CrowdsEye: A New Way to Share Memories

(Photo: Shelly Siegel)

Phish tour is filled with adventure and madness of all shapes and sizes. Think of all the crazy things that you’ve seen and experienced during your show-going adventures, and now imagine if you could actually see and read about some of these twisted moments that others have experienced as well? This is the crux of CrowdsEye, a new website that hosts digital scavenger hunts of live music events. Having already conducted unoffical competitions for SXSW’s Screenburn, Coachella, and Lightning in a Bottle, Crowdseye will be an official sponsor of Sonic Bloom, Denver Comic Con, and Electric Forest. And on Wednesday, the Los Angeles based company will launch The Phish Tour Challenge.

Here is an explanation of how the site works from the company’s co-founder and resident Phish head, Andy Magnes:

CrowdsEye was created as a digital scavenger hunt for live events, where you can submit photos, stories, and reviews based on categories determined before each event. Once fans vote on the best content, the most popular submissions receive points. Whoever has the most points in the end wins. (A full description of the point system can be found on the CrowdsEye FAQ).

We, essentially, built CrowdsEye for ourselves and our friends. We needed a place to channel the excitement and energy felt after a concert or other live event. A place where people shared based on similar interests rather than friend-based social networking. A site where you could visit after the show to see all the photos, hear all the stories, and read all the fan reviews. A place where the best content rose to the top and you could sort by popularity, category, etc. A place where up-and-coming writers could get discovered by other fans (this summer, top Phish reviews will have a chance to be published on Headstash Magazine). Last, we wanted to create a place for the regular fan to be able to tell their story. Unfortunately, some of these amazing stories—miracle tickets, avoiding arrest, tales from the road—never make it past a circle of friends. We hope that the best stories will rise to the top on CrowdsEye and reach a much wider audience.

Our Phish Summer Tour Challenge begins on Wednesday, June 6th and voting lasts until Sunday, September 16th. Although many will be playing to win, everyone is invited to browse around and check out what’s happening on tour from the eyes of the fans. CrowdsEye is a free service, and we hope to reward our users with prizes that fans really appreciate. We’ve already seen, read, and heard such amazing things from fans whose creativity would never have reached us otherwise. The community atmosphere and boundless creativity that has come to define the Phish family is exactly what CrowdsEye was created for. We can’t wait to see what will be posted on the upcoming summer tour!”

For now, sign up and browse the contests that currently have content and preview the categories for The Phish Tour Challenge! The contest will officially start Wednesday when YOU begin uploading YOUR photos, stories, and reviews!

1st prize = 4 tickets to any 2 future shows (not NYE), a Summer 2012 AJ Masthay triptych, and a signed copy of Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts.

man, took until just now to have the serious pre show/tour/adventure jitters. Would have actually been nice to sleep first before this set in.

I’m panicked because I can’t find my trusty tour sleeping bag. Had it forever. Damn!

  6. GhostPhunk Says:

you can cuddle with Alf on the pull out couch brah, no need to panic.

final hour of the work week. see you fools in Worcester. I guess dive bar. I’m descending mighty early after getting Kaveh at airport. not quite sure how to kill time in Worcester in the afternoon without drinking. (which would be ok if I weren’t driving back after the show tomorrow night)

  8. BrandonKayda Says:

I officially graduated Monday night. Strange feeling. This is going to be a busy summer.

  9. tzara's Says:

Congratulations @bk, that’s a great milestone. Where are you headed for college? The music thing going good?

  10. angryjoggerz Says:

Fuck, the sting of missing the tour opener is not nice.

  11. tzara's Says:

No doubt, @AJ. I’ve kind of had a couch tour state of mind once the dates dropped, so I’m just getting excited just to have some new music and see what they have in store this year.

And congrats to the former Supersonics for making the NBA finals. Should be here but whatever.

  12. Iriewalton Says:

    Couch ter unite!

Looking forward to new sounds and resisting the urge not to break the bank and head to the shows in SF.

  13. tzara's Says:

@Irie, we’re neighbors now, let me know if you head up to SEA, I’ll buy you a beer. I usually make it down you’re way once a year or so.

Oh and welcome to the Phish backwater.

  14. Iriewalton Says:

Definitely! Living in the PAC nw and having the Phish app helps to take the sting out of not being there live. Kinda hard to be mad when you’re surrounded by tall trees both in the ground and in your chalice.

  15. xpun Says:

always done the no spoilers before, but not this year.

questions though – does the phish app update the featured show to that nights show when it’s released or do I have to pay for it to get it quicker?

  16. tzara's Says:

@xpun, I think you can get it at pretty much the same time, but in my experience, the Phish app has been pretty terrible in streaming and the sound quality isn’t very good. I hear you if you just want to check something out, but I’m not sure it wouldn’t be better to just download something from etree, or Miner’s no spoilers links. For this tour my brother and I are sharing the ALACs.

I’ve really been frustrated with the Phish app though. YMMV.

  17. xpun Says:

    tzara – thanks

i’ve had the app for a long time and rarely ever use it, most of my listening is in the car and it always drops or buffers. i’ve done no spoilers in past but want to be a little quicker on the shows this year. think i will buy first two nights so i can download then IN UNDER 24 FUCKING HOURS!!!!! sorry got excited there. maybe do no spoilers later in tour. but too pumped for thursday night too wait.

  18. xpun Says:

    18 hours and 41 minutes

we have come a long way gentlemen.

  19. xpun Says:

    sabotage > mikes opens

  20. tzara's Says:

yeah, running the phish app and getting cut off in the middle of a jam is just too brutal. I’d rather do the AUD thing on no-spoilers. But if I download ALAC I can usually drag it onto my phone without seeing anything, and just play them from the folders.

  21. tba Says:

Hate to give myself credit, but in one of my ramblers I had this idea three/four months ago. Guess for 43 this UVM alum is not too spun. Reading about shows, special nuggets, people love that shit goes back to the 70′s even, moon with Zep shit like that, but now with everyone clicking at every show with a an ipod/iphone, technology allows facts to back up the legends, imagine the mud shark on you tube? actually for the record i enjoy the photos post shows, yet HATE the phone cameras during, one of my many contradictions.

My only bummer, wtf is Phish not at least streaming every show audio? time has come, Christ I’d even throw down 200 bucks for a subscription of every show video, but I’m old and don’t go to bars much anymore, so easy sell. Plus married and have a Pioneer 151 kuro.

  22. acleo Says:

    Massachusetts red eye!!!!!

  23. xpun Says:

    sweet acleo

congrats to all making tour opener. special buzz in the air. no shows in over 6 months, base is rabid……..

ive never been so pumped for a tour. need some unexplored phish realms

  24. acleo Says:

Phish app needs some retooling fo sho. It still is bad ass to think about watching shows on a 4×2″ screen. Wish i could see 10/22/94 again. High Way to…….
    Tour!!!

  25. ThePigSong Says:

so, that’s the glory hole tapes. I thought for sure it was going to be a Mike Gordon leak like we got last year (?). Not so sure now, also have way spotty internet and crappy MB air speakers.
