TTFF: Summer ’98

Summer '98 Promo Poster

Phish crushed so hard in the summer of ’98, that I could fill an entire week of playlists with highlights from this tour alone. Between their fortnight in Europe and month in America, the band churned out amazing jams at a ludicrous pace, while remaining on point for the entire season. Here are a handful of jams from what has to be considered the greatest summer tour of the late-90’s.

Curtain > Free” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

The laid back funk of Summer ’98.

Tweezer” 7.9.98 I, Barcelona, ES

In a small and sweltering club, Phish dropped these filthy grooves.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

Quintessential summer Phish with an uncharacteristic rhythmic take by Trey.

Ghost > Lifeboy” 8.2.98 II, Noblesville, IN

One of countless standout “Ghosts” of Summer ’98—the peak tour for the song.

Wolfman’s -> 2001” 7.24.98 II, Houston, TX

One of the lesser known highlights from this summer, and a soundboard, taboot.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

The Riverport “Gin” needs no introduction; my favorite version ever played.

Ya Mar” 7.25.98 I, Austin, TX

One of the most exploratory “Ya Mars” in history—a jam that is so cohesive that it sounds composed.

Tube” 7.16.98 II, Quincy, WA

A personal favorite featuring the open-air, chunky grooves of the Gorge.

Drowned -> Makisupa” 7.20.98 II, Ventura, CA

A dark horse combo from the begininning of Ventura’s second set that features a silky-smooth segue.

YEM” 7.26.98 II, Dallas, TX

A mid-second set explosion of swanky summer grooves in which Gordeaux thumps prominent “The Way I Feel” bass lines—a late-90’s trend that started a week earlier in Shoreline’s standout version.

I agree with ya @Stapes. Loops work. The Dicks Tweezer was sorta anchored with them.

How bout the Sweet Virigina from Dicks? Loved it. Its one of my fav Fishman vocals.

@aj – look to chucktown ’10 first set. Chock full of what u seek. Also, knoxville 09 had some nugs. Bethel Bold as Love was above average. Of course I think its consensus that the SBIX Mound is best evr.

I second the JB Numberline, a top shelf version fo sure

spinning GD 9.15.85 Chula Vista (etree seed today)

yup, the Dead prove that the Stones’ Satisfaction is indeed a tough song to pull off live (in his autobio, Keef said it was a hard one for the Stones to play well in the early years)

tho I love the way the GD bring out the swing/groove in that tune

heard the Other Ones play Satisfaction on July 4th at Six Flags, Agawam MA (what a clusterfuck traffic jam gettin in) and it was a revelation to me that day

  7. acleo Says:

11/22/94 Stones Satisfaction was the best. I even got to see a Priest dance to it. If that isn’t ironic….

  8. angryjoggerz Says:

Im trying to just do one version per tune (though DWD and Waves get 2). Is the JB Numberline better than the Blossom?

  9. acleo Says:

It’s official. Single digits till 2012 Phish!

  10. mr.palmer Says:

    Mr p you’re in west hampton? – dr.p

Yup. Got here today. Solo with 3 kids. I’m not very smart. My parents are here to help. I’m exhausted from chasing them around pool, etc.

We should try and coordinate a get together this summer. JoeMeg is right down the block also. I’m think JB party bus? Just a thought.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Bedtime for kiddos. Peace.

Numberline. Blossom, JB, Bethel are all great versions. Can’t go wrong. There is also a Spac ’09 numberline that goes way out.

  11. Plord Says:

Weekend was pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. Invasive plants removed, canoe thoroughly paddled, trampoline tramped, and swings swung. Bass caught: 13. Fucks given: 0

And in the evenings, basement totally cleaned out in prep for the next spasm of renovation that starts tomorrow. North and South outside walls getting new siding and new windows, more drainage and insulation (underground) around the whole foundation to help out the geothermal system, and refinishing the basement to make a media room. Not a man-cave; more a kids gaming, theater, and crafts room. Big space for sloppy painting, maybe a pottery wheel. And my workbench hidden somewhere in a corner so I can solder in peace 🙂

I gave one last forlorn look at the bank balance this morning, ready to watch it evaporate as the house continues to come together.

I’m traveling this week for work, another weekend, then boom, Woosta.

  12. DavidSilver Says:

Good job plord. Caught one bass today and one bass caught me. Had to go to the ER to get a fuckin treble outta my thumb. I’ll take memorable over forgettable any day though. Can’t imagine the pain some of these vets went through in war if a little hook brought me that much pain. Happy Memorial Day troops.

  13. tela'smuff Says:

oh snap. didn’t realize we had bass fisherman on the board. got into some good ones last week. 6 caught including a 5 lb which is good for CO.

  14. DavidSilver Says:

Fish Thoughts. Worst part about it was it was a brand new lure that I only used once. Bass are feisty this time of year. 5 lbs is a pretty damn big bass!

  15. MiA Says:

AW does not fish for bass. Hmmm…

  16. DavidSilver Says:

No. But I heard he does have a scale rendition of phish’s aquarium stage set up at his crib and he likes to play air guitar with his Trey action figure while listening to jams. Not that he’d admit it.

  17. joe Says:

now I’m confused. I thought I knew who David Silver was…

anyway, t-minus 10 days. Joe’s taxi service with stops at Logan and the Metro Boston area has room for 1 or 2 depending on luggage situation. Departing Thursday early afternoon for Worcester. One bb’er already booked. drop a line at joeblackboard at yahoo if you need. No fee service, just tell a story or two on the ride as my car only has boring, corporate terrestrial radio and a spotty cd player.

  18. Elementset Says:

19min mark of LB7 jim, yes sir

  19. Dr Pronoia Says:

Definitely Mr P, an east end party bus or at least a car pool sounds great for JB2

I’m taking Mrs Pronoia to 7/3

I am so exhausted by this weekend. Little fucker is fast now, and in my stupidity I brought a book out with me, thinking I’d get to sit for more than 30 seconds

Speaking of FishThoughts, I’d love to go out on a boat some weekend out there. I’ve never been. Who’s the fishing guide out there on the board again?

  20. mr.palmer Says:

    Spasm waiter is the guide.

Your in east hampton, right? That’s a good 1hr + east of us, I think. My old man has caught the fishing bug in retirement. Got himself a nice boat. Stepped up the Tuna and Shark last summer, along with stripers. He’d love the company.

  21. sumodie Says:

Is the JB Numberline better than the Blossom?

Those jams are completely different from one another, not the kind I’d compare

However, Blossom’s is much more of bizarro where’d that come from kinda jam (courtesy of Page I think). I had high hopes that we were gonna hear more of that style jam in ’10, but it didn’t happen

  22. RoosterPizza Says:

Water might be breaking. UPdates to follow…

  23. xpun Says:

here you go rooster, you’ll remember these moments forever!! best of luck to everyone.

  24. ThePigSong Says:

Walked over to the Atlanta Jazz Fest a few hours ago with my dog. A man can have some great experiences with live jazz, decent beer and his dog(g).

  25. ThePigSong Says:

Good luck Rooster! I left my pregnant half at home with the wuss dog. By now she’s on about hour 1,000 of the first 48 on Netflix.
