3. gavinsdad Says:

Fall 10 def stepped up. Thanks Mr Miner.

i’m not bracketing but i’m with @Willowed. Tweez has the face melting edge here.

  4. DryIceFactory Says:

Ah yes. A TTFM based on the tour that sparked my interest in Phish tour in earnest (only had a few shows up to 10/26/10) and only 10 Monday’s left til Worcester. Is it too early to discuss potential Worcester openers? I’m going with either Bathtub, Sand or YEM as my top 3. Would LOVE to see it be Sand.

  5. BTB Says:

I don’t think we’ll ever get a C&P as good as Charleston – that’s the go to version in my book.

Agree on Spanish Moon….the band probably would assist to the have at least the horns though

  6. DryIceFactory Says:

    Love that Augusta Light.

  7. litteringand Says:

Spanish Moon>Ghost>Steam, a man can dream can’t he?

  8. dyda Says:

like we didn’t see it coming down to yem v tweezer. i like how it’s louisville v kentucky

what a special two weeks the end of oct 10 was. so many great memories, so many awesome rooms. my friend & i were literally jumping up & down with excitement when they brought that melt back around to wrap up. one of the few times i’ve been so uncontrollably stoked

there was a bit at either the end of ghost or mango where mike was waiting to tell fish what song to segue into next but fish was zoned out with his eyes closed so mike just waited patiently for a good 30-45 seconds & then simply mouthed one word & off we went

it is difficult to choose between the augusta & manchester lights. the alumni groove was bumpin, but the digital delay loop jam was abstract/ambient in all the right ways. i really like how they brought back the ddl progression & started exploring it. the folks i was at the show with said that they could clearly pick me out of the crowd (floor, of course, just a little closer to the stage) as i was like the only person dancing along at that point. also see the jones beach light from that summer

  9. sumodie Says:

Fall ’10: 9 straight shows all within 5.5 hours of home….sigh…..those were the days

    and I even enjoyed Amherst

    ***
my GD kick continued yesterday with 12.05.79 Uptown Theatre, Chicago and now on to a Bobby b-day show, 10.16.81 Amsterdam

Both are part of Hunter’s Trix matrix series -grabbing more of those today

  10. dyda Says:

i was standing next to the guy with the ‘i been around’ sign second set 10.16. made my way behind the stage during the vocal jam & watched the encore from back there. cool to look out & see him get his request. plus a rockin’ quinn

more ga venues, please. pretty please. i don’t care if we’re sweating our balls off if it means indoor during summer. the venues that tour gave things such a retro vibe. it was a much purer phish going experience & clearly the way it’s meant to be done. i was beside myself when i walked into the augusta civic center. stepped into a time warp. phish at the high school gym

the aud was literally sweating at setbreak. hot opening frame for sure. i really haven’t relistened to guyutica since. the memory is so special that while i know i will revisit it eventually, still all this time since i’m holding off cause it was just that much of a peak experience

  11. dyda Says:

re: btb – i humbly submit 7.29.03 crosseyed as a competetor to 10.16.10

  12. lastwaltzer Says:

Fall ’10. I was sick as a dog the week that Reba dropped and was not listening to the shows. Remember seeing reports come in from Utica, Augusta, Providence. Needless to say it was a treat to hear those all in a row when I was up for it.

  13. dyda Says:

oh & hey, by the way, i get to see the flecktones tonight!

  14. mia Says:

Tweezer vs YEM tops the lame battle for what “phans” will do to entertain themselves and push “song competition” out there.

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

i dunno, mia. we should set up a bracket to decide whether that one is the tops in the battle or not.

  16. Kaveh Says:

Morning BBers. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

  17. DryIceFactory Says:

And I dont think that Jamchester Ghost is mentioned often for the same reason the Split sanwhich isnt mentioned often. Just too much goodness in the show to mention it without mentioning the whole product.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

if you happen to see anything cuter than this today, let me know. can’t wait til the little disorder unit is ready to strap some planks on

  19. Robear Says:

“RnR > Carini” from Prov, still one of my favorite jam segments since the return. Replace “My Prob Right There” with almost any good set 2 song, and Prov could have been an epic set.

I’ve never seen the band play such a good show, (Prov) followed by two stink bombs, (won’t mention them)

  20. Yalta Balt Says:

This by far was Phish’s peak of 3.0 leading into the NYE run.

  21. marcoesq Says:

    morning all. great picks, miner

  22. DryIceFactory Says:

just realized we porbably should have seen AC Jibboo make this list, even though it wasnt type II

  23. poop goblin Says:

    pure fire 10/30/2010

Chalk Dust Torture -> Whole Lotta Love > Chalk Dust Torture, Ha Ha Ha, Walk Away, Wolfman’s Brother-> Undermind > Bathtub Gin

    great chunk of set I

  24. RoosterPizza Says:

BTB, even over the Coral Sky C&P? The charleston version is great, but the coral sky version is a monster.

  25. SillyWilly Says:

I had an absolute blast in AC.

gonna be there on Bader field this year, too.

    hopefully AC will deliver again
