TTFM: The Third Ten of 2012

12.28.12, MSG Graham Lucas)

12.28.12, MSG (Graham Lucas)

These jams are getting increasingly hard to put in any logical order, but the bottom line is that here we are with ten more very strong pieces of improv from 2012—and Friday I’ll lay down ten more.

30.Sand -> Nellie Kane” 6/8 II, Worcester, MA

An experiment in fusing robo-funk with bluegrass results in some very melodic groove interplay that evokes the feeling of late-’70s Grateful Dead dance jams.

29. “Carini” 8/31 I, Denver, CO

This was the first sign that IT was going down at Dick’s.

28. “Tweezer” 8/17 II, San Francisco, CA

The underrated “Tweezer” of the year moves from hard groove into filthy, storage-esque ambience.

27. Ghost” 12/31 II, MSG, NY

Overshadowed by the golf gag, this “Ghost” is actually quite gorgeous.

26. “Golden Age” 7/3 II, Wantagh, NY

Jones Beach’s “Golden Age” migrates into a final passage of downtempo, psych rock.

25.  “Simple” 8/18 II, San Francisco, CA

An abstract and melodic excursion in Bay Area psychedelia; a severely underrated jam.

24. “Wolfman’s Brother > LDB > Wolfman’s” 12.28 I, MSG, NY

Unconventional dance grooves merge with “Little Drummer Boy” tightly woven into pocket.

23. “Tweezer” 8.22 II, Kansas City, MO

A cathartic second set opener in the Heartland with quite the peak.

22. “Piper” 7/8 II, Saratoga Springs, NY

This locked in version reprises the “Light” jam from earlier in the set.

21. “Runaway Jim” 8/31 II, Denver, CO

Though not the most focused jam in the world, this “Jim” certainly hits some sweet spots along the way.

fwiw, getting the “no festi” message on multiple fronts at this point.

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

Plord – cancer sucks. Like you, too many family members have had one form or the other. Sometimes I wonder if that will be my fate as well. Oh well. – Hal

^this. couldn’t have said it any better.

Recently enjoyed a couple Devil’s Britches IPA by Highland Brewing in Asheville…it’s one of their seasonals, could prob call it a red IPA. Full malty start with bitter hoppy finish. Real nice.

  4. Mr. Palmer Says:

Finally getting around to the Went 2001… is that a little James Brown funk vamp they got going on here?

No Festie.. that sucks. Poconos sounds like it would be a blast.

  5. gavinsdad Says:

If I don’t have a fest 2 wknds before labor day then I’ll set my sights on Dicks.

Would have been nice to Fest 10 tho. Cue the Tom Petty lyrics.

  6. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

no festi? see ya’ll at the gorge.

  7. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

My cousin has breast cancer. She writes a popular blog about it. Her dad also had breast cancer. Yeah, fuck cancer.

  8. jdub Says:

Yeah, no festival means definite Dicks and a few more fall shows for me. May work out in my favor cause I could never resist an east coast Fest.

  9. jdub Says:

I’ll jump on the fuck cancer/terminal illness bandwagon. Dealing with that shit right now with my old man.

  10. sumodie Says:

    No festi makes Dick’s IT!

  11. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    dick’s is already it.

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

i’m gonna go on record now and say that other than the storage jam, musically, superball was highly overrated.

  13. BooVT Says:

Yes, Fuck cancer. It took my mother and my mother-in-law, both in their sixties, five years apart. I miss them both very much. My prayers go out to everyone dealing with it now.

  14. thedayman Says:

    ^blasphemy. 7/3 set 1 and 2 are bomb.

mound, asihtos, reba, bowie. shit even wilson was hot.

dwd, light, waves>wtu all hot in set 2.

7/2 day sets kinda sucked, set 3 was tight.

7/1 was legit too. simple is a go to. perfect head space for that odyssey into the unknown.

  15. jdub Says:

But it is kind of sad to think no festival again. Dick’s is a suitable replacement for sure. But there is no chance of a storage set at Dick’s, or art installations, or a ferris wheel, or crazy random drum n base late night sets. There is nothing I enjoy more than a proper PHiSH festival… Well maybe sex.

  16. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

dayman, i barely ever go back to listen to much of those shows. the reba was great, but there were no huge jams from that festival.

  17. plord Says:

I have started angling for the Gorge and/or Dick’s, but the last, most complicated, most expensive and unpredictable piece of Return Of The Son of the House Remodel starts in a month and the Mrs. is having none of it right now.

More accurately, she is losing her mind because we will have minimum 3 weeks with no functional kitchen, a big ass hole in the house looking straight into the lake and wind, kids still in school, and no relatives close enough to assist or serve as an alternate home base.

    Waiting for better days.

(Still putting in orders as soon as the lottery drops)

  18. jdub Says:

But DF, you can’t take out an hour of some the deepest improv laid down by the band ever and say SB IX was highly overrated.

Kind of like saying if you take out Undermind, Chalkdust, Light, and Sand then Dick’s ’12 is overrated.

7/3/11 was a great show by any standard. One of the few great two setters in this era.

  19. plord Says:

I still listen to Superball, huge jams or no. I’ll run 7/3 from the Destiny Unbound straight through to the end. The other days not so much.

  20. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

jdub, yes i can. i can do whatever i want.

  21. thedayman Says:

i feel you @df. i definitely have some emotional ties into that weekend just being very special. they’re aren’t any dicks level jams.

however still some great improv, and obviously the storage jam is incredible.

check out that 7/1 simple too, the livephish vid actually does a great job catching that. love that jam. beautiful stuff.

  22. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

yeah dayman, you know what i mean. still a fucking amazing weekend of course.

  23. thedayman Says:

    there not they’re. jesus.

  24. jdub Says:

@Plord, being a kitchen designer/cabinetmaker/remodeler I deal with the emotional ebb and flows of homeowners daily. I do about 5 kitchen remodels a year and the hardest part of my job is keeping people sane without losing my dignity. Best of luck with your project, the payoff can be huge.

  25. thedayman Says:

for sure. needs to be a festi this year too.

i have a feeling people in the phish inc community are trying to throw off the scent, re: fest. 30th anniversary? no festival this past year? supposed to be a big year of touring? huge leaps in jamming/connectedness in 2012?

seems the conditions are ripe for the taking.
