Reader’s Picks: Garret Conour

12.28.12 (Graham Lucas)

12.28.12 (Graham Lucas)

I’m running with a new concept today–the reader playlist. Phish Thoughts reader Garret Conour (@garretc) proposed the idea and today has provided the inaugural installment of “Reader’s Picks.” Garret devised the playlist and wrote the words you see below, I just assembled the post. Please email mrminer@phishthoughts.com if you’d like to put one of these 10-packs together. Thanks, Garret! Enjoy!

*****

Given that I tend towards the darker underbelly of Phish jamming styles, it didn’t take much conscious effort to put together these particular ten jams, but upon completion I decided it would fit in nicely with the annual pre-dates aggression and despondency that always permeates the comments section around this time. Spring is starting to peek around the corner, but this is probably better suited for those of you still stuck indoors.

Simple” 12.9.97 II, State College, PA

From a fall ’97 show on campus at Penn State, this Simple forgoes the year’s trademark cowfunk jam for a steady progression from standard “Simple” jam out into uncharted ambient seas before a “Bowie” head-fake on the way to “Timber.”

Halley’s Comet”  11.11.98 II, Grand Rapids, MI

The Van Andel “Halley’s” is like so many of the best Phish jams: akin to a floating, swirling orb of musical energy that the band manipulates with ease. Just don’t go in expecting smooth ’98 ambiance, because that’s not what you’re gonna get.

Down With Disease” 12.12.95 II, Providence, RI

Centerpiece jam of the Providence stop in the legendary final month of 1995, this “Disease” sounds, well, like 1995 Phish, with all the percussive mind-fuckery that would lead you to believe.

“Chalk Dust Torture” 8.3.03 I, Limestone, ME

With not one but two jammed out “Chalk Dusts” this year, might as well give a listen to one of the, if not the only, non-Camden noteworthy “CDTs,” from set one of IT day two.

Tweezer” 12.30.94 II, MSG, NY

After yet another stellar MSG “Tweezer” during this past new years run, this here is a gem from Phish’s first trip to the round room. Make sure your chair can be hid under, because Troy is trying to break you.

 ***

Rock & Roll” 8.5.11 II, George, WA

This should need no introduction, you’ve all been paying attention lately. The best jam I’ve ever been in the building for (Yeah, yeah, 3.0 kid and all that), this is also unarguably the most fully realized storage-style jam the band has kicked down outside of the box that lent its name to the style. Aliens visiting the eastern Washington desert.

***

David Bowie” 6.29.95 II, Wantagh, NY

A fierce “Bowie” from a summer full of ’em, this particular “David” starts with an extended soundscape intro (remember those?) before getting into everybody’s favorite dark, shreddy, heavy ’95 style.

Gotta Jibboo” 7.4.00 II, Camden, NJ

Don’t worry, Mike changes the bass line after, oh… 15 minutes. But yeah, an extended trip out into spacey ’00 loop jams anchored by Gordo’s “Variations on the Theme from Jibboo” personal dance party. Happy birthday, America.

“You Enjoy Myself” 5.5.93 II, Albany, NY

Not your grandpappy’s “YEM,” the vocal jamming starts early, before the instrument jamming stops, as high speed ’93 turbo jazz-rock alternately dissolves and peaks through the course of the 33 minute run time. And there’s no proper vocal jam, so it’s safe for haters of that.

A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” 6.19.04, Saratoga Springs, NY

Phish waging sonic warfare with the Norse gods at their (second) last stand. Bring back the “ASIHTOS” jamming, preferably at the Gorge. Or whatever other shows I’m at this summer.

  1. snow Says:

so Mr C, can you just start booking family vacation earlier? because phish obviously waits for you to book your summer family vacation to drop dates.

  2. Bob Dylan Says:

    Nvm I google found it

  3. snow Says:

    Bob:
    Here is your link

  4. MrCompletely Says:

Anyway I don’t need to worry about the Greek for a bit because apparently I go there once a decade or so (89, 99, 2010)…if phish plays there again in 2020 I’ll be there I guess

    PEACE

  5. IrieWalton Says:

Yup, tickets are still to be had on ticketswest.com

Plus, now they (I think) have updated it to read MMW + Guests, which goes back to my original theory that Trey has a day off between PDX and the SF shows.

