Phish Thoughts: The Book

> Check out this SPAC preview interview I did with The Daily Gazette of Schenectady, New York.

By Brian McElhiney

Phish are really on a roll this summer. In fact, the shows the Vermont-based jam band has performed so far represent the best of the now four-year reunion era, according to San Francisco-based journalist, Dave Calarco. “They came out this summer really with a purpose, it seems,” Calarco said from Phish’s recent tour stop in Carmel, Ind. “The last time they played, which was the New Years’ run at MSG [Madison Square Garden in New York City], the shows seemed somewhat lackluster…” READ ON!

> Here’s a book review of Phish Thoughts in Nug Magazine.

By Marco Alvarez

I first heard the American rock band Phish back in ‘03 through my college roommate who studied music and played the sax. There would often be music playing in our apartment being that he was a saxophonist, and my other roommate, a guitarist. I never learned to play an instrument myself, but I always appreciated hearing the sound of my friends jamming out or the sound of their favorite artists blanketing over the place with their charm. We all just shared what we liked…READ ON!

    Jeaus. Wow.

This is like being at the booth. What a show. Grouch tour fun when band crushing and free stream not buffering.

  2. robear Says:

Sally thru Lope sounded amazing on the iStream. Fantastic. Minor will be spitting soliloquies

Great show from what I could hear. Carini sand dankness. I think roses punch were the breather tunes?!

Hope those in attendance find their cars.

  3. Andrew Says:

Hope Corey chose Phish tonight! Anyone know for sure?

  4. Plord Says:

    Holy fuckballs Batman!

Lots to love tonight. Mike meatball action in the Light Up was redonk and elevated the whole joint. “classically contoured” Stash, nice to get it in that slot but I was feeling a Gin that never came. Pre-show music included a “Slippery people” so I was thinking maybe a Great Curve opener but I’ll take the PsychoKiller in a Tube.

Carini sick. Sand ultra sick but eye lawn was going off on their glowstick war and completely missed how sick it was. What? You’re crawling on the ground during this? GET UP man, so you can GET DoWN!

I am really not sure what happened to that Sally. All of a sudden you could see Trey just LAY INTO it and boom, double time shred fest. I had some kids around me during that part and they had no idea what to do, just stared slack jawed at the screens. Then a nice swampy, irregular Ghost.

The speaker upgrade for the lawn doesn’t suck. Packed as hell, kind, but around me, kinda out of their depth. Was funny. Minds: blown.

    Two more like that please.

  5. YborCity Says:

How the hell was the Tube sandwich?????

  6. Plord Says:

So I’m not the only one who was hearing Izabella teases tonight? Forget where…

  7. punkmug Says:

I just listened to the SallyGhost on the LP App plugged to the hi-fi. Holy Lord Jebus is that the business! Great stuff.

  8. Plord Says:

Ybor my section of the lawn rose 5 feet in the air during the Tube sandwich and vibrated in place when they dropped back into the Tube jam.

  9. punkmug Says:

two shows in a row with Izabella teases! YEM>Izabella is coming..

    gnight peeps. much love.

  10. BrandonKayda Says:

    Sweet 1:35 Tube 😉

  11. YborCity Says:

@Plord — fucking love that description. Can’t wait to hear it!

  12. Andrew Says:

    Place must’ve been bonkers!

  13. Andrew Says:

Yeah Tube was too short 😉

I love the Phish app and how quickly we can listen. Sick sick stuff, dropped in the right groove and just ripped the roof off. The minutes seem to last a lifetime.

Lifeboy will be a nice landing pad tomorrow or Sunday

  14. robear Says:

    I heard they soundcheckd Izabella.

I think I asked for that Halleys from quad C 99 on twitter. Jab bless!

High Plord! Phuck yeah! The Sally went ballistic for a spell

  15. robear Says:

    There you go @ BK:

    Sally + Ghost = 25 minute jam

Oh dear god what a show. Solid from stem to stern. Lots of talk in the lots about how Furthur was playing down the road tonight, so naturally tonight would be a rager.

When the Sally Jam hit I felt a gentle pressure against by skull. I looked down and my brain was in pieces.

I can’t wait to get another listen. Got to keep it on its toes.

  18. MrCompletely Says:

on its brain toes you mean?

pretty sure that mind babies have brain toes

  19. sumodie Says:

Home! phew…gonna be brutal driving 2+ hours home each night

Wow, what a show. When high, very high, otherwise first time this tour I was less accepting of the ‘std fare’

Set 1 peaks: Tube>Psycho>Tube (that made my whole night in fact) -the show flow till that point was very fluid (and the best show flow segment if the night). Then the antics bifurcated the set leaving Light Up as the other terrific highlight

Set 2 the peaks were awesome and the rest I was less accepting of: Carini, Sand, esp Sally (my fav of the night), and Ghost

Tom & the Dude did not make my Antelope after the JB version

Band was clearly having fun but felt a bit tired/stretched at times. When Trey dug deep, the payoff was great (that Sally jam seemed like Trey jumping off a cliff to see what would happen -wished he do that more often). Otherwise I’m still hoping to catch another fluid show.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the night, SPAC is great warts and all. Gotta hunker down and save energy for the next two

  20. sumodie Says:

I dig Plord’s way with words. Word about those glowsticking and not ass shaking during that Sand

The dank heat was eating at me tonight -how I yearned for the delicious breezes at Jones Beach

zzz time as Carini assaults my ears, lol

  21. voopa Says:

Just gave Carini>Sand and the Sneakin’ Ghost a proper spin…um, holy shit.

  22. sumodie Says:

Yup, at about ~7:49 in that Sally Trey just seems to jump off the cliff -completely blew my mind

  23. sumodie Says:

So like Tom & the Dude come out for Antelope…

they do their cool shtick, Tom leaves (you’re awesome as always) but the Dude stays on to get his cracked out rock star whackadoodle on. Clearly the band has affection for him but the Dude is cracked

  24. sumodie Says:

love the brooding murkiness of this Ghost

    ok, replay sux for shuteye

  25. ElJefe Says:

Did he have his lawn mower w him Sumodie?
