TTFM: The Third Ten of 2012

12.28.12, MSG Graham Lucas)

12.28.12, MSG (Graham Lucas)

These jams are getting increasingly hard to put in any logical order, but the bottom line is that here we are with ten more very strong pieces of improv from 2012—and Friday I’ll lay down ten more.

30.Sand -> Nellie Kane” 6/8 II, Worcester, MA

An experiment in fusing robo-funk with bluegrass results in some very melodic groove interplay that evokes the feeling of late-’70s Grateful Dead dance jams.

29. “Carini” 8/31 I, Denver, CO

This was the first sign that IT was going down at Dick’s.

***

28. “Tweezer” 8/17 II, San Francisco, CA

The underrated “Tweezer” of the year moves from hard groove into filthy, storage-esque ambience.

27. Ghost” 12/31 II, MSG, NY

Overshadowed by the golf gag, this “Ghost” is actually quite gorgeous.

26. “Golden Age” 7/3 II, Wantagh, NY

Jones Beach’s “Golden Age” migrates into a final passage of downtempo, psych rock.

25.  “Simple” 8/18 II, San Francisco, CA

An abstract and melodic excursion in Bay Area psychedelia; a severely underrated jam.

24. “Wolfman’s Brother > LDB > Wolfman’s” 12.28 I, MSG, NY

Unconventional dance grooves merge with “Little Drummer Boy” tightly woven into pocket.

 ***

23. “Tweezer” 8.22 II, Kansas City, MO

A cathartic second set opener in the Heartland with quite the peak.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2.02-Tweezer.mp3]

***

22. “Piper” 7/8 II, Saratoga Springs, NY

This locked in version reprises the “Light” jam from earlier in the set.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2.08-Piper-3.mp3]

***

21. “Runaway Jim” 8/31 II, Denver, CO

Though not the most focused jam in the world, this “Jim” certainly hits some sweet spots along the way.

Morning folks. Any thoughts on those atty dates? I also saw a list this morning that included some arenas in the fall. I am not sure the old arena at hershey will be up to it, but they do have the giant center now. It seems like the dates on the fall tour side of things are more of a wish list than reality.

  2. Spike2518 Says:

    Marco!!!

  3. Jon Says:

During that Runaway Jim at Dick’s it was as if they were jamming to the huge full moon. A lunar excursion.

  4. MiA Says:

Great list. Thanks Miner! 2012 was a target rich environment.

The pre-ejamulation in BGCA Tweezer is my favorite of the year. Sick stuff there.

  5. jdub Says:

20-30 would be in the top 10 for ’09,’10, and ’11. Or at least most of these. Good time to be catching Phish shows.

Nice job breaking down ’12 so thoroughly @Miner. No matter how it gets diced, last year was a huge win. Can’t wait to hear what’s in store this summer/fall.

5+ hours of shoveling 33″ of snow over the weekend has me beat. And to top it of we had a leak from an ice damn on the roof last night. Good times. Hope everyone’s doing alright.

  6. MiA Says:

    Beware the widow maker snowstorms.

Don’t let old people shovel snow…

Lakewood Gin is perfect for Monday mornings.

  7. Guyute711 Says:

Watch out where the huskies go
don’t let old people shovel snow

  8. kayatosh Says:

    g’ morning, BB.

Looks like the SPAC Sally has slipped through the cracks.

Despite this omission, thanks again, miner, for keeping the phish juices flowing in the off-season. peace.

  9. jdub Says:

My 63 YO dad started snow blowing and made it 5 minutes before his lungs told him to stop. Of course he has pulminary fibrosis, which is new news and quite devastating for our family – doctor gives him around 3 years. Such is life.

  10. kayatosh Says:

jdub: tough stuff re. your dad. enjoy every minute with him. lost my old man in his young 60’s. rough.

  11. jdub Says:

The ‘Cuse best be watching out for the Huskies come Wednesday. Game of the year for UConn + pissed about being odd man out of conference shuffle = possible upset.

  12. jdub Says:

Makes you appreciate your time with family that’s for sure @Kaya.

  13. sumodie Says:

Don’t be posting nutter Attyatloew rumored dates here, boo! (Last nite’s list)

More great phish jams to-day, thnx mr M

  14. Guyute711 Says:

Keep dreaming jdub. With Southerland back the Cuse is going to be hard to beat from here on out.

Sorry to hear about your father. Best of luck to him.

  15. Kaveh Says:

Morning BBers! Hope all had a great and safe weekend.

@Miner: thanks for the list. 30 deep; what a year 2012 was.

  16. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

great version of The Weight from last night at The Grammys paying tribute to Levon, sandy Hook, et al. Brittany Howard rules.

  17. Shred Says:

Does anyone know the best sounding source for 6-14-95 Memphis mud?

  18. kayatosh Says:

shred: can’t say if it’s the best, but i’m quite happy with it:

    6.14.95
    Source: AKG 460s > D8
Conversion: Tascam DA-20 mkII > Marantz CDR 630 by Joby Semmler (jsemmler@aol.com)
CDR > EAC > WAV > SHN by Barton Hodges (barton@shaggy.etree.org)

That tweezer is like its own college course in phish.

  19. Shred Says:

Thanks KT. That is the one I got. I keep praying CMil will set me up with a remaster of this show.

Was there. One of my favorite nights.

  20. kayatosh Says:

shred: here’s the link. only one seeder though.

    http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=558498

  21. kayatosh Says:

sweet, shred. love the SOAM from that show too.

  22. kayatosh Says:

speaking of long form jams, giving 12.3.97 bowie>possum attention this morn. 48 mins combined.

  23. Shred Says:

Agree. Melt was sick. Can’t argue with sneaking the don’t you wanna go and spock’s either.

This actually sounds good. Just have become so spoiled with primarily boards. But the sound is pretty nice on this.

  24. Shred Says:

DO you have a source for the Landover Free? Another one of my favoritenights. That show left me blown away too.

  25. kayatosh Says:

    shred: 11.22.95

    source:
Schoeps MK4 (front row TS) -> Schoeps Power Supply -> Sony TCD-D7

    Transfer:
Sony 59ES > Marantz CDR630 > EAC (Secure Mode with correct offset) > WAV > Soundforge (5 sec fades at beginning and end of sets) > MKW > SHN

Big thanks to Blair Willis for the DAT seed.

    Transfer by scottz (metawhy@yahoo.com)
