TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

***

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

***

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/ph98-07-25d1t05.mp3]

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/2-05-Track-05.mp3]

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Drowned.mp3,http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Makisupa.mp3]

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

Nice AJ. I called that “2nd Jam’ and edited it in iTunes. One of my favorite jams.

  2. Mr. Palmer Says:

Nice. Just found out one of good friends, who I’ve been seeing shows with since ’93 has decided to fly over ( he lives in Switzerland) and go to AC.

  3. xpun Says:

i very vividly remember the superball soundcheck. poolside with kids, bunny in my ears, knowing that i was leaving in <8hrs for an overnighter to the camp grounds. that jam got me sooo pumped for the weekend.

i too have that edited down on the pod, goes well with the bethel waves

@palmer – thats awesome, as if any of us needed more reason to be looking forward to AC

  4. xpun Says:

just noticed one of my coworkers has an MS charity bike ride sponser sheet in the lounge. her bike team – The Grateful Tread. will have to investigate that one further next time i see her.

  5. RoosterPizza Says:

Yeah guys, things are good here. The baby is due June 14, but it seemed like she could pop out at any point. False labor contractions keep happening.

I got completely dusted drinking Jack Daniels last night. Sorry, I got a little loose with the posting…haha. I am 13 hours ahead of EST. it is 5:18am on Monday.

Hood finally got me on the show of life. He always talked about having his daughter and listening to that. I was walking through a little valley to the ocean yesterday, and the show of life, out of nowhere, hit me really hard. Powerful song in the right moment. All this time, I thought hood was just emo…

  6. Gavinsdad Says:

Thank u Kevin Shapiro. Just put my feet up after 5 hrs of yard work. Gatorade now…dark n stormys later. Cleaned off our deck and general backyard tidy up. Listened to live bait 7 the entire time (and earlier on a haggard run/jog mess) and these picks are sick. Great gumbo…wow Reba….that tweez needs listening under “lab settings” later.

Wasnt faded last nite when I posted. If we all think our work is done just having met new friends via the BB we are misguided. Hopefully pockets of BB peeps in venues across the land will help people around then elevate, on all levels. 🙂

    ^my hope at least.

  7. Gavinsdad Says:

    ^at shows this Summer. Duh.

  8. kayatosh Says:

the work of sowing seeds is never done. Gdad, you were instrumental in my re-arrival on the scene. I am forever indebted. you’re right that such kindness needs to be passed along and along.

  9. kayatosh Says:

Gdad is the johnny appleseed of good vibes.

I like your vision, ole timer.

  10. kayatosh Says:

gdad – your attitude makes me happy i found this place, such a great place to talk about random shit, share tunes in tt, etc look forward to meeting some of you this summer

the brad sands announcement from the lemonwheel about the big storm approaching just came up on random.

did it rain at the lemonwheel? i have zero memory of that. i remember it rained first night of went cause our tent flooded a bit, but no recollection of any at wheel.

  12. xpun Says:

really in need of bumping up the mrs credit score by 12 pts ASAFP.

if anyone on the bb has a good understanding of credit scores and fico i’d love to pick your brain on how best to go about this.

please email at xpun25 – yahoo

  13. Lycanthropist Says:

    @kaya

you are missing antelope and tweezer from 6/24 on that 2000 list.

    big misses there.

  14. kayatosh Says:

nice call, lycan. those are among phish’s 2000 long form jams. i don’t mind the long form as long as it is engaging throughout.

the list above was culled from what has recently been posted on bt.etree.org in FLAC. i have already grabbed 6.24 tweezer (but not antelope) and 6.23 DWD in FLAC, hence not on list.

of what i have listened to so far, standouts include:
    6.13 antelope>contact>sand
    6.22 2001>sand
    6.28 mike’s, albuquerque
    7.1 mike’s>swept away>steep>H2>Week>Nellie cane
    7.3 gin, sand
7.4 saw it again>magilla>twist (mid twist now)
    9.17 Theme>dog log>mango>jam
9.18 mcgrupp (haven’t spun the rest of set II yet)
    9.20 It’s ice

have not yet spun 7.10 through 9.15, and 9.27

  15. kayatosh Says:

    add 6.23 makisupa

    and all of 6.14.2000

  16. xpun Says:

    @kaya – essentials ’00 are 5-22 ghos and 6-29 drowned->RnR, well known classics you’ve probably heard a hundred times

  17. kayatosh Says:

yes, xpun. I am already an owner of the 5.22 ghost. 6.29 I attended and loved at the time, and listened to on CD thereafter. probably need to include some 6.29 in the FLAC playlist. thanks for the reminder.

I’m a 3 media phan. started w/ tapes (XLII) back in the day, then burning shns to CD in the early 2000’s, now FLAC and FLAC players.

  18. acleo Says:

Hey BBers. I’m looking forward to having those tix in hand on Tuesday. Worcester is my only leg 1 stop for now. Sounds like a lot of you are going to make the opener. The vibes leading up to this tour are growing and I think this is the coolest place on the web to prepare for one crazy summer.

  19. kayatosh Says:

some of the CDs I burned from shn are now no longer listenable. I burned at the highest quality burn rate etc etc. but I think after 10 yrs. some discs start to sound like shite.

  20. kayatosh Says:

right on, acleo. crazy avatar. likey

  21. xpun Says:

ive never made the switch to FLAC or lossless. listen through macbook speakers or the ipod so figure i can only get so much out of them. am i missing out, or does my setup limit me to the point not to bother? if i were to give it a go, is there an easy way to get them into itunes?

  22. phlorida phan Says:

Only 10 more freakin days. Over and out.

  23. STEWIE Says:

  24. ThePigSong Says:

Spent last night camping and all day today ‘yakin the tiny Broad River NE of Athens. Perfect weather for such activities. Didn’t drink my beer on the river so I think I’ll start in on it now.

    Started with this:
    http://phishthoughts.com/2009/04/01/my-go-to-jam/

  25. kayatosh Says:

I’m not an itunes guy, xpun. I only d/l FLAC and play them through winamp or portable FLAC player (iaudio), so I’m not of much help when it comes to comparisons btw. lossless and lossy and how it would sound on an macbook.

I like to blast the phish (like this steady flowin 7.11.00 drowned) through the meager bose surround sound home stereo system. the iaudio FLAC player hooks up to it via RCA cables.
