“This One Goes to Eleven—My First Eleven Shows” by Ryan Baird

Ghost > Halley’s > Tweezer” 11.24.98 II, New Haven, CT

After being shut out at my first phish show 4/4/98, getting arrested days before the Lemonwheel, and missing the first set of this show due to traffic on I-95, I was not off to a good start to my phish show career. This second set trifecta was just what I needed to be hooked for life.

Gumbo” 11.28.98 I, Worcester, MA

For the first night of the tour finale [the night before] I found myself in a familiar place, on the outside looking in. Things were not looking good for this noob, but once again, these first notes I heard [on night two] reaffirmed that I was in the right place.

Bathtub Gin” 11.29.98 II, Worcester, MA

$$$, I got IT for the first time.

Foreplay/Longtime” 7.12.99 I, Mansfield, MA

I was beginning to understand that Phish could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted, with a bit of humor, and completely nail it. This was my first outdoor show, I was front row, and the place exploded for this one.

Tube > Boogie On” 7.17.99 I, Volney, NY

My first festi of any type, and I was in way over my head. Completely broke after about five minutes of being on lot, but happy as I could ever be. There’s nothing that compares to the vibe of a Phish festival, and this opening sequence set the tone for the weekend.

Runaway Jim” 7.18.99 II, Volney, NY

“It was so hot!” was the understatement of the year. I can remember the start of this set, and thinking that I can’t believe that they’re going to play another set after this one. Festivals are sometimes overwhelming and after my first one, I was happy to have made it out alive.

Walk Away > Rocky Top” 12.7.99 E, Portland, ME

I honestly do not remember seeing the CCCC “Halley’s.” This might be one of the best jams that I was in attendance for but have no recollection of. And since it gets so much love around here, I don’t need to restate the obvious. However, I do remember the encore, which I thought was bitchin’!

The Lizards” 12.8.99 II, Portland, ME

After hearing Trey’s thesis and listening to Great Woods ’94 a few times that fall, I had greater appreciation for the epic tale. This was my first real trip to Gamehenge that I can remember to this day. I think that Trey’s solo might be my favorite piece of composed phish.

Sand” 12.13.99 II, Providence, RI

After hearing it for the first time live a week earlier in Portland, I was hooked. “Sand” has remained my favorite song since December of 1999. This version is pure fire, and foreshadowed what was to happen at my next show/festi.

Light Up or Leave Me Alone” 12.30.99 I, Big Cypress, FL

“Water in the Sky” got everyone’s attention and “Light Up” set the place on fire. This special event needs the Shapiro treatment, asap. The swamp is one of my most cherished memories, every aspect, especially the amount of music they packed into two days.

After Midnight Reprise” 12.31.99 II, Big Cypress, FL

The birth of my children, getting married to an amazing woman, and “After Midnight.” There are special moments in life, but as far as Phish goes this one can’t be beat. The vibe circulating within my friends, the crowd, everyone in the Everglades was pure bliss. Phish was sending a clear message, and I was pickin’ up what they were puttin’ down!

WTF. How is it they can’t find one person. Every cop in Mass. is there along with the military.
What happens if cops are needed somewhere else tonight? This seems to be just a kid that was doing what his older brother told him to do. Can’t be that hard to find him. And if he is holding someone hostage, that person should just kick this little punks ass. Just frustrating to me and I’m nowhere near Boston. Keep your head up guys and be safe.

GnRoses also got away from me. That’s an amazing first, Jdub. With limo from the folks!

  4. bobby weird Says:

thats why i think he’s dead phishm.

  5. phishm Says:

I guess I tend to agree with you bw other then the fact that if he died from blood loss wouldn’t there be a trail? It almost seems they have too many decision makers on the ground and everyone is just sitting around. I’m sure they know what they are doing, but what I’m sure of isn’t necessarily right.

