Ten For Tuesday

Bethel Woods (Michael Mesenbourg)

Mike’s Song -> Breathe Jam ” 10.25.95 II, St.Paul, MN

A relic from the day when “Mike’s Song” had jams. In this Fall ’95 incarnation, Trey annihilates the opening segment moving to his mini kit as the band moves further and further into experimental territory. Slipping into abstraction, they pass smoothly into an instrumental interpretation of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe.”

Simple > McGrupp” 10.26.96 II, Charlotte, NC

This is but one of many standout “Simples” along the road of Fall ’96, and served as the centerpiece of Charlotte’s Fall ’96 stop.

Weekapaug -> Mango Song” 11.25.94 II, Chicago, IL

Concluding our patchwork “Mike’s Groove,” here is the unique segue and song pairing that followed “Harpua” at UIC in Fall ’94.

My Left Toe -> Whipping Post” 7.25.99 II, Noblesville, IN

In a stunning piece of first-set improvisation, Phish built their abstract Summer ’99 vehicle into a legit take on the Allman’s classic. This jam came out of nowhere at the beginning of the show at Deer Creek, foreshadowing one of Summer ’99’s best outings.

Tweezer -> Makisupa” 10.22.95 II, Champaign, IL

Another buck-wild, Fall ’95 throwdown to follow up yesterday’s “Tweezer” from the same tour.

Stash” 12.5.97 II, Cleveland, OH

Behind the dance-party funk of Fall, “Stash” made a huge splash every time it dropped. Here is the second set opener of the consistently underrated show from Cleveland State. Though this version doesn’t stray too far from structure, it absolutely slays from start to finish.

    Whipping Post FTW!

Total bust out, taboot.* Rumor at the time was that Trza was going through some marital strife at the time. Who knows? Probably BS. Don’t even remember where I heard that. All I know is that he crushes that Whipping Post.

    * Last 3 times played:
    – 7/25/99
    – 8/10/96
    – 4/20/93

What can I say? I’m a custy for a good bust out, especially, one that shreddy.

  2. kayatosh Says:

that whole 7.25.99 show is $$$

  3. ma Says:

    there u go!

  4. Selector J Says:

    @kaya – Indeed. Cash $$$.

Good luck with tickets, folks. I’ve got a feeling I can wait on a (potential) OKC Zoo ticket.

  5. kenny powers Says:

wish wish wish i could do that southern weekend…don’t think the funds will be padded enough.

  6. MiA Says:

My expectation is zero BGCC tickets for MiA.

  7. Chonz Says:

I have a hold for about $66 less than my total order (St. Louis, OKC, and Dicks), so I figure I got shut out of either St. Louis or OKC.

  8. kenny powers Says:

the trees are greening quickly in Worcester, folks! Bring the heat June 7+8!!!

Do not understand why no Fall Tour for the second year in a row. Doesn’t make sense to me at all.

They should spend the summer in the western 11 states and the southeast and then just hit the northeast and mid-west each fall. That way, when school is in session, they could play Thursday through Saturday and spend Sunday night through Wed night with the kiddos. How hard could that be?

It would double the # of shows they could give us. Enough of this back and forth across the nation business.

  10. MiA Says:

Mid year review in a few minutes. Kinda worried about this one.

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    be the ball, mia.

  12. [Not Tom] Says:

reviews at most companies are pre-decided with the interview being a mere formality. They’ve already decided what percentage raises are to be given out, if at all. All you can ever do is threaten to leave if you feel you’ve got that leverage.

  13. punkmug Says:

Woot! got a max hold for my GA Floors for the first two nights of Dicks! Hope everyone else has has good luck on their requests.

  14. dorn76 Says:

They don’t want to play as much together, for whatever reasons @NT. What other explanation could there be?

  15. [Not Tom] Says:

^ They should spend some time writing new songs together. They can’t rely on the back catalog for the rest of their career and be relevant.

  16. Slicksasquatch Says:

What does it take to start a revolution?

  17. [Not Tom] Says:

I mean they cannot rely solely on the back catalog – obviously the back catalog is heavy in importance – but if they are to enjoy playing together they need to be creating music together – not just playing the same old songs they wrote 30 years ago.

  18. voopa Says:

Thought I had a hold when I checked my balance at an ATM last night…turned out it was just the latest check to the lawyer clearing. Argh!

  19. [Not Tom] Says:

@ slick – this century I think it takes living in a country in the mid-east.

  20. Jtran Says:

Anyone ever been to the Joshua Tree music festival? Seems like a pretty interesting, eclectic line up (though I haven’t heard of any of the artists)

wish i could have seen Dr.John play a show with The Meters back when Destively Bonnaroo was released. Especially if it was a club in New Orleans. would have been a lot of fun.

@Selecta – my understanding on the 7/25 show, or first set, was that Trey asked someone form Green Crew to make a setlist, or pick some songs, something like that. could be nonsense, but i’ve heard that from multiple sources.

i got the last two Whipping Posts, Fishman’s version lacked in jamming, but he gave it his half-best. apologies were given.

  24. Slicksasquatch Says:

Did the founding fathers not say we need revolution every hundred years or so to prevent corruption? On another note I have been let down by the lack of new material since the joy / party time albums. Steam has potential, but what else. The band needs to spend a week together locked in a barn to make new music. Seems like the creative juices are being used up on side projects. I mean Suzy Greenberg is only gonna get you so far. How about a tune of of one of Gordon’s albums if you don’t wanna come uP w some new goods.

  25. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    Denver flights just dropped $50.

    woo hoo!
