Election Music

One Nation Under a Groove (Thepin Stash)

Not to trivialize today’s important election, but if you’re a fan of great Phish, there is really only one choice. Just look at recent history. Bill Clinton took office in 1993, the beginning the band’s first peak era. Clinton served two terms through 2000, watching over’s Phish’s glory years, and at the end of his term, Phish called it quits for the first time. George W. Bush, arguably the biggest buffoon to ever sit in the Oval Office, was sworn in at the beginning of 2001 and served two terms during which the band managed to crank out merely 1 and 1/2 years of opiate-laced jamming in ’03 and ’04. Enter Barack Obama in 2009. Less than two months after the Democratic victor was inaugurated, Phish came back at Hampton Coliseum and entered the Golden Age of their career, playing their tails off for the last four years. So here we are at the political crossroads of 2012. Under a Democratic White House, we experienced ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’09, ’10, ’11, and ’12. Under a Republican watch, the band came into their own during the late ’80s and early ’90s, and graced us with ’03 and half of ’04. Those are the facts—and the choice is yours. Vote wisely, my friends!

On Election Day 2012, I bring you three choice cuts from each of the past four years. And here’s to four more years of Democratic Phish!

Just scoured the net for a link to the Trey article and couldn’t find one.

Looks like I’ll need to buy an issue of Rolling Stone for the first time in about 20 years.

I’ll poke around, but I read the actual magazine.

11/9/98 Gin. 1 of the illest.

Wow. the Disease supreme set delivers. 2010-11 Phish pretty consistently potent.

Glad to have Phish around. Probably going to see Phil next, out of respect and good vibes. Thinking the PLQ or something that avoids any artificial Garcia.

I really think Kuroda deserves a lot of kudos for taking Phish to the next level. phishthought: They wouldn’t be a rock band without him.

Happy Armistice Weekend everyone! Dirty work, hug a soldier. Congrats to the Enlightened States on the recent ballot initiatives that grant more freedoms. meanwhile in Canadia, snow. And phishthoughts to the hurricaned – can’t imagine being isolated in urbanity without power

I too just read the RS article (somehow I subscribe to this magazine, I think it came free with something), and it was good, insightful. Seems Trey really is not comfortable being the leader. Answers quite a few questions. I like Trey.

@makisupa- i think this is true if one pays attention to the light show. i respect CK and all that he does, but i do not watch the lights very often at shows. he may help get the band stoked which may, in-turn, influence the direction of the music or even the music itself. i go for the tunes. my eyes are usually closed while i am boogying or i am boogying and looking at the crowd. can’t wait for msg.

  15. makisupa Says:

Thanks Heady. I am in agreement, and was considering the attendees there for the ‘good time’, and not the “Skin it Back’ bustout or the segue out of ‘Light’. I was thinking how without him, le Poisson might be like MMW.

the minkins, the chess board, the ‘ween costumes – there is a lot of theatrics with the merry band of vermonters. I think CK5 allows the 80% of the attendees to get their fix, while the 20% hardcores dance with our eyes closed, feeling the jams wash over us – with some familiarity joining us to the band, while we all seek the new unexplored places. Lately, the places have been more emotional/cosmic, less thrilling/dangerous/cacophonic. Still ‘heady’ and in many ways, more amazing.

  16. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

word, makisupa- i know what you are saying.

  17. phoammhead Says:

trey’s still finding his way just like most humble, compassionate, spiritual and considerate people i know

i have following a similar path with alcohol and drug abuse except cocaine didn’t make me fall asleep, but i kinda get what maybe he’s really saying there. i understand where he is coming from but i don’t hate drugs. i do think drugs consumed in a destructive way take away an attractive life for me and when too high too often on drugs or alcohol, maybe i really am asleep . . . so to speak. i get that.

  18. voopa Says:

I’ve been asleep for sooo loonnngg…

  19. phoammhead Says:

yeah, you listen to shine and traveler and trey’s path comes out in his work no doubt about it

  20. makisupa Says:

I think trey is calling ‘powders’ drugs………reading between the lines a bit, and, at a distance, knowing what happened to him from 98-06

phoammhead, insightful. trey’s ultimate humility is beyond inspiring.

enjoying the Charlotte 95 GD Scarlet->Fire, I feel this was the last good Dead show, the music playing the band! Hornsby just a monster

  21. phoammhead Says:

i will add . . . as i consume moderately and responsibly this dank french broad ipa . . . that i got a good life. now, i’d like to add a little precious to this equation from time to time . . . legally without fear and paranoia . . . as a puff should feel . . . complete freedom.

  22. phoammhead Says:

yeah, i think you are right, maki. at least that’s what i’m going to choose to believe, too. he’s not going on a tirade or anything, that’s for sure.

  23. phoammhead Says:

yeah, when i was all full of myself . . . yeah, there was a time when i was really full of myself . . . i was a trainwreck. had to reset the picture late 2005 early 2006. i’m better now, but not perfect, of course. i’ve got a great relationship with bek thanks to phish and not being a trainwreck or any where close to one.
