TTFF: The Gems of MSG

12.28.12 (Graham Lucas)

The highlights of the Holiday Run make quite a formidable playlist, boasting many versions of the year and some jams that move beyond 2012 into the creme de la creme of the era. Enjoy!

Tweezer > Maze” 12.28 II

This refined, multi-faceted and fully-realized “Tweezer”—my pick for best of the era—leapt onto the top shelf of 2012 offerings on the very first night of the run.

Ghost > Piper” 12.31 II

Another gorgeous New Year’s Eve “Ghost” highlighted the 31st and paired up perfectly with this relentless “Piper.”

Harry Hood” 12.30 E

Trey remains incredibly active throughout this “Hood” and the rest of the band responded beautifully, vaulting it into the elite versions of 3.0.

Wolfman’s Brother > LDB > Wolfman’s” 12.28 I

Swanky funk interplay mixed with holiday cheer resulted in a surprisingly original take on “Wolfman’s.”

Disease > 20 Years Later > Carini” 12.30 II

This exploratory sequence stunned the MSG audience with its patience and sinister tone. “Disease” broke through the sterile playing of the previous three sets with a ever-darkening adventure while “Carini”—the most unique jam of the run—challenged any version ever played with its abstract and menacing path.

David Bowie” 12.28 II

The band dropped the most impressive “David Bowie” of the year to closing out the first night.

Slave to the Traffic Light” 12.30 II

It’s been a while since we heard a “Slave” that packed such an emotional wallop. At risk of sounding repetitive, I’d definitely give this version the nod for the best of the year.

    addicted to 4.2.98 twist

  3. phishm Says:

and one last thing, as I’ve not spoken since a little while ago. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Why would you care? Because you listen to Phish. That makes you care right there. I bet if everyone was just themself each day that we could all learn somthing off of someone just being themself. Or once again I may be wrong. Peace all. For realz this time.
Just trying to spice things up. Go about your business.

  4. phishm Says:

One more thing. That twist is the shit. Check it out on Youtube. May very well be CK5’s best work to date. Talk about almost looking choreographed. I’ll take it.

  5. phishm Says:

OK, I’ll play the person everyone wants to hate, but can’t wait to read. It may piss some people off up north and maybe in Chicago, but I’m OK with that . In the end, it was all right.
So Jenny said when she was just 5 years old, there was nothing happening at all. Blah, blah blah.

She started shakin’ to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock ‘n’ Roll.

In the end, was it? Can your life be saved by music? I say yes, but have to add getting rid of the wretched old hag. Loving your current life, and taking care of your own. Then it was all right. Hate to say it, but was saved by Rock n Roll, and life.

Did I forget to mention, forget to mention Texas. Home of Mia and the useless blubber.
Do I smell? I smell undeniable truth.
It’s only the longhorns. It’s only the longhorns.

  7. Spasm Waiter Says:

Nimble fingers from Trey throughout Dicks CDT. Thoughtful playing w/ several inspired movements. What a gem that is.

  8. phishm Says:

Now to transpire onto something that I hold dearly, that would be Dick’s CDT. I take it as a sign from above to replace those that aren’t in it anymore. You have to look past the fact that they think they are in it because those that they listen to fruitfully are makin what they are, monetarily. In the end money fogs the real goal. What is that goal? You need to be honest with yourself and not fog that which inspired you to begin with. Or maybe those from Texas have different agendas and just want to be be with you all and not put in the real life work. Or once again, I may be wrong. I doubt it however.

  9. phishm Says:

and to put a period on the whole night of useless blabber from someone from Cincy. Peace out MiA. You are what those around here want to be like? In the end you are no leader. If you were then people wouldn’t despise you behind your back. I might as well do it to your face.
So take that you wannabe. Hope that frees up at least one person that was afraid to speak their mind due to you. Hear you at a show soon. Just won’t pass it along if you get me.

  10. phishm Says:

Forgot to say, go about your all’s business. I’m sure it’s important. Hockey just started, football playoffs, no phish tour. Exciting times. Soak them up before they are gone. Night all. Sweet dreams. Hope they mesh with your real life.

Excited for nfl and beer re-tastings tomorrow. Not pumped to leave our recent 75 degrees in sd

  14. Henry Says:

Phish blog by the twitter handle Babys Mouth that I know Miner has had a few disagreements with used the following two quotes in their most recent review of UM:

“There is almost no release to all the tension they create; it’s kind of like fucking on molly.”

“But “Conduit” meandered like a retarded child lost in the woods never to be found.”

Not really sure how I feel about either of those metaphors in a blog post about music, esp. the 2nd. It seems downright offensive
