TTFM: The Third Ten of 2012

12.28.12, MSG Graham Lucas)

12.28.12, MSG (Graham Lucas)

These jams are getting increasingly hard to put in any logical order, but the bottom line is that here we are with ten more very strong pieces of improv from 2012—and Friday I’ll lay down ten more.

30.Sand -> Nellie Kane” 6/8 II, Worcester, MA

An experiment in fusing robo-funk with bluegrass results in some very melodic groove interplay that evokes the feeling of late-’70s Grateful Dead dance jams.

29. “Carini” 8/31 I, Denver, CO

This was the first sign that IT was going down at Dick’s.

28. “Tweezer” 8/17 II, San Francisco, CA

The underrated “Tweezer” of the year moves from hard groove into filthy, storage-esque ambience.

27. Ghost” 12/31 II, MSG, NY

Overshadowed by the golf gag, this “Ghost” is actually quite gorgeous.

26. “Golden Age” 7/3 II, Wantagh, NY

Jones Beach’s “Golden Age” migrates into a final passage of downtempo, psych rock.

25.  “Simple” 8/18 II, San Francisco, CA

An abstract and melodic excursion in Bay Area psychedelia; a severely underrated jam.

24. “Wolfman’s Brother > LDB > Wolfman’s” 12.28 I, MSG, NY

Unconventional dance grooves merge with “Little Drummer Boy” tightly woven into pocket.

23. “Tweezer” 8.22 II, Kansas City, MO

A cathartic second set opener in the Heartland with quite the peak.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2.02-Tweezer.mp3]

22. “Piper” 7/8 II, Saratoga Springs, NY

This locked in version reprises the “Light” jam from earlier in the set.

21. “Runaway Jim” 8/31 II, Denver, CO

Though not the most focused jam in the world, this “Jim” certainly hits some sweet spots along the way.

    Fuck Cancer!

Mrs. Berzerker’s brother is going under the knife right now on is prostate. Think you got it tough? Dude may stop the cancer, but gets a real high likelihood of incontinence and erectile dysfunction for life. He’s 42.

    That shit is lame!

  2. kayatosh Says:

    vibes, PB. rough.

  3. Kevin Says:

So ive been out of the loop for awhile. What are the rumors so far for next summer. Heard fest Aug 16 in Poconos. And obviously Dicks labor day weekend.

  4. sumodie Says:

jdub, vibes to your dad. Hope you two get some great quality time together going forward

  5. Shred Says:

KT- Do you think the Charlie M remasters are a major upgrade from these other guys?

  6. kayatosh Says:

Shred: Have not done any source comparisons. I grabbed a few of the recent the charlie miller’s for shows i didn’t already have in the kayarchives. i don’t believe charlie is performing any great magic as far as mastering, just releasing a few phish auds. that have heretofore been unheard by the masses. He undoubtedly does a great job.

  7. tela'smuff Says:

damn, i need some new Phish. i think i’ve exhausted 2012 playback at this point. last hurdle was the mehSG Tweezer and @Stapes sold me. it’s for sure the best of 2012. i like the ’11 Dicks Tweezer better still. either way, sometimes it takes me the proper head space and environment to get it. driving in a car through the mountains while Stapes busts ass seemed to do the trick.

if those Atty dates for summer are anywhere near accurate, it’ll be Chicago, Festival, and Dicks for me, and then wait for the Fall Tour.

  8. Luther T. Justice Says:

    @telas

Have you checked out the new rendition of the classic “Silver Nickels & Golden Dimes”? That should satisfy your need for new music.

  9. tela'smuff Says:

if you mean Jewel’s version, yes i have. big fan. i hate Robin for her dismissal of it. it’s weird how Howard can make me a Jewel fan.

  10. Mr.Miner Says:

Listened to Spac sally last night, it struck me as generic Phish jam #2

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Generic jam #2 is ok I guess but #4 is the source

    Now I’m curious…

#1 has to be a possum jam
    #2 is the Suzy jam

    How many are there?

  12. tela'smuff Says:

    #3 is the Wolf/Gin jam

  13. kayatosh Says:

funny how we advocate for certain jams. i feel like spac sally’s attorney.

  14. kayatosh Says:

    10.9.99 ghost->free. $$$ the -> is extended and lush.

  15. MiA Says:

Spinning SPAC’s Sneaking Sally right now…

  16. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

As its attorney, you should then be cognizant of its rights and more specifically you should be aware of the reality of its fate. No need to sugar coat it for your client, counselor.

  17. RoosterPizza Says:

    @xpun

I am, at the moment, tied to a holiday weekend (Labor Day Weekend) because of the dumb cunt marrying my best friend. To top it off, that was the same day we got married, but it wasn’t a holiday weekend the day we did it. Plus, we decided to get married on Monday, and then we made it happen on Friday. I see years of wedding planning, and, well, I don’t see nearly as many happy couples.

  18. sumodie Says:

    Fight the power, SPAC Sally

Don’t let the Man get you down!

  19. MiA Says:

I’m not sure if this is exculpatory evidence but yeah the 9:10 Jam is a big D Major Blues Jam (I think).

I love that Jam. Ghost, Gin, Piper, etc. Dozens of jams based on that lick. Very common jam, but … well one that just deserves a familiar hug, not disdain.

Well all know if you listen to a lot of Phish, the jams all come out of the same place, and Phish often goes back to their familiar. Embrace the familiar.

  20. Spike2518 Says:

    Marco

  21. MiA Says:

And the 7/8 Piper is fist pumping anthemic glory. Nothing wrong with that either.

Sometimes I think the whole show has to be listened to in order to appreciate the higher peaks of sections of a show.

  22. tela'smuff Says:

we gave that Piper a spin on saturday @MiA. its a really good jam, some nice peaks. Trey crushes it. i completely echo @nathan’s query as to who is overrating it? although i wouldn’t argue where it falls at on the Miner list.

  23. Jtran Says:

    morning comrades

JT, Miguel and Frank Ocean at grammys last night – $$$

  24. Mr.Miner Says:

e.g Phish net reviewer says SPAC Piper is the best jam of Leg One and that it’s “not even close.” I have seen many pimp it on Twitter too. I dig it, but its just not in the “holy shit” category.

The Spac Sally is just generic type 2 Phish, nothing really going on there that deserves much attention imo

  25. Jtran Says:

    @AW

Ducks v. Hawks tomorrow! 2 best teams in NHL?
