TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

Just realized, minus Barcelona, I was at each of Miner’s picks for TTFF.

I wish I was in Barcelona too.

Lamb Burger was awesome. Had Bleu cheese in it. And some mint. Awesome. May never go back to beef.

Two awesomes in one paragraph? You better believe that’s a paddling. Stealing the school canoe…

  4. MiA Says:

Kinda Rooster’d right now. Time to crank up the Albany YEM for those on the neighboring block that haven’t heard this yet.

Kaya- Two Dollar signs for 6/28/00 Gin? I would argue the elusive four dollar sign treatment might be in order for that one. Still, the best thing from those PNC shows was the drop from Drowned into RnR from the following night. They were not afraid to blow shit up in the first set in 2000. Not afraid at all.

  6. xpun Says:

    Hahaha. Rooster’d

    As well am I

Been taking in Halloween 95. Realized I’d never heard.

The lady is away. I usually get drunk and blast dire straits ‘so far away’ a few times

  7. xpun Says:

    I never looked– was drowned->RnR 1st!!!??!!?

  8. vegas wolfmans Says:

Yeah brah. That filthy Gin from the night before was a first-setter also. Those shows were the business.

  9. xpun Says:

Wow. Fuckers were on fire. I always figured that was the meat of the 2nd. Nice rocking drowned, sweet breakdown and an all time segue there.

Listened to a lot of Japan at work today. It’s insane to think of what they are capable of at that point.

Sick things, Space Ghost, sick things. The pattern was not full.

By the time they hit the last peak in that MJ 2001 I felt better than I’d ever thought a combination of drugs and music could ever make me feel.

“They were not afraid to blow shit up in the first set in 2000. Not afraid at all.”

^^^this. And to that happening this summer!

First sets that made you want to sit down. No stand up. No sit down. I don’t know. Both. Had to walk a set off. Standing in line for toilets, and everyone is buzzing’ about the Gin.

Love those memories. Nothing particular but that “We just got a stellar first set!” feeling.

  13. xpun Says:

Killer 1st put a buzz in the place. Cant wait for #2. Those 15 minutes seem more like 40 😉

  14. vegas wolfmans Says:

Good times, MiA. Keep Austin weird.

    wolfman out

  15. xpun Says:

I feel like I’m 18 again with the excitement I have for this summer. Already checked – nye run will match up perfect w work and kids – I’m hitting whole run. First time in 15 years.

  16. xpun Says:

    Phish + horns = $$$$

Even Julius will rock Miner’s socks!

  17. RoosterPizza Says:

The rooster might have to take a night off from getting roostered. I bought a bottle of Jack Daniels two days ago, and it is gonezo.

Just took the mother in law out for her birthday lunch, and I had squid that was so fresh that the suction cups were sucking to the plate, my chopsticks, tongue, roof of my mouth, and anything else it could latch to. Can’t argue with the freshness. Speaking of things you can’t argue with, the Gorge Antelope from 7/16/98 puts me in a nice spot. You like my infomercial-like seg there? Sexy, eh?

  18. lumpyhead Says:

Been gettin rooster’d hardcore this weekend…

  19. RoosterPizza Says:

That’s what we like to hear lumpy!

  20. garretc Says:

You’d hafta be a fool to not like the 12/30 Piper

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    That applies to both, garret.

  22. angryjoggerz Says:

Got a beach day ahead, one of the huge benefits of living one block from the lake. My two nieces are coming over and then we are shlooping over. Sunny and 90 here now, hottest Memorial day in recorded history. This summer is gonna be cookin’.

Still buzzing from my 3.0 playlist. When you put all of these big moments together it is impressive as hell. I am particularly impressed by the pulled-back, full band tightness that has happened a few times (Waves soundcheck, last 2o minutes of SBIX soundcheck, DTE Disease, etc.)

  23. Gavinsdad Says:

Always love when we circle back around to either 99 or 00 PNCs. I was mostly a local show catcher and those shows were local at the time. Completely sober at that point and the music was crashing down on our heads in the lower pav like waterfalls.

I can never be mistaken for a Phish Scholar so to me, I always thought they were capable of madness in the first set and its probably because of shows like those PNCs. That Gin is astoundingly good….just when u think triz doesnt have any more notes….boom!…another peak.

Side note: friend sent me a check for some JB tics im sending him. The note on the memo line said “triscuit” 😉

  24. MiA Says:

Spent the morning with the Textbook again. I’m reading it straight through. On page 65. Love the descriptions of the band, the phans and the environment. The frustration of tickets. Everything. Miner nailed it.

Think I gotta go listen to Hampton I, just so I can hear the roar of Fluffhead.

  25. stapes Says:

I love not being at work at getting paid for it.

What’s up BB? Hope everyone had a great weekend.
