Bathtub Gin” 6.28.00 II, Holmdel, NJ

From a consistency standpoint, 2000 might just be the best year for “Bathtub Gin.” Here’s my pick for the best one of the summer. Straight fire all throughout.

Cities” 7.31.98 II, Columbus, OH

What would a @DryIceFactory playlist be without – what I would consider – the best version of “Cities” ever played? Bumping summer groove session gives way to supersonic Trey-shred. Must hear Phish from top to bottom.

Sand” 6.11.11 I, Columbia, MD

Everyone loves to talk about the Portsmouth “Sand,” but does anyone else remember the Merriwether 1st setter that took place a week before? Trey absolutely attacks the Ocedoc in this version, masterfully creates some fierce tension and brings the jam to a head before moving into the ending. The highlight of a banging 1st set in an otherwise disappointing weekend in the Mid-Atlantic.

Tweezer” 8.1.98 II, East Troy, WI

Musical perfection, a must-hear highlight from Alpine ’98.

David Bowie” 11.26.94 II, Minneapolis, MN

The Minneapolis “Bowie” absolutely, 100% set the blueprint for what took place in Providence one month later. You won’t convince me otherwise.

Light” 10.26.10 II, Manchester, NH

Sometimes I feel like the only people who appreciate this show were the ones who were there. Phish absolutely clobbered a rather rowdy week-night crowd at Verizon Wireless Arena on a Tuesday in New Hampshire. This “Light” (complete with an Alumni Reprise jam) really hit the spot, and might not even be the highlight of the show for many.

***

Twist” 2.24.03 II

“Twist” is a jam that can go, literally, anywhere. This one takes a slow and steady course to Saturn.

Piper -> What’s The Use?” 9.11.00 II

Why not pair a scary “Twist,” with a scary Piper? The highlight of a great show at Great Woods.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Piper-_.mp3,http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Whats-The-Use_-_.mp3]

 ***

Harry Hood” 9.11.99 II, George, WA

Phish slams the door shut on yet another fantastic set at The Gorge. The crowd roars in approval from the composed section all the way to the final peak. This “Hood” is a personal favorite and is underrated, must-hear Phish.

YEM -> Manteca -> YEM” 12.31.10 II, MSG, NYC

What’s better than a “YEM” paired with “Manteca” antics?

re: the gin posted… wow. apt example of “staight fire” if ever there was one… you can almost hear page’s fingers about to fall off about 3/4 through the song. nicely done sir.

  2. dorn76 Says:

Sweet list. Good Friday, home with sick kid playlist.

Posted a pamp of the SBIX soundcheck on wrong thread. Something special about those festi checks.

  3. Michael Kang Says:

Miner- (from the previous comments), yeah I think Tahoe and BGCA are the only ones you need to PTBM…that’s all I did, but then again that’s all I may be going to (that, and 3 for each was almost $1K). If I do any others this Summer it’ll be Gorge, Bowl, Dick’s and maybe a one off somewhere (might sneak away away for one of the SPAC or CHI shows), but all of that’s very unlikely right now. But who knows.

And if we’re shut out of Tahoe, I’m going up there anyway. Plenty of woods to hide in and hear fine. Not to mention edgewood, hotels, boats, parking garages etc…

  4. voopa Says:

(really gotta stop using that alias and forgetting to change back ^^)

Hell, we heard the Tahoe soundcheck just fine from our campground, over 10 mi. away.

  5. Calpain Says:

nice follow-up @DIF. interesting pick with the MPP Sand, a sleep for sure.

Luther’s mention of Polaris’ demise reminded me about this little photo project of the now defunct venue. a peek at the “transience of creative space” and where kids go to go bad stuff

  6. btb Says:

    Polaris was a nice venue.

Too small for the “country megaticket” probably.

  7. Calpain Says:

err…to do bad stuff. and mpp sand IS a sleeper. This IT 46 Days is messing with my brain.