Things that make you go, “Oh, that would be disgusting”.

  6. Bob dylan Says:

I can’t wait to see the shirts that come from hands on a hard body. Really lends itself to great jokes.

My lady got me some new screens for my bday. Might make some myself.

  7. xpun Says:

    Thanks for the date Phan.

MPP only def for me. The tour from Chicago through BGCA is dreamy. Would love to do BGCA again, or Chicago as well as dicks. Will have to see how $$ and life plays out. Nice southern fall tour sounds alright by this VA kid.

  8. ElJefe Says:

Irie- Mmw’s show in ‘Sea’ is an acoustic one. PDX also?

  9. ElJefe Says:

Does anyone know Moshka? Seeing them here at a place called Nectar w Skerik and Peter Affelbaum and Jen Harswick… The guy selling the tix was REALLY pushing the fact that Trey might play cause they will be in town doing rehearsals. I was going bc Skerik was playing but that would be a bonus…

  10. kayatosh Says:

    I highly recommend acoustic MMW.

good to see you here, C.

  11. xpun Says:

What’s the capacity at charter one?

  12. dusty Says:

Ah the days of regular MMW. Loose danceable grooves. I do miss it but it will never be back. Even non-acoustic shows are pretty much sitters nowadays. John on the grand is wonderful, not to mention Billy on the hubcaps. I’m actually considering the reno show which just seems off for that town to be honest. Here’s to Trey sitting in for PDX, I doubt it though.

  13. phlorida phan Says:

    7,500 says wiki xpun,

  14. SpoxBrain Says:

BK Halloween!….whos ready for fall dates??? I guess CK5s comment rings true. Lots of surprises. Short summer and no fest. Also no real drivable coherent tour. Sadly, gone are they days of multi-show driving runs. West coast is drivable but loooong trek from Gorge south… Phish wants you to fly in to the show now. Surprise!?!

  15. MiA Says:

I knew Ackbar was Completely. Finally.

  16. SpoxBrain Says:

    HUUUUGE 30th so far…what a joke.

  17. ElJefe Says:

East coast is drivable…if you skip Toronto

  18. poop goblin Says:

Last long drive I did was summer 97

    Phoenix 1 show
    Ventura 1 show
    Shoreline 1 show
    Gorge 2 shows

Not exactly driving friendly but doable

  19. SpoxBrain Says:

10hrs from MPP to ATL??? Throw a NC date between to at least make it reasonable

  20. MmmHmm Says:

Poop thats a hike man. I would love to have a surf at C-street in Ventura and get out of the water to go catch a Phish show. California sounds ideal aside from the rat-race/traffic/smog/mexican issues.

  21. bouncin fan Says:

I did almost every show 96 summer and fall in my shitty sunbird

does piss me off kids can’t drive the country catching shows anymore. that was half the fuckin fun.

the troopers are fuckin brutal though also these days and search and seizure rights have gotten trampled on.

but ya the fly to or local show only model is killing a great thing.

  22. MmmHmm Says:

yeah @bouncin for an East Coaster, I would like to do Gorge again and Dicks but two western flights in a month is hefty. ATL and MPP don’t interest me at all. MPP is a cop warzone in a terrible venue and ATL is Tues/Weds in the ‘burbs…probably why they did the weekday shows at the smaller venue and not the larger Lakewood (which sold out last year).

  23. bouncin fan Says:

    yo Kaya

I need my room back for SF that had the window that opens so you can get on the balcony.

can’t remember the fuckin # though. want to ask for it.

  24. guitarpicker420! Says:

According to hidden track, Charter One is a ? as far as capacity. Apparently they are doing renovations right now which may increase size.

  25. bouncin fan Says:

    ya MmmmHmmm

weekday shows are tough. of the 80 I caught in 3.0 almost all have been weekends I think.

and MPP does suck. my dumb wook ass worked a bunch of mawl there at a TAB show back in the day. lucky I made it out not in cuffs.
