TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

***

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

***

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/ph98-07-25d1t05.mp3]

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2-05-Track-05.mp3]

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

Asleep at 8:30 last night. Bourbon and baby chasin in the hamptons had me wiped. Need to work on my stamina for tour

  2. robear Says:

I’m loving this opera browser for the iPhone. The refresh button is at the bottom of the page, works perfect for Mr. Miner site

  3. viola Says:

cincy 03 gin where trey catches the glowstick and then continues to toss it behind his back into a girls face in the front row!! great memories that silverchair97 has on vid. thanks silverchair97 for all the great work over the yrs.

i never heard of feb 03 as being anchored in sobriety? trey was touching his nose all of 03 and 04. so much banter during those two yrs as well.

cincy 03 will live on as one of the best back to back shows in the post 1.0 eras

  4. stitchstash Says:

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend!

Congratulations Brandon!!! Live while you’re young. Go on tour!

  5. kayatosh Says:

no kids, no wife and time on my hands. can we start phish tour tonight in philly?

gonna go spin the 6.28.2000 Gin per Palmer’s rec.

  6. stitchstash Says:

Nice Kaya! I gave my husband the day off too. It’s so important to have some personal time.

  7. robear Says:

Cincy Split sounds a bit like ‘Head Hunters’ by HH, around 11 min area

  8. kayatosh Says:

Good to see you posting here, stich. Day off for the husband — wow. you are a gracious wife.

re. the fabled Cincy Split. what date are we talking about? need to seek it out.

  9. kayatosh Says:

6.28.2000 gin is $$, but the mike’s from that show is $$$ and then bam, complete stop. albuquerque

  10. stitchstash Says:

He deserves it. His birthday was on Friday. After two days of partying like a rockstar, I figured he could use a day with us out of the house to sleep it off.

  11. Xpun Says:

Wow stich. 2 days of partying AND a day of rest. You are going to start making some of us around here pretty jealous.

  12. kayatosh Says:

stich: so you’ve effectively given him 3 days off. wife of the yr. candidate.

still looking for any 2000 highlight suggestions. may check out the 9.27 piper. many great sources now in FLAC on bt.etree.org

They killed mike’s back in 2000. 6.28 works well and 7.1 is $$$ as well.

  13. robear Says:

    9/18/00 set 2

  14. tela'smuff Says:

viola – i witnessed that whole deal with Trey and glowstick. so great. Tube, Gin was about as good as it gets in 2.0, amazing shit. of course, he had to ruin it with Friday….

didn’t know there was a vid on this. i’ll check that. thanks

  15. kayatosh Says:

thanks robear. had that whole show on cd. recently just cherry picked the mcgrupp. you’re right though the whole set is worth the d/l effort

  16. stitchstash Says:

Doesn’t everyone take 3 days off for their birthday??

He spoils me much more than I ever get a chance to spoil him! It’s far from even in my eyes.

I forgot to charge my phone before I left so I’ll catch up with you guys another day. Love ya kids! Have a good one!

  17. MiA Says:

Opera browser is the best Robear. Will trade excellent Texas salsa and Mrsmia Massages for Robear treats.

Still haven’t figured out my August but Trinity River sounds like a good time.

  18. MiA Says:

June ’00 is top notch phish.

  19. MiA Says:

Loggins and Messina – Vahevala, “On Stage” 21:00 of greatness.

  21. xpun Says:

@kaya – i second MIAs june req. been hitting up a lot of the japan shows this afternoon. most impressed so far by 6-9-00 YEM. the way YEMs should be, nice long focused groovy jam, 25min of the goody. even the voacl jam which usually doesn’t do it for me is relaxed and mellow.

otherwise the second set mpp from that fall (not sure of the date w/o looking) was an old fav of mine. can’t remember the sequence but free, theme, dog log, mango is the meat of the set with nice drawn out jams and smooth –>s

for some reason i skipped that show and always regretted that move. they used to always play mango if i changed my mind and didn’t hit a show at the last second.

  22. kayatosh Says:

xpun: you speak of 9.17.2000 theme>dog log>mango>jam indeed it is $$$.

will check out 6.9 YEM along w/ 6.9 tweez.

after consulting miner’s book and my ole phish companion (circa 2000), I now have a bunch of additional 2000 highlights cued up for for a lazy afternoon of listening and phils. will report back

  23. angryjoggerz Says:

I’m making a best of Phish 3.0 comp for my buddy in South Africa and I just edited the Watkins Glenn soundcheck down to the last 21ish minutes and am listening on headphones. Wow. When you put all the hot Phish 3.0 together in one playlist, it really adds up. Lots of great, out there, weird, beautiful moments in there. Looking forward to summer.

  24. MiA Says:

Well, Mrsmia just found 1/8th of Sativa. Diesel smelling. Don’t remember her stashing it, but I love a good stash i’ve forgotten about.

  25. angryjoggerz Says:

this playlist also shows me that last summer was fucking money. Lots of really great sounding stuff. Dig the psychedelic swagger. Lots of storage vibes.
