Back to The Garden

Madison Square Garden

On Tuesday, Phish announced what everybody has known for quite a while, the boys will be back in New York City for their New Year’s Run. It has been no secret that the band signed a multi-year deal with MSG in 2010, and everyone has known since years ago where we’d be come December 28, 2012—back in The Garden again. Phish and New Year’s Eve at MSG has become an institution over the years, as the community has descended upon the capitol of the world for their end of the year celebrations in 1994 (just the 30th), 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2011, and now 2012. And following a series of bunk performances in New York City last holiday season, I’d expect Phish to come out polished and firing for redemption come the end of December. Although the band has just as much time off as they did last year before the run, one would expect Trey to hold practices this time around—something that was absent from 2011’s debacle. Only a week after the long-awaited date of 12.21.2012, we will filter back into The World’s Most Famous Arena to conclude, without question, the best year of Phish since their return. But this time, it’s gonna’ be different!

For the first time in 23 years, Madison Square Garden will completely remove the seats from their floor and offer general admission tickets! But there is a catch that might make a huge difference depending on how hard they patrol the floor. Instead of having one, flowing open floor, MSG will sell “GA front” and “GA rear” tickets. The effect of this segmentation could result in more crowded environs for both sections. Without the ability for the masses to “push up” and crowd the front when the show begins, the back of the floor may not loosen up as usual and provide the dance space that spunions have come to love on GA floors. Perhaps fans’ preoccupation with the floor will free up the classic 300 level walkway that was so congested by construction last year?  Here is the ideal scenario: they “undersell” the floor and require a separate entrance for all GA ticket holders, disallowing anyone without a ticket and bracelet from coming near the GA area. Who knows how things will turn out, but after last year’s clusterfuck at MSG, any change has to improve the situation!

The mail order window is now open through October 15, and with the new setup, one can request GA Floor only, though cannot specify front or rear. This is always a nice option so that one isn’t stuck with a handful of 400 level stubs come mid-October. Best of luck in the lottery, and we’ll be meeting in The Big Apple before you know it for a final serving of 2012 Phish!

What’s up, BB? Hope everyone’s been well.

I’ve been trying to hold down my excitement for MSG as my girl and I are on in a rocky patch. I ruined her bday/concert experience last week and have since been trying to make up for it. I’ll do the first 3 obv but its gonna be tough to try and get her to do nye. I’ve avoided the discussion until I have tix secured. Ugh. She’s seen the past two nye shows and doesn’t like PHiSH so it would be her taking one for the team again. Right now I don’t see that happening. Plus I’m trying to grow up and be a partner and make her happy too. The selfish side of me says “how often does PHiSH play the garden?”

  3. Guyute711 Says:

Mitch you need to de-value NYE. It’s amateur night, etc….. Then you give her a night every year that belongs to her. You can do this.

  4. Guyute711 Says:

The end of the show is always so jarring.

  5. steamer Says:

love the Dick’s Light video at the 12min35second mark when the quasi-hotties on rail are getting hosed by that groove for the ages … love the connection taking place there between music and audience

  6. ren Says:

@Mitch-Short term investment for long term gain. No NYE this year allows another Holiday run in the next. We need a little midtown meet-up one of these days…you know for a hetty beer or something 😉

  7. PigSong Says:

your girl likes Umphreys but not Phish? Kind of suspect don’t you think 🙂

  8. MiA Says:

My predicition, Phish makes us regret every show we miss in 2013.

Probably starting with the MSG run.

I am very happy I hit Cincy, and Star Lake, and LB and BGCA and Dicks. Feel like I won the “Phish” lottery in great shows. But there are a dozen more I really wish I would have been at.

My $11K AMEX bill was paid today. Can’t really think about MSG, which is far more expensive than SF.

    Sorry about your luck Chicago

Got in some surprisingly good blues last night with AW at Kingston Mines. Shredder middle aged lady surprised the Heck out of me and then the smooth operator Carl Weathersby making the panties drop on the other side.

Thanks for the hospitality! Glad we got out last night.

  11. ren Says:

@MiA- sheesh!!! thats some Amex bill. Here’s my one shot at enabling:

MSG technically falls into 2012 finances. Clean slate for 2013???

    Thats all I got

  12. mitch Says:

Good words guyute. Working on it.

Nice jab pigsong, shes actually 15 so shes right in line with the kiddies that see UM. 🙂 Actually tho, she doesn’t dig trey. She’s a jerry girl. What ya gonna do? We haven’t seen unphreys since. Would see em if its easy but won’t go out of our way.

That said, it’s not like anything else in the city would be more fun and all her friends are PHiSH kidz. So I’m still trying for tix… Ya know, in case.

Ren, I retired from drinking the day after the concert I fucked up. Finally ready to accept I don’t have an off switch and that I suck at drinking. Glad to burn one with ya tho.

  13. ren Says:

Good for you @Mitch…cut way back on drinking in the past few years as well. Too many cons…not enough pro’s. I like your idea much better anyway 😉 Maybe we can celebrate once we see some CC holds.

  14. mitch Says:

Woosta roses to clear my head before going to work.

  15. mitch Says:

Worst part about my timing of quitting drinking… I’ve got 18 nugget nectars left that gdad kicked down to me that day.

My loss is the BBs gain come nye run tho. Pay that one forward.

  16. mitch Says:

Anyone else have an iPhone 5 and keep pulling it out of your pocket upside down cause the headphone jack is on the other side for the first time in 5 years? Ya me either…

Guyute, the nye ghost this year will be worth the price of admission. #ghostfan

  17. MiA Says:

I just listened to Dick’s Undermind 2x in a row.

Way to end a first set.

  20. Jtran Says:

Missing NYE could suck, but gotta appease the lady sometimes. There’s always (for now) another NYE show, but good chicks that you really click with are a dime a dozen. .02

  21. Quantum Says:

Am I the only one who thinks last years NYE show was the bomb? It seems to be the public opinion that it was a “bunk” or “mailed in” show… I was in attendance that night and remember transcending into the musical heavens, and thinking to myself that aside from the theatrics with the levitation and whatnot, the entire Steam>ALS>DWD sequence was the best live music had ever witnessed. I thought to myself “So the new year’s stunt is giving us the jam we’ve all been begging for”

Just my experience… but I was literally changed forever by that show… From first note to last.

  22. SillyWilly Says:

    Your girl is awesome, Jtran.

Glad mine gives me a great way to see you two a lot over the next few months.

  23. Dorn76 Says:

Seeing 3 of 4 shows at MSG will be tough, Mitch.

    We’re here for you.

    (wry emoticon)

  24. MiA Says:

    National Taco Day today.

  25. Phamily Berzerker Says:

“There’s always (for now) another NYE show, but good chicks that you really click with are a dime a dozen.”

^ was this a typo Jtran?

I get the NYE logic. I waived off on 2010 for logistical reasons and enjoyed the webcasts.

Looks like the same for this year or not. Depending on some big deals dropping.

“Good chicks you click with” ” a dime a dozen”? If you are a gay photographer in Milan, yes? But a hetero-bachelor phish dude, no way! Or at the least you drop more than a handful of dimes just to find the right one who accepts the phish compulsion. If that is important to you. Even then sacrifices abound if you are gonna long-haul it. No balanced relationship is not without compassion or compromise. Both are new concepts to me and I got 20 years with Mrs. B.

No disrespect to my gay or photographer friends. 😉