  8. tela's_muff Says:

That’s my favorite Cities @dif. Good picks.

“I’m looking forward to playing live music again,” Anastasio says with mock fatigue, anticipating his band’s summer tour that starts in Maine in July. “It’s so much easier.”

  11. DryIceFactory Says:

    @Manchester

I had missed the whole fall tour up to that point. In fact, I took the GMAT the night UMass1. I had planned to hit AC1 and 2 as my whole fall. Tuesday afternoon hits, the itch hits. I can no longer wait til Friday to see them. So I grab a ticket on stubhub, bomb out of work early, and drive up alone and end up alone for set 1, I’m 3 rows back sidestage, legit 30 feet from Fishman. Some kids puff me down for the set, and I literally dont think I stopped dancing once.

Met up with my crew at set break, and had an absolute blast. All of us consider it the best show of that tour on replay.

After Midnight opener was funny, because my friends uncle came who hadnt seen them since 95 and apparently had said before the set started, “the last concert I saw at this venue was Eric Clapton”.

  12. BingosBrother Says:

    Dose her btb.

  13. DryIceFactory Says:

His after show comment “well they sure didn’t ease me in”

  14. MiA Says:

@bob, I had that e-mail too. $119 each way from JFK I think. Total of $238 RT.

Went to Kayak but looked for LGA to DEN for Thurs to Tues and saw a $253 RT ticket.

  15. dorn76 Says:

First request in: Bangor, JB, Chicago.

My luck I’ll get shut out of Bangor, Chi and score nosebleeds at JB. Such is life.

  16. ren Says:

Sorry to pester…just trying tap some BB knowledge….but whats the best way to go about tix for Dicks?

  17. MiA Says:

I am expecting 0/8 in my requests, or maybe worse, 1 show of each run. So I will need to scramble for the others. The BB Provides though. Gotta remember that.

I haven’t updated the spreadsheet yet, but we should probably all be trying to get BGCA and Tahoe? I am sure any extras will be gobbled up.

Although I like AJ’s “statements” about Chicago tickets, please do go for them. Because the good people of the BB will likely pass them on to other BB’ers.

  18. MiA Says:

Put in for ground floor Ren for sure. I am sure you will be able to get face from other BB’ers that will pull a G$$$ at the last minute.

  19. vegas wolfmans Says:

Ren- You want to be on the floor. They had mostly senior citizens checking bands to go from stands>floor. It looked entirely possible to sneak, but for peace of mind, just get floor tix. I snatched mine on a rerelease a month before the show. Even with all the hype now surrounding Dicks, it still shouldn’t be a tough ticket IMO.

  20. gavinsdad Says:

honestly love the orpheum bowie and prov bowie with prov taking top slot by just a hair for me..the orpheum has really nice phases. that vac section and the rebuild are highly unique. both monsters.

  21. Fly Says:

    Happy Friday, BB. Dissertation submitted!

Manchester was sublime. Fierce, poignant. Hot young blonde on my arm, her first show. Penthouse suite across from the venue with requisite accoutrements. Awesome.

6.11.11 first set was fire. Then Birds>Tweezer…>Horse. Fuck you Trey! I threw my hat on the ground, screamed FUCK YOU TREY and sat down in protest. So many great first sets in that little run, so many Horse’d and Jukebox’d second sets. Odd.

  22. MiA Says:

I see $252 RT from Austin. Funny it’s $1 cheaper to fly from LGA to DEN than from Austin.

  23. MiA Says:

    Congrats Fly!

  24. gavinsdad Says:

curious about this 03 Twist. I actually went to this show and i generally slag it but i’ve never given it focus.

    starving. tacos for lunch.

  25. ren Says:

Thanks MiA!…..starting to get excited now!!!…almost too excited for something I haven’t completely nailed down yet. Don’t really see any obstacles though.

Might piss of a friend or 2 with Phish stuff here and there….just need to make sure to add some new ones along the way 😉
