Stein’s Shots: Best of Leg One

“Steam” – 6.30.12, East Troy, WI

Michael Stein is one of the premiere concert photographers on the scene today. With an impeccable sense of the moment, Stein captures priceless portraits of his subjects time and time again. It just so happens that he is also a huge Phish fan. Hitting the road with the band for most of Leg One, Stein has hand selected a 38-shot gallery that represents his favorite shots of 2012 to share with Phish Thoughts today. I want to personally thank Michael for sharing his work with this site for over three years, and here’s to future collaboration! This post provides a preview, but be sure to CLICK OVER to view the rest of his Leg One gallery!

Some people, they like to go out dancing
And other peoples, they have to work. Just watch me now
And there’s even some evil mothers
Well they’re gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
Y’know that, women, never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo And that, y’know, children are the only ones who blush
And that, life is, just to die

Gotta stay in shape for Leg2! Don’t wanna get run down by the fire breathing tweezer at bgca

DC gbott does not suck. Nice trippy lil jam there. Is the supposed best version from leg1? Too much to keep track of

Awesome read, thanks for the post, palms

Sounds like I’d better start saving pennies for 2013PH

  15. Robear Says:

    Palmer FTW!

Met and hung out with Kuroda for a minute at the Alpine Lodge. Very chill. I didn’t ask him anything about lights or Phish though. Next time.

  16. thedayman Says:

thanks for the article, palmer. super interesting read

i know a lot of people hate on the opening whale drenched segment of the star lake light, but i love that segment of the jam. i find it to be a new school sort of tension/release mechanism, that helps set up the back end of the jam for me (which is definitely far superior). i totally understand why people don’t like it, but as a 3.0 kid, i do really like the tonal blending of the whale, and i think trey used it to perfection there. ::ducks::

Talking to the future wife about doing a Bay Area/ Wine Country/ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass honeymoon. Anyone been to Hardly Strictly before? I know I should expect lots of crowds and a bit of a shitshow I assume, but just wondering if anyone else has been and has any comments on it. We’d probably only hit that for a day.

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

Alpine all day. Phish is better as a whole

  19. Mr.Miner Says:

And I love star lake, just think band is more “on” at alpine

  20. Mr.Miner Says:

Festival in HI is the only “surprise” then can really pull off after abandoning in 99

  21. MiA Says:

Yeah the whole whale effect sounds much more stereo and 3D to me in the room. Especially with the lights.

  22. MiA Says:

I think Alpine had high energy sections of setlists, and lower energy sections of setlists. Still well played.

  23. MiA Says:

Not a big 46 days fan so after ghost that show for me is in cool off mode.
    No more improv.

  24. MiA Says:

    AV1 whole show really good.

  25. Robear Says:

Miner, I was blown away by tons of stuff just on listen back.

The ‘Light>Paug>7 below’ feels like a wormhole. The band seems to slip into a hole and pop out another side. Covering never before seen territory.

Alpine ‘Light>Ghost’ a blast of healing energy.
