very pleasant to lie in bed on a May morning watching the storm

    hope everyone is doing well!

  4. Guyute711 Says:

Well someone is receiving actual storms. Had a dream last night that my house was hit by a tornado. I’m tough, we survived.

  5. MiA Says:

Send rain south. We need it!

  6. Grooves Says:

wish I could send the rain south, MiA

after a promising start to the spring (about a month early), we’ve settled into the mid 50s and rain

i like rain, but i’m ready for some sun.

  10. Fly Says:

    Mornin’ SW and all

I have another of these brutal all day interviews tomorrow, so I’m filled with anxiety

Anxiety has to be one of the most unpleasant and unnatural feelings in the spectrum of human emotion

Nothing like going in teaching a class in front of administrators and kids you don’t know when you haven’t been teaching for a couple of years and you have no idea where the kids are at

Especially when that class is after five straight hours of interviewing

And is something you really aren’t sure you want to do

And you have an unfinished dissertation that needs to get done in three months and isn’t getting done because of these interviews

Sorry, just super stressed and uncomfortable these days, much love to all this morning, hoping everyone has a peaceful day

  11. RoosterPizza Says:

That’s a lot fly. Not sure on your circumstances, but make sure you have enough time to work on your dissertation…you can’t rush good research. The jobs will be there, especially the ones you aren’t sure that you want. Good luck with everything.

  12. Dr Pronoia Says:

    Easy energy your way, Fly

Anxiety is just arousal plus fear or dread. Massage the story you’re telling yourself about that arousal and it can be experienced as excitement, or just communication from your nervous system that this is a big moment in your life

    Good luck btw!

  13. btb Says:

    tx for the jams miner

Didn’t sleep on the PDX Ghost and was rewarded with a multi-section exploratory jaunt. noice!

  14. marcoesq Says:

Thanks Miner, great post for this rainy Wednesday morning while I pack for Boston.

These fucking Devils, they just won’t go away

  15. marcoesq Says:

Jesus, I can only imagine what would happen if they brought My Left Toe back…explosions

  16. SillyWilly Says:

    good luck, man.

I suffer from anxiety and depression, but have found some things that have really helped lately.

If you’d like to talk more: falkwilt AT google’s mail

I agree that anxiety is one of the worst mental states. It’s like wearing sunglasses that filter all the best and brightest colors.

I think beating anxiety requires burning the candle from two ends: 1. controlling the anxiety in the present which is really hard sometimes 2. managing long term anxiety by making choices and establishing patterns that help you in the long run

but, in the moment, try and focus on dividing what makes you anxious into smaller, controllable units.

divide the interview into 5 1 hr blocks “I’m going to do my best for this first hour and I’ll deal with the second hour when it comes.”

and I don’t know if this will help or not, but your job and your career are external to you. Human beings are literally not made to abide by the schedules and pressures put upon us by the system we live in.

Your anxiety surrounding this is very natural. Your unconsicous knows that this shit is wack.

You are you. You are not the interview or the job or the dissertation. And, you’re not out of line, the system is.

  17. marcoesq Says:

    I love Phish

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    I love Phish

    great t-shirt idea

  19. MiA Says:

Anxiety is just a desire for things to go well, or a fear that they won’t. But there is almost always potential in anxiety. For good and bad.

Dread is knowing things are going bad. Don’t let anxiety open the door to dread or convince you otherwise.

As Dr. P said, I bet everyone who cares to perform well (or wants to) feels anxiety. Harness that anxiety, and realize that it’s also the same reaction system that pumps adrenaline in your body so you can perform better, and see if you can get your head out of the way.

  20. MiA Says:

Make it happen Fly. You will Jedi your way through this with ease.

  21. marcoesq Says:

You all familiar with Phish Loops on FB? Dude puts some pretty abstract jamz together on there, good shit.

  22. Fly Says:

Rooster, Dr. P, and SW, thank you very much for your helpful words.

SW, I will compose an electronic mail and send it as a pulse of light through an optic cable to SillyWilly, c/o Google.

  23. Fly Says:

And Mike, too. Thank you guys.

  24. marcoesq Says:

This music today is simply amazing. Loading up iPod for flight into Logan later.

Sad thing is, there’s someone out there right now listening, thinking to themselves, “It’s a good thing they don’t play this shit anymore!”

  25. Robear Says:

Fly, u r suave and debonairre. Those folks won’t know what hit them. Like the first time Phish played Nebraska.

    /You Can Feel Good!
