Bathtub Gin” 6.28.00 II, Holmdel, NJ

From a consistency standpoint, 2000 might just be the best year for “Bathtub Gin.” Here’s my pick for the best one of the summer. Straight fire all throughout.

Cities” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

What would a @DryIceFactory playlist be without – what I would consider – the best version of “Cities” ever played? Bumping summer groove session gives way to supersonic Trey-shred. Must hear Phish from top to bottom.

Sand” 6.11.11 I, Columbia, MD

Everyone loves to talk about the Portsmouth “Sand,” but does anyone else remember the Merriwether 1st setter that took place a week before? Trey absolutely attacks the Ocedoc in this version, masterfully creates some fierce tension and brings the jam to a head before moving into the ending. The highlight of a banging 1st set in an otherwise disappointing weekend in the Mid-Atlantic.

***

Tweezer” 8.1.98 II, East Troy, WI

Musical perfection, a must-hear highlight from Alpine ’98.

David Bowie” 11.26.94 II, Minneapolis, MN

The Minneapolis “Bowie” absolutely, 100% set the blueprint for what took place in Providence one month later. You won’t convince me otherwise.

Light” 10.26.10 II, Manchester, NH

Sometimes I feel like the only people who appreciate this show were the ones who were there. Phish absolutely clobbered a rather rowdy week-night crowd at Verizon Wireless Arena on a Tuesday in New Hampshire. This “Light” (complete with an Alumni Reprise jam) really hit the spot, and might not even be the highlight of the show for many.

***

Twist” 2.24.03 II

“Twist” is a jam that can go, literally, anywhere. This one takes a slow and steady course to Saturn.

 ***

Piper -> What’s The Use?” 9.11.00 II

Why not pair a scary “Twist,” with a scary Piper? The highlight of a great show at Great Woods.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Piper-_.mp3,http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Whats-The-Use_-_.mp3]

 ***

Harry Hood” 9.11.99 II, George, WA

Phish slams the door shut on yet another fantastic set at The Gorge. The crowd roars in approval from the composed section all the way to the final peak. This “Hood” is a personal favorite and is underrated, must-hear Phish.

YEM -> Manteca -> YEM” 12.31.10 II, MSG, NYC

What’s better than a “YEM” paired with “Manteca” antics?

    Eremergerd erm ferst

  2. willowed Says:

Round trip to Denver on Labor Day out of Hartford, CT.

    $286.00

    See you boys at Dicks!

  3. BooVT Says:

Sparx, sorry for the late reply, I’m just reading back now. I’m SHS class of ’86. UVM class of ’90. I’d be very surprised if we don’t know each other. Spent yesterday at a funeral at St Monica’s, and then with a bunch of SHS 86 alumni at the Hilltop afterwards. Small world.

DIF, I was at the Manchester show, and loved it. We sold an extra ticket to a guy out front 10 minutes before showtime, and I often wonder if it was a fellow BB’er. Never introduced ourselves, but stood together about 3 rows off the floor next to Page… Great night.

  4. Sumodie Says:

Another puff piece on trey in the WSJ:

“I’m looking forward to playing live music again,” Anastasio says with mock fatigue, anticipating his band’s summer tour that starts in Maine in July. “It’s so much easier.”

  5. guitarpicker420! Says:

Thanks for the great play list!

Another request for a few more players for the Black Board Phantasy Baseball League. We’ve got 7 teams so far, a couple more will fill it up. We’ve got several returning teams and several new ones. If you want in, email me at guitarpicker420 at Y@hoo dot com It’s free!

  6. Luther T. Justice Says:

Thanks for article link Sumo! At first I was slightly annoyed by the musical, but after all of these interviews, I think it will be a positive for Phish. Trey seems to be in a good place. Hopefully that good place will lead to good things for us as well…

  7. jdub Says:

What if Trey rehearsed for Phish tour as much as he did for HOAH?

