TTFF: 1996—The Transitional Year

8.4.96 Red Rocks

8.4.96 Red Rocks

Inspired by some recent banter in the Twittersphere…

Wilson > Disease” 8.14 I, Hershey, PA

Right off the bat in Hershey, the band dropped this opening sequence

Mike’s > Lifeboy” 8.13 II, Noblesville, IN

An adventurous mid-’90s “Mike’s” in the yet-to-be developed Cornfields of Deer Creek.

Tweezer” 8.14 II, Hershey, PA

Legend has always said it that this Herhsey show before The Clifford Ball wasn’t so hot. I never understood that assessment. Here’s another reason why.

Mike’s Song” 10.29 II, Tallahassee, FL

A percussion-drenched “Houses in Motion” jam laces the latter part of this jam in the final show before their seminal “Remain In Light” Halloween set.

The Great Curve” 10.31 II, Atlanta, GA

Speaking of “Remain in Light,” I saw this Tweet yesterday and I immediately agreed.

If you’re not familiar…

Crosseyed > Antelope” 11.2 II, West Palm Beach, FL

The band began to shape-shift on the first night after Halloween as Karl Perazzo stayed on tour for a few.

Tweezer” 11.11 II Grand Rapids, MI

A post-Halloween signpost on the long road to Cow Funk.

2001 > Llama” 12.6 I, Las Vegas, NV

One of the early, jammed-out versions from the final night of tour.

Tweezer” 12.1 II, Los Angeles, CA

Three “Tweezers” on Friday? I dig it. This is a monster from the tail end of Fall Tour.

Slave to the Traffic Light” 8.17 II, Plattsburgh, NY

An all-time classic.

Great points about CBS Sunday Morning News, T3.

I HAVE been known to overreact.

But, I have never been known to watch CBS Sunday Morning news.

  2. MiA Says:

In the hitchhikers guide to the universe, the first page says “Don’t Panic”

  3. BNCB Says:

No spoilers. Mine about to start.

  4. joe Says:

I miss charles Karault (sp) and his secret family. Who knew he was up to all of that?

Re: end is near rumors. I think our good host was trolling

  5. Tela's_muff Says:

Nice positive piece. Enjoyed that. Good for Trey!

  6. BNCB Says:

Silly. Smoke more. Relax. He was talking about the criticism from 20+ years ago.

  7. jtran Says:

What time is this show supposed to be on? Cbs here showing face the nation then college bball

  8. Tela's_muff Says:

Looks like I’ll have to miss those Gorge>Tahoe shows because of work. That hurts. Only Chicago and Dicks for me. Leaves more room for Fall Tour.

  9. BNCB Says:

    Jtran. U just missed it.

  10. SillyWilly Says:

Zoloft wears off as the day goes on…

    worries in the evening.

    my bad.

  11. MiA Says:

    Hats off to Trey’s publicist…

Trey “I’m going on CBS and telling the world I can’t write more Phish songs”
Trey’s Publicist “No you’re not. You don’t make these decisions anymore.”
    Trey “OK”

  12. MiA Says:

If you haven’t been put on a “performance review” process at work, you weren’t seeing enough Phish.

  13. BNCB Says:

6 days a week for 4 years is about 5 days a week and 3 years too long to spend on a musical IMO.

  14. MiA Says:

CocaineInvesting in Broadway is God’s way of saying you have too much money. To paraphrase Richard Pryor.

  15. BNCB Says:

Phish $$$ paying for broadway. Broadway gets 6 days a week. Family and Phish split the 7th day.

That’s what I’ve been thinking. Not saying if I think it’s good or bad. Just saying what I think things are like.

  16. MiA Says:

G$$$ I think your email has been hacked. Getting weird links.

  17. gavinsdad Says:

West Coast pretty much not in cards. Im blocked out for family Aug 3-10. If possible Chicago if it’s in July and Dicks if it’s labor day. Then maybe one more local style.

Damn the Gorge is so nice tho.

  18. plord Says:

@Gdad, ugh, norovirus no fun at all. Nothing to add but sympathy.

@Dorn, It’s been 20 years, but my memory of Park City is that the town is TINY, like one street, 5 blocks at the most. At one end is a hotel with a chair lift in the lobby; straight from shower to slope. Plush but $$$$. At the other end of the street, same side, was a fantastic and small sushi joint, if you can get a table it’s a winner all around. Hanging on the wall are personalized chopstick sets for the celebs who dine their during Sundance, so you can psychoanalyze the wood type, length, taper, and decoration choices of the stars. Mid-block, opposite side of the street, there was a brewpub with live music, also a fine establishment. It’s kind of hard to go wrong.

The mountain is ridiculously gigantor, it just keeps going and going. Bigger than Squaw Valley which is the only place I’ve been that is close. Runs are graded West Coast ++, i.e. greens are blues and that single diamond probably has a 200 yard narrow flat traverse straight across the ridge line; one false move and you are neck deep in the cliffside fluff with your board/skis buried beneath you. So gauge accordingly, especially late in the day. I went for a black diamond when I was probably too tired and that’s how I blew out my first shoulder.

All in all though, IMHO Park City is about as good as it gets for skiing on this continent.

  19. BNCB Says:

They’re just crushing it with this 30th anniversary celebration.

  20. MiA Says:

    Now with 1/30th less Possum’s and Sample’s.

  21. avila Says:

@gdad – here is to a smooth recovery. Nothing worse than watching your kids suffer. Nothing better than seeing them turn the corner while ingesting anything they want because they are so hungry and dehydrated.

  22. sumodie Says:

Rumor has it Tory plays Possum every show this year to celebrate their 30th

  23. Mr. Palmer Says:

gdad- bummer about the kiddo. Wife and kids are down by you visiting family. Spent the night. Looks like my 3 year old caught the evil virus last night as well. Bumming. I have to go to work, so my wife has to deal solo… bless that woman..

  24. Dorn76 Says:

Thanks Plord! Airplane free wifi kinda a nice deal, catching up on my bb and news (same thing really). Will he splitting some time between Park City and Canyons, oh and working. Looking forward to hitting up some beer bars to get me off an almost exclusive New England brewers diet of late.

The 2nd Wall Street movie is awful.

Gonna check out Trey in a few, big ginger showman that he is.

Continue to enjoy your time shortened Sunday!

  25. tela'smuff Says:

@T3 – i forgot the Jazzfest Bowie was pretty much a Caravan jam. hot little version worth a spin.
