TTFF: 1996—The Transitional Year

8.4.96 Red Rocks

8.4.96 Red Rocks

Inspired by some recent banter in the Twittersphere…

Wilson > Disease” 8.14 I, Hershey, PA

Right off the bat in Hershey, the band dropped this opening sequence

Mike’s > Lifeboy” 8.13 II, Noblesville, IN

An adventurous mid-’90s “Mike’s” in the yet-to-be developed Cornfields of Deer Creek.

Tweezer” 8.14 II, Hershey, PA

Legend has always said it that this Herhsey show before The Clifford Ball wasn’t so hot. I never understood that assessment. Here’s another reason why.

Mike’s Song” 10.29 II, Tallahassee, FL

A percussion-drenched “Houses in Motion” jam laces the latter part of this jam in the final show before their seminal “Remain In Light” Halloween set.

The Great Curve” 10.31 II, Atlanta, GA

Speaking of “Remain in Light,” I saw this Tweet yesterday and I immediately agreed.

If you’re not familiar…

Crosseyed > Antelope” 11.2 II, West Palm Beach, FL

The band began to shape-shift on the first night after Halloween as Karl Perazzo stayed on tour for a few.

Tweezer” 11.11 II Grand Rapids, MI

A post-Halloween signpost on the long road to Cow Funk.

2001 > Llama” 12.6 I, Las Vegas, NV

One of the early, jammed-out versions from the final night of tour.

Tweezer” 12.1 II, Los Angeles, CA

Three “Tweezers” on Friday? I dig it. This is a monster from the tail end of Fall Tour.

Slave to the Traffic Light” 8.17 II, Plattsburgh, NY

An all-time classic.

I just mentioned the Great Curve on here recently. I have been waiting to hear them play it again ever since that day. One of the most fun days I have ever had.

  10. Spasm Waiter Says:

  11. dorn76 Says:

    Risky ’96 jamming. Fuck yeah.

  12. roberto luongo Says:

saw most shows in 96. only missed a couple. def some gems. but my brain was sick of the new ballads and was chasing summer-fall 95. which I would chase for the rest of my phish career so what can you do.

Hershey Tweezer def a favorite of mine as is LA.

and of course that massive MIke’s from when the song wasn’t a fuckin joke.

    have fun comrades

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

96 is the Ginger Jedi Stepchild to 95 and 97. you could tell they were in the midst of big things all Fall and then BOOM! Remain in Light. The rest is history. 96 is so undervalued by the phisherverse.

  14. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

fantastic list of jams and great post, miner. thanks for these gems.

  15. MiA Says:

’96 they didnt play a show stateside really until August.

    I was jonesing by then.

  16. MiA Says:

Thus why Red Rocks was so difficult

  17. ren Says:

    Picturesque snowy morning in Manhattan.

    Thanks for the tunes Miner!

  18. Luther T. Justice Says:

The 96 summer tour was rowdy. Had a wook girl offer herself to me for a ticket at Deer Creek. Those were the days…

  19. xpun Says:

Just had a nice conversation w myself on the last post. Couldn’t figure out why no one else was awake.

  20. Guyute711 Says:

Is this the greatest Lifeboy of all time? It could be.

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

dang it. the corporate overlords are on to my uploadin’ ways. I guess it’ll be tonight when I put up the big treat I put together then…

  22. Tweezer Says:

Great pics Miner. 96 is often forgotten. I love 12/4 set II. This set remains pretty under valued. Has the funky feel of fall 97.

  23. xpun Says:

Did trey have the minikit in fall 96 or when was that? I know summer had the acoustic setup. When did he have the keys? Fall 99 to cypress or was it beyond that?

  24. Dorn76 Says: is down

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says: is down

I feel like someone comes on here every morning now and says this.

    /not down for me
