TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

The waiting is the hardest part. Working today….cool part is this will be a moving holiday for 6/7!!!!

  7. acleo Says:

Hard to believe it’s been 6 months…no live Phish!

@Aj – i agree and feel what you you’re talking about. i did the same back in Feb or so, making a 3.0 playlist, and there is a lot there to be proud of. it’s pretty invigorating when you sit down a spin the highlights.

  9. acleo Says:

Playing all the Live bait 1-7 this week at work. The live phish app jamz!!!!

  10. xpun Says:

Off to the pool. I’m super pale so I think I’m burning at just the thought of it. I remember this weekend last year taking in the bethel shows. Highlights galore in that stand.

Glad they held back that waves at first. Would have been too much to handle out of the gate.

3.0 has tons of great music. Flow, horsing and 2nd set filler have been the the problems. Not quality jams.

Hard to believe we are approaching single digits.

  11. acleo Says:

SPF xpun SPF. I think a Show of Life set one closer would be perfectly placed on 6/7.

  12. acleo Says:

    “Find our selves a beer”

outdoor chores done. time to resume the 2000 journey

finishing up 9.14 drowned. another 30 min. opus containing many $$$ jam sections — sounds like the musical equivalent of a steady rain early in the jam. but some sections meander. i had a similar reaction to 6.9 tweezer. in 3.0 many of these jams would have been horsed.

got 6.9 YEM on tap as well as 9.15 piper tube, 9.18 boogie on twist mcgrupp halley’s, 9.22 tube reba ghost>wedge, and 9.27 piper gumbo ghost

re. 6.28 gin. gave it two $’s b/c i favor the 7.3.00 gin. VegasWlfmn’s is probably correct that 6.28 deserves three $’s. Blame it on being rooster’d

  14. Lumpyhead Says:

    18 days til I see phish…

  15. acleo Says:

Time 2 spin bait #2. To finish off this work day. Thanks to all the soldiers of freedom.

  16. kayatosh Says:

hershey tube — so meaty. $$$

  17. stapes Says:

This LB is just not getting old. At all. After about 15 spins.
    Top-notch improv.

  18. tela'smuff Says:

@stapes – come on over and help me plant a tree and ignore a douche

  19. MiA Says:

    It’s 89° here and feels like 110°.

    This doesn’t bode well.

  20. ThePigSong Says:

Grillin’ wings, drinking beer and spinning 6.14.00. I always have Monday off, but making this one a little extra special.

  21. Gavinsdad Says:

Note to self: oil on drumsticks doesn’t let em crisp up. I always oil my steaks so I got carried away. Im also Melting out here on my deck…guzzling water and listening to LB7 again…this gumbo is silly groovy.

Just saw an Internet/wifi ready bluray for 129. A sharp (I have a sharp aquos/Quattron tv)….anyone wanna rec a better quality bluray player?

  22. Gavinsdad Says:

Ps….100% “shake your body” teases in this LB7 Gumbo

  23. MiA Says:

Saw a Sony for $80, with apps, but no wifi at Costco. With Wifi for $130 seems like a good price.

  24. ThePigSong Says:

As much as I wish the Phish would go on another Japan or Euro tour, I just don’t think it’s in the cards. After listening to a lot of these club shows/highlights lately, it really doesn’t sound like the same band we have in 3.0.

The band was still young during these tours. They were sharp, zany and ready to experiment. Not to mention they were all still in their 30s. Hope I’m wrong though. I’d be all over one of these tours, fingers crossed for Japan especially. I’m always looking for reasons to cross the pacific in a lie-flat.

  25. Gavinsdad Says:

    Thx MIA

Side note: new batman movie villain, BANE, looks positively sinister.
