TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

***

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

***

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

***

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/ph98-07-25d1t05.mp3]

***

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2-05-Track-05.mp3]

***

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

  1. RoosterPizza Says:

I just hit the sweet spot in the Gumbo from Noblesville. Very nice…

  2. jp Says:

love the intro on this post Miner

late 90s were ludicrous more often than not

going back and forth on getting all the summer .wavs like did in 2011

if i had more confidence in a consistent summer 98 like performance level, would be a no-brainer

fun to buy into tour beforehand tho

felt like i was on tour from may to sept last year and hearing the shows the next day, etc

connected in some way to it all, loved reading Miner’s reviews in conjunction with listening to the shows right after too

$350 either for or against the phishaddition with the pending decision

odds on jam v prance at this stage? practice rumors? ablum work? hope they are not just going through the motions, nostalgia time, one big jam per show if lucky, etc

time to continue to get back to the top of their game more of the time

thank you livephish for 7 bait – best yet!

  3. MiA Says:

Looking forward to summer ’98 this Friday. Great way to start a long weekend.

2-3 standout tracks almost every show.

  4. xpun Says:

wow friday already! this week was a flash of activity. so much stuff coming up on my plate, it should continue to do so until im on a field in AC.

98-99 were my busiest show years, so def enjoy these tracks and the sound the band was producing at the time.

  5. xpun Says:

@miner i challenge you to a weekend nuggets this last phishless weekend 😉

i second someones post from yesterday about a cover post highlighting some of the many new covers from summer 98

  6. xpun Says:

spent some time last night trying to figure out what trey is teasing from 1325-1558 in the lb7 gumbo

part of it sounds that “shake your body down to the ground” by michael jackson/jackson 5

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRdN-9zEj2w

any help wold be awesome as it drove me crazy for a good while

  7. Luther T. Justice Says:

Bummer. I didn’t get a Temple of Fire at the Summer ’98 shows I went to. Got fire but no temple.

  8. st8 of mind Says:

This Reba is sick! Was waiting for the FEFY afterwards but it doesn’t work. Thanks Miner.

  9. viola Says:

god bless america and god bless the bb

sincere gratitude to all the men and women who have given their lives for our freedom.

and mucho grassy ass to everyone who is now serving in the armed forces. THANKYOU

you are rich, big ups yourself

  10. viola Says:

happy memorial day weekend! hmmmm, summer 98 : ) ty mr.miner

  11. MiA Says:

Everything seemed lithe the eternal tease/jam all summer 98. Like a massive jigsaw puzzle. But each piece was beautiful in its own right.

  12. stapes Says:

“Everything seemed lithe the eternal tease/jam all summer 98. Like a massive jigsaw puzzle. But each piece was beautiful in its own right.”

^^^this. Lots of similar themes throughout the summer. Trey loved that Manteca-like riff in lots of jams.
I think I know the passage in this Gumbo you guys are talking about. Never was sure exactly what it was.
8/3/98 was one of those XLIIs I pretty much wore out. Great show top to bottom. Many memories.

Happy Friday BB! Have a great weekend. Ready to relax and enjoy it.

  13. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Mrs. Berzerker and and were in Austin for a wedding and missed that show.
That went on my resentment list. Furthermore we miracled friends of our with Dallas tickets as it was just not in the cards for us.

    Everything has a time and a place….

Second leg seems so far away and none of my east coast prospects are warming up to a visit in June.

    My problem right there.

  14. alf Says:

worcester: safe opener or statement opener?

anybody have a woosta 1 floor to trade for my night 2 floor?

  15. alf Says:

i’ll be off board but info is on tix exchange

thanks for the tunes miner, another heavy hitter list. between this, past TTF_s, and live bait, stoney better be careful with all these jams flyin around!

    have a good one kids

  16. Kaveh Says:

    Morning BBers!

I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone

^ Yes @Miner, please do that! What a great way to lead up to the tour opener.

  17. MiA Says:

Phish is the pied piper leading the fans across the nation. So jealous of those that did whole tours.

My favorite three words from Trey or Page on tour? “See you tomorrow.”

I don’t know about “Shake Your Body” tease or not. I like it.

But I definitely have that MJ dance move at :48 down pat.

    :thrust:

  18. vegas wolfmans Says:

Portland (fail) and Atlanta (meh) were the only U.S. shows I missed on this tour- and I’m a better man for it. Love hearing that place where the funk starts to meet the ambient in their sound. Brilliant.

PB-What was your part in that resentment? 8)

  19. MiA Says:

I’d pay extra money on my ticket for Page to do that Keytar dance at 1:50 also.

  20. MiA Says:

Jealous VW. Missed Portland too. Picked up Gorge, to Ventura. Woodlands to Deer Creek. 13 shows for summer. Not bad. Missed all of fall ’98. Boo.

  21. vegas wolfmans Says:

Those Gorge ’98 shows were fantastic. Peak level shit IMO.

  22. Robear Says:

Man, do I need to put the stereo back together this morning.

  23. MiA Says:

For the record, I always thought that tease was just a nod back to the opener “Rhinoceros” by Smashing Pumpkins.

  24. MiA Says:

    It isn’t.

  25. Robear Says:

Who wants to head over and move some Heavy Things? Trey?