It was probably a good thing he’s been obsessing over something other than Phish. Might propell some interesting dynamics this summer and fall.

  8. Luther T. Justice Says:

I can still feel Mike’s bass from that Columbus Cities after all of these years. Sadly, that venue is now abandoned property where teens go to do bad things.

  9. Luther T. Justice Says:

That’s what I’m hoping for jdub. Musicals can get the Summer of ’89 type stuff, we’ll take the type 2 stuff. Seems like it’ll work for all of us.

  10. jdub Says:

Tory has been busy. Musicals, solo tours, and a solo album to distract. After his west coast TAB tour, Phish gets his undivided musical attention for the remainder of the year. Been a while since that has happened I bet.

  11. BingosBrother Says:

I’ll sign up after work gp.

Hopefully trey got the contained music out of his system and we reap the nenefits. Nice to know that he’s aware of what us 1%ers want.

  12. MiA Says:

I actually kinda think that now that HOAHB is on and running, it’s like that bird has flown.

Now he can focus on his next obsession. A 20 minute Halley’s.

  13. MiA Says:

    Great choices DIF.

PS, I 100% agree with DIF’s statement on the Orpheum Bowie. I like it more than the Providence one. Helped that I was there, but the pumping groove that they produce is fantastic.

Love the multiple endings on the Gorge Hood. That whole set is stellar.

  14. DryIceFactory Says:

Thanks for throwing this up Miner, not really anything “under the radar” but definitely some of my top versions of their respective songs. Almost swapped out that Piper for 7/6/98 – which I’ve been listening to on the regular since it hit spotify.

  15. DryIceFactory Says:

And yes, that Gorge ’99 II is ridiculous top to bottom. You know it’s a good set when the “gasp for air” selection (Caspian) absolutely crushes.

  16. btb Says:

dark in the daytime…forgot about the Cbus Cities Jam. woah

  17. DryIceFactory Says:

    Side Tangent Here:

Cities has brought me so much joy over the years. When writting that, I dont know why I said Cbus was the best version, on any day it could change. I mean, Deer Creek ’97, Amsterdam ’97, Greek ’10, Bowie->Cities->Bowie – that tune has made it into so many huge moments. If you made a volume chart of “number of times song has produced a top tier highlight divided by number of times song has been played”, I bet Cities comes up with one of the top 10 highest ratios.

  18. gavinsdad Says:

Bowie Cities Bowie just has a grip on me.

Nice job DIF…always love to hear from the “studious” among us.

  19. dyda Says:

‘sometimes i feel like the only people who appreciate this show were the ones who were there’

i know, right? it’s a special one to me cause it was on my birthday & my 50th show & was the band’s 1500th. after midnight bustout show opener? yeah, we knew it was on from the start

  20. plord Says:

I will never be convinced that Manchester was anything but crushingly awesome. I could still wish for a couple more bars of smooth transition into the Mango at the end but that’s a quibble.

I love the Mike-led churning funk in that Light.

  21. bob dylan Says:

Email in my inbox from delta. LGA > Denver – $129. Said to myself well I guess that settles it.

Offer period ends June 9. Doh! Back to the drawing boards.

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

They don’t call it Jamchester for nothing
    Nice list, DIF!

  23. BingosBrother Says:

    Greek Cities!

  24. ren Says:

    Happy Friday E’rebody!!!

Looks like Mrs. Ren and I are going to be hitting Dicks up sans crew! Will definitely free us up to make some new connections with as many of you as possible! Couple questions:

-will heads be getting there any earlier than Friday?
-how important is it that we secure GA Floors? Are there separate entrances…could I make some fake floor stubs if need be and use some jedi tricks?

  25. btb Says:

I’m in a wedding Labor Day wknd…buddy was bullied by his girl into the “everyone can make it b/c of the holiday” bullshit. Unreal.

Holiday weddings are the worst. This is well known right?

I was really looking forward to Dick’s again. sux
