TTFF: The Grab Bag Continues…

7.4.2010 (Wendy Rogell)

Stash” 8.15.1993, Louisville, KY

A profound improvisational escapade.

Mike’s Song” 11.15.95 II, Tampa, FL

This “Mike’s” is a case study in Fall ’95’s arena rock intensity; a ferocious jam that dissolves into beauty.

Simple” 7.10.98 II, Barcelona, ES

Along with a slew of sound issues, the final night of Europe ’98 also featured this sublime, near 25-minute jaunt out of “Simple.”

Reba” 12.1.96 II, Los Angeles, CA

Most people are familiar with the monstrous “Tweezer” that opened this set at Pauly Pavilion at UCLA. The “Reba” that came later in the set, however, is a hidden gem.

Bathtub Gin” 12.31.99 II, Big Cypress, FL

One of the Big Set’s lesser talked about jams is still absolutely magnificent.

Ghost” 11.15.98 I, Mufreesboro, TN

Delivered as the second song of a mid-week stop in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, this version is another that illustrated the omnipresence of “Ghost” during Fall ’98. Coming in all shapes and sizes, this rendition was anchored in uptempo rock before moving into outright groove, quite the way to get the party started in a bare-bones college gymnasium.

Ramble On > Slave” 8.13.98 II, Vernon Downs, NY

A classic pairing from the end of Vernon Downs’ first set. When Trey hits the “Ramble On” line in the “Slave” peak—chills every time.

Tweezer -> Makisupa -> Antelope” 11.30.95 II, Dayton, OH

Let’s finish the week with another thrilling Fall ’95 “Tweezer,” this one from Dayton’s Nutter Center, not to mention the entire three song combo.

    @Leo

got any good stories (and time to share) from that Europe 98 experience?

  2. stapes Says:

    I love this Slave.

    Happy Friday all!

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

dude, I’ve got TONS of stories from that experience. Unfortunately that was the only Phish show I caught that summer. I also saw WP at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Ben Harper at a 2000 year old amp in Rome, and Steve Winwood/Tito Puente/Arturo Sandoval in the piazza of the small town I lived in. Also met Fishman and talked to Mike for a sec.

  4. phoammhead Says:

  5. SillyWilly Says:

one of those lifer summers, Leo

    I love thinking about that:

not only have you traversed the United States to get to shows, but you traversed Europe as well

instead of how many states did you pass through, how many countries?

  6. Leo Weaver Says:

Just pulled two Lakewood section 205, just behind and to the left of soundboard.

  7. Guyute711 Says:

  8. Guyute711 Says:

  11. Leo Weaver Says:

I was one of those summers SW. That’s where my wife and I developed relations and made beverages. Art program based study abroad in a very small Italian hill town…simply incredible. Saw many villas of Italy’s past elite including Villa Medici above Florence.

We took an overnight train from Milan through France, Monaco, and into Spain for the Barcelona show…the train hugged the coast, literally straight down into the water from my window for portions of the ride. It was a dirty uncomfortable ride, but an experience that’s part of me now.

I’ll tell you more in AC.

  12. SillyWilly Says:

    I can’t wait, Leo.

    that’ll be a great time.

  13. [Not Tom] Says:

nabbed 2 in sec 204 row RR dead center behind the sound board – probably near the mic stands but there aren’t many of those anymore.

    Whew!

  14. Leo Weaver Says:

@g$ and NTM…did you guys see that Rush is playing TWC Arena later this year?

  15. [Not Tom] Says:

No I didn’t, but I saw Rush play the Bi-Lo last fall … by myself 🙂 – well there were other people there but none I knew

  16. Leo Weaver Says:

    Ha, ya got me NTM!

Yes it will be a great time SW. Looks like one of my old crew that now lives in DC will be joining us for at least 2 nights.

  17. [Not Tom] Says:

@ Leo – have you gotten tix for Lakewood yet?

  18. [Not Tom] Says:

those sec 205 – that you?

  19. Leo Weaver Says:

    Yeah, sec 205 row EE

  20. Guyute711 Says:

I saw Rush will be there. Hopefully I don’t have to declare bankruptcy before then. Please someone tell me not to worry about money and live it up this summer.

  21. [Not Tom] Says:

looks like I’m about 13 rows behind and one section over – still, they are the covered section I believe and heads up – about like where were were in CLT two years ago. I’ll take that any day.

  22. [Not Tom] Says:

live it up this summer G$

  23. stapes Says:

    Woostah 97 Runaway JAM

Let’s hope Trza channels this beast this year in the same building. Love this jam. Never gets old. Full on exploration

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

Don’t worry about money and live up this summer!

  25. phoammhead Says:

i pulled 2 in sec 207 TT right at the on sale and threw those back . . . might as well be in the lawn versus those tix
