Election Music

One Nation Under a Groove (Thepin Stash)

Not to trivialize today’s important election, but if you’re a fan of great Phish, there is really only one choice. Just look at recent history. Bill Clinton took office in 1993, the beginning the band’s first peak era. Clinton served two terms through 2000, watching over’s Phish’s glory years, and at the end of his term, Phish called it quits for the first time. George W. Bush, arguably the biggest buffoon to ever sit in the Oval Office, was sworn in at the beginning of 2001 and served two terms during which the band managed to crank out merely 1 and 1/2 years of opiate-laced jamming in ’03 and ’04. Enter Barack Obama in 2009. Less than two months after the Democratic victor was inaugurated, Phish came back at Hampton Coliseum and entered the Golden Age of their career, playing their tails off for the last four years. So here we are at the political crossroads of 2012. Under a Democratic White House, we experienced ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’09, ’10, ’11, and ’12. Under a Republican watch, the band came into their own during the late ’80s and early ’90s, and graced us with ’03 and half of ’04. Those are the facts—and the choice is yours. Vote wisely, my friends!

On Election Day 2012, I bring you three choice cuts from each of the past four years. And here’s to four more years of Democratic Phish!

  1. Mr. Palmer Says:

I want to read O’Reilly’s book about Lincoln but I don’t want to give him any of my money. Library never has it.

  2. Mr. Palmer Says:

Interesting reading that Neeson was originally cast the part of Lincoln but left the project because he felt he was “too old ” for the role.

Movie is based on this book..

  3. Gavinsdad Says:

Parenting does have its high points/teaching moments. Giving my eldest son a pep talk because he has stage fright about a poetry reading he has at 2pm (a very short and sweet poem of his is being included in a K-4 book called “Philadelphia stories”) is so nice. Its just not the type of thing my dad would have ever given me pointers on, or even listened to me vent about.

  4. BingosBrother Says:

Give him a crack for me gdaddy. Good luck.

  5. PigSong Says:

Not saying this is right either way, but I bet a google search of O’Reilly’s book would turn up tons of free e-reader files. I’m reading almost exclusively on my iPhone now.

  6. El Duderino Says:

wow. for those who haven’t had a listen, the 7/2/98 Den Gra Hall show is super tight and such a killer AUD as others including Miner have mentioned. Do not pass this one by on the spreadsheet if you have some time today to have a listen.

  12. joe Says:

What up BB, been a minute.

Gorgeous and crisp fall days here on the lake. I seem to have settled into an alternating zazen/bikram schedule, every morning at oh-shit-o-clock kinda thing, and (of course) I feel about 1000% better than before I had this routine down. Funny how that works.

Debashish Battacharya tonight at UVM, dirt cheap. Taking Mr. 9, the tabla student, to have his mind blown. Fully expect my own mind to react likewise, as DB may be the most accomplished slide guitar player on earth. He’s in the discussion, anyway.

Seems like an Ultramarine kind of day. _Bel Air_, I think, then _Every Man and Every Woman Is a Star_.

RR Boogie 09 – the gift that keeps on giving. Only cd I have in the car and I’m always surprised at how much I enjoy it. I hardly drive at all and when I do it’s always been NPR, but now with the little one along I’ve been opting for more music – more of the time.
