TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

my personal favorite show of summer 98 is 7.28.98 sandstone

i argue that this whole show, top to bottom is their best effort of summer98. it just never lets up and is overflowing with gordux goodness. the first set just never stops, and the slow down, breather segment of its ice legnthwise is IT
my favorite funky bitch ta boot…. what a way to close out a 5 star 1st set

the jamming in sandstone is great cause is transcends the whole show. i’m surprised miner overlooked this show?? did you miss this one. the contact is personalized as well with trey fumbling dedication! great rendition none the less.

  2. viola Says:

sandstone 98 and philly 12.2.97 are my top request for sbd leakage.

  3. Luther T. Justice Says:

My friend & I had picked up some strippers at club the night before the Riverport show and ended up taking them to their first Phish show. My memory of that show is definitely Gin & Ho’s. Not boats & ho’s. Gin & Ho’s.

  4. marcoesq Says:

Morning all. Itching to get out here for the weekend!

    Thanks for these drops, Minah1

  5. Kaveh Says:

Cause I’m like this every once and awhile:

“Tube” 8.16.98 II, Quincy, WA should be:

    “Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Morning. So stupid to be at work today – I have the option to work from home and it will be a half day, but I only came in because I have my horrible workout after work. Lunges day. Not woot.

  7. SillyWilly Says:

    Good morning, kids

    and happy friday!

thanks for the jamz Mr. Miner

Getting geared up for the summer. Thinking about taking a quick week trip up to the Porcupine Mtns in the UP next week with the SLF

then coming back and gathering myself for AC

    summer is here.

  8. SillyWilly Says:

    Nice, AJ

lunges are key. not really a mirror lift, but i’m sure your wife appreciates it nonetheless.

lunges will get those glutes and quads in shape to groove this summer

    (sorry for the meathead post)

  9. Luther T. Justice Says:

Wish we had shows this weekend like last year. Even not being at Bethel, it made my holiday weekend to have IT happening.

  10. marcoesq Says:

Alpine 7.8.00 could be a 3.0 show. Easily.

    And Alpine 8.1.98

  11. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    The whole part V-dub.

Only hit the AZ show of Summer 98. I liked it. I slung Otter Pops in the lot.

Otter Pops, Otter Pops where have you gone? Family anthem here in the Berzerker home.

  12. Kaveh Says:

Can’t get the FEFY to play? Is anyone else having this issue too? (And yes, I’ve refreshed the page.)

  13. Robear Says:

In case you thought it was safe and boring in ole Humboldt

  14. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Keep pushing! Build the habit now and soon enough it will be second nature and then you can pay it forward to someone else who needs a nudge.

Nothing beats getting checked out by some hot ladies at the store.

Lunges and legwork in general help prime the metabolism and boost natural test levels… You’ll be able to jump higher than others during Tweeprise. That’s the right dance move there, right?

  15. Guyute711 Says:

Looks like a nice upstanding citizen to me Robear.

  16. rivertrance Says:

jaded peeps like me think that’s all that goes on in Humboldt stoney

still can’t believe that 95 tweezer from live bait. was there but never heard it on tape. nothing wrong with these 98 picks but by spinning em just made me want to throw on that tweezer.

    shit is just dirty.

  17. Luther T. Justice Says:

I wonder why meth users prefer spider web tattoos so much?

  18. dorn76 Says:

Late to the party…looks like yesterday was a great day for baby news!

Just about the time Tela’s was posting his good news, my oldest friend called to say he and his wife are finally expecting after 3 years of trying. Did the IVF thing. Big sigh of relief.

Daughters are awesome. Someone to take care of us when we’re old.

Off to VT for the weekend tomorrow. Will pack Jamz.

  19. stapes Says:

    20 squats
    20 lunges
    20 jumping lunges
    20 jumping squats
4 sets 1 min rest between
    You’ll be burning.

    Sorry for another meathead post.

  20. Guyute711 Says:

I want to try to have a baby for 3 years. Ok, no I don’t but I’d like to pretend I was trying.

  21. MiA Says:

I thought meth and spiders went together. Why they pick at themselves so much.

God that’s an ugly drug. Unless you’re Walter White.

  22. Luther T. Justice Says:

Walter White brings pride & quality to meth making. His high standards are admirable.

  23. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Pretty sure that manteca-like riff you are referring to is trey doing the riff from “the name is slick”

I might have a worcester one floor to trade for a worcester two floor. Give me the weekend to check…

  24. vegas wolfmans Says:

marcoesq- Does 3.0 phish have the skills to pull off something as nasty and patient as tweez>fluff from 8/1/98?

  25. stapes Says:

T3- gonna have to spin some Siket Disc tonight
