TTFW: Late ’90s Grab Bag

12.28.11 - MSG (Graham Lucas)

Runaway Jim” 7.31.97 II, Mountain View, CA

Jammed out “Jims” where have you gone?

Tweezer” 8.1.98 II, East Troy, WI

Can never get enough of the Alpine “Tweeze”…

Ghost” 7.3.97 II, Nuremburg, GR

Euro ’97 “Ghosts” were slow, funky and exploratory, as Phish honed their new jam vehicle before coming stateside.

Bathtub Gin” 10.1.99 I, Ames, IA

A first set smoker from the heartland in ’99. We came out to a smashed window and many things stolen from our car before the all-night drive to Minneapolis. Fuckin’ wooks…

Reba” 8.14.96 I, Hershey, PA

A stunning version from a Summer ’96.

Stash” 9.9.99 I, Vancouver, BC

A psychedelic trek from Fall ’99’s first set.

2001” 7.7.99 II, Charlotte, NC

One of ’99’s top versions.

Mike’s Song” 12.2.97 II, Philadelphia, PA

This version needs no introduction—funk warfare.

Piper > Guy Forget” 10.1.00 II, Phoenix, AZ

The first bust-out of “Guy Forget” after being a piece of soundcheck lore for years.

Weekapaug Groove” 4.3.98 I, Uniondale, NY

My favorite “Weekapaug” to date.

Just found out via my first ever eye exam that staring at a computer for work for 10+ hours a day over the last 20 years has taken me from zero to bifocals at age 43.

Vanity Vanity, all is Vanity. And vanity is fucking expensive, yo.

    Off to research frames.

  6. plord Says:

On the plus side, no sign of glaucoma, which my mom has.

  7. b-rock Says:

Although i acknowledge bifocals may suck, I’m bugging on “first ever eye exam”… Legally blind since kindergarten here. Wanna trade?

  8. MiA Says:

Nope Marco, just the Ghost from above.

I think the eye thing is just turning 40, no more than the computer screen or profession. I have it too. Everyone my age does. iPhones being small as shit doesn’t help either.

I keep looking at my iPhone and think, who the fuck designed this tiny impossible to read thing? 16 year olds? You need retina displays? I mean, I’m gonna need new retinas after looking at this thing for too long.

    Onto TTFW Reba.

Has anyone tried to save the Charlotte 2001 to their drive? I can’t seem to get it to work? I hear that goes around this age too.

  9. MiA Says:

Wait, first ever eye exam?! That’s crazy.

  10. marcoesq Says:

    ah, right. good looks mia

  11. MiA Says:

I guess the Philly Mike’s is the same way too.

  12. plord Says:

First ever as an adult I guess, but yeah. Haven’t looked at the eye charts in decades, since my mom still had to drive me to the pediatrician.

Sorry b-rock, it sucked way harder for you no doubt. I’m just bitching about the inevitable slow decline.

  13. thedayman Says:

thanks for all the well wishes, much obliged bb.

sorry to hear b-rock, really puts things in perspective for me.

  14. MiA Says:

I should have been a pathologist.

  15. b-rock Says:

I wouldn’t wish it on others but at least I functional. Reality is there’s much worse things in the world. Like not having any fresh phish to chew on.

  16. voopa Says:

    “but at least I functional.”

You sound like me first thing in the morning.

  17. marcoesq Says:

    “but at least I functional”

Sounds like you might need better glasses.

  22. MiA Says:

Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.

  23. MiA Says:

    Too slow.

  24. Leo Weaver Says:

Long time blind as a bat’r here too. Glasses since 3rd grade. The ol’ peepers have stabilized over the past 10 years, but I’ve developed a case of astigmatism….thanks Ma! I need to have lasik done but not really willing to drop the several grand it takes for a good job.

@dayman, purps, and other recent grads…congrats! Welcome to the real world. Or put it off as long as possible.

    Today’s PSA…Promote Sustainability – install a rain barrel!

  25. Guyute711 Says:

Not willing to do Lasik until I see about ten more years of them done. Not real keen on being in the small percentage of people who’s eyes are fucked for good after having it done. My teeth are costing me a fortune right now anyway. WTF human upkeep is bullshit.