  6. sumodie Says:

Crazy….NPR just read a tweet from the dead older brother that quoted GnRoses’ Paradise City

  7. sumodie Says:

Goat has a new single, Dreambuilding, coming out for Record Day

I believe it streams here (not on my ipad tho):

  8. phishm Says:

On a different note, anyone ever tried Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale? Good stuff. Time to go into phish mode. You all have a good night. Peace.

My heart and my families heart goes out to Beantowners this evening. Shit ain’t right in this world.

GnR was actually my 2nd concert. My first:

As a 7 YO my mom and dad took me and my 3 siblings to see a band called Wasted open for Iron Maiden at the Worcester Centrum. The lead singer of Wasted was/is a close family friend. we had floor seats, showed up with yellow raincoats – like ducklings, and went back stage after Wasted’s set. ’80s Glam rock shit. Saw some kind of floating pig or something and lots of noise as we left and poked our head in on the Iron Maiden set

  10. sumodie Says:

Free MMW show tomorrow at 2pm, Davis CA

  11. MiA Says:

The overtime has to be phenomenal for those cops. They probably found him 8 hours ago in a basement, but … well … they’ll just let 300 more cops get 1.5x if they can…

    Cops aren’t questionable characters…

    Fuck the police.

  12. phishm Says:

Don’t beat around the bush. Tell us how you really feel.
And everyone will be suprised next year when they have to lay off half the police force when there is no money in the budget. Amazing what media scrutiny can do to decision makers. Fucking robots. OK now done with this story for the night. Tired of MSNBC interviewing these so called experts that don’t agree on anything. If they were experts then I would think there would be something common to their babble. Too much news is some shit I don’t like. SPAC 2004 again. This time night one. From the top. Peace.

  13. bobby weird Says:

    shootout in Watertown right now!!!

  14. bobby weird Says:

cops dead here last night and in shootout right now.. really mia. save it.

  15. bobby weird Says:

he was hiding in a boat, apparently boat on fire. suspect probably dead. Lots of shots.

  16. voopa Says:

Sumo- I also heard NPR quote his tweet after the attacks, “Ain’t no love in the heart of the city”, which is a Bobby Bland song, but loser probably only knows it via Jay-Z.

  17. tela'smuff Says:

this is when i wished superheros were real. The Flash or Superman would have this shit done in the time it takes me to pinch off a terd. this is an insane amount of law enforcement for what is most likely an alone 19 yr old with a handgun. but i get it, and i get bobby’s feeling on it.

  18. bobby weird Says:

police telling reporters, get ready to report something solid.

  19. tela'smuff Says:

they killed him. bet. just need to confirm he isn’t strapped with bombs

  20. bobby weird Says:

fire suggests suspect 2 was also wearing explosive suicide vest when he was shot… pretty dangerous imo.

  21. voopa Says:

I have a crazy story about when I saw the Stones and GNR…for another time.

mrs. v broke the bong stumbling around in the dark earlier, dammit. At least we have a mediocre spare.

Gonna try to catch that Davis MMW show tomorrow afternoon, between bong part shopping and heading to TAB…probably should be seeing their show tomorrow night, but it came together differently.

  22. phishm Says:

Too bad he’s probably dead. From the look of him from the pictures released he would definately talk. Looked like a total follower IMHO. I just find it hard to believe that these 2 morons were working alone. Hope they find something in the apartment. At least from their actions over the past 2 days they were not very good at keeping a low profile.

  23. tela'smuff Says:

at the end of the day, they blocked off 20 blocks, locked it down. sent in every available resource they had. 1 day of inconvenience for the city to catch and kill two fucktards that killed and maimed innocent people and shook a nation for a week. seems to be a pretty impressive job by law enforcement in my opinion.

  24. phlorida phan Says:

Need to arrest kids father also, quoted saying all hell would break loose if his son was killed

  25. bobby weird Says:

and suffered one casualty in the process, with another in critical condition (both from last night). Incredible if you ask me. Lots os places to hide in a city of 2 million; somehow they knew basically where he was. hats off. condolences.
