2001 > Bowie” 10.27.95 II, Kalamazoo MI

This was my first show and still to this day the best “Bowie” I have heard. When the jam starts up Trey is chanting some pretty strange stuff under his guitar work. This is a must hear for any “Bowie” fan.

Mike’s > Lifeboy > Weekapaug” 8.13.96 II, Noblesville, IN

What a night this was. Everything about this show was great. The last four songs of set one are also worth checking out, but this is by far the best “Mike’s” from the whole 96 summer tour. For the most part summer 96 seemed pretty tame, but they really let it out in this “Mike’s.”

“Theme, Punch, Ghost > Taste” 8.9.97 I, East Troy, WI

97 has so many gems, and it seemed like the bands style would change every show. The first four songs of set one was some of my favorite Phish music I have ever heard. This was my first time seeing them play “Ghost” and what a “Ghost” it was. These first four songs still seem fresh in my memory 16 years later.

Julius > Slave” 12.5.97 II, Cleveland,OH

For a 97 show this one seems to be overlooked alot, and on paper this might seem like a let down as being the heart of the second set, but this “Julius” swings harder than any Phish song I have heard them play, and then the “Slave” is out of this world.

Tweezer > Izabella” 12.6.97 II, Auburn Hills, MI

This is the best “Tweezer” ever. I’m sure just about everyone has heard this one. You really just need to listen to the whole second set.

2001 > Mike’s > Weekapug > Zero “7.17.98 II, George, WA

My friends and me did this whole summer tour and even though the tour opener in Portland was a great show, summer tour really felt like it started this night. What a magical night in the desert.

Mike’s > Simple > Bittersweet Motel” 7.21.98 II, Phoenix, AZ

This “Mike’s Song” is dark, rocking, and just out right awesome  but the best part of this show is the “Simple.” This “Simple” is just great. Trey and Pages playing is so sweet and light. This whole second set is worth listening to, but I always find myself enjoying the “Mikes > Simple” the most. I believe this was the first time they played “Bittersweet” too.

Bathtub Gin” 7.29.98 I, Maryland Heights, MO

This is the “Bathtub Gin” of all “Bathtub Gins!”

Mike’s Song” 12.30.99 III, Big Cypress, FL

From my top ten list it would seem that I really like “Mike’s Song,” and who doesn’t, but I wanted to pick only songs from shows that I was at and I also wanted to pick out songs that are forever my first thoughts when I am asked about Phish, so behold another “Mike’s Song.” I remember CK5 filling up the swamp with the most smoke I have ever seen at a Phish show and this is one dark, electric, rocking “Mike’s Song.” I am sad to say that I feel that this is one of the last true “Mike”s Songs” with a real jam.

“Moma, Light > Taste, Fluffhead, Joy, Gin> Hood. E. Slave” 8.7.09, George, WA

For my tenth pick I’m going to have to pick this whole second set. I have thought Phish has played some great shows in their new era, but maybe its’ the openness of the Gorge but to me this show has a feel that you don’t hear very much nowadays. Every song has a pop and a lightness to them. The jams do not seem forced and the “Light” and “Gin” have epic jams for 3.0 Phish. I have not been to a lot of show in the 3.0 era, but have downloaded most of the shows, and I keep finding myself listening to this show the most out of all of the 3.0 Phish. Great Phish music all around.

This was a fun project and than you Mr. Miner for the opportunity to share my memory’s with everyone.

It’s the vibe of the thing. I rest my case.

Ned writes a review for lawnmemo. I defy aw to read this shit and stay positive. Nauseating. I can’t believe these people are sitting next to me at shows.

    Never again.

not to mention the timeliness of the moronic lawnmemo post. ???? random

It was never my intention to hide behind my handle, but when your handle is as big as mine….. 😉

But seriously, I’m not all good looks and dirty jokes you know. I’ve got feelings. Feelings of an almost human nature.

Just to be a contrarian. What’s the need with the lawnmemo site? I don’t think these reviewers claim to be professionals. They are adding their viewpoint on some hot jams. Maybe a little long winded, maybe not described with in depth anaylsis and prose, but they’re just commenting on a jam. If Ned was next to me at a show, seems like he could be fun. He pays attention to the music, has passion, seems to know what’s up. What’s so awful? Some of ya get silly about other phish sites. Who cares really?

For the record, I love The Long Con. Greatest celebrity avatar ever. That includes The Admiral who is MIA.

Good evening BB. Saw I was getting some traffic from here so came to do some reading. @BingosBrother and @BobbyWeird, I would love for you to explain a bit more what you didn’t like, and what you think might be a better format. This is something brand new I am trying when I found out so many people wanted to try writing about Phish. I did it as a first come first serve sign up and had to turn away about 50 people. I did not “choose” the people who filled up each show slot. We have a mix of people that write about Phish a lot, and some trying for the first time. @Tela nailed it on the head, the main goal is just to (hopefully) get people excited for the upcoming summer tour by listening to last year. None of the new writers have claimed to be professionals but are just passionate about Phish. So again, I am always trying to improve my projects and how I move forward. Feel free to offer ideas, or let me know what you don’t like.

    Best wishes

    Where is Ren?!

Lawnmemo. First off as a fan i just want to aknowledge the work you guys have done and send some regards to mutual appreciation for the band. Also props to you for going forward on a creative project.
So critique wise, i’ve found myself losing attention away from the writing during the long breakdowns of the songs. As a musician i could use some more descriptive terms, but also see that for non muscians this does not work and instead creative descriptions help to imply or express some sense of what is happening in a song.
But coming up with creative writing to describe sound is very hard. Potentially impossible. Best to just listen for one’s self. I would maybe recomend abridging the long moment by moment breakdowns, find a few words to let people in a bit and then leave it to them to listen for themselves. There are only so many adjectives after awhile one can use to describe sound.

  15. little umbrellas Says:

    Ren’s busy making beats.
The other band is sound checking. Dustbowl Revival, kinda gypsy side southern soul sound.

  16. little umbrellas Says:

and more perhaps, now they’ve got some real country train geooves and pretty ripping Trombone, Violin and Trumpet solos.

  17. MiA Says:

Chicago is willing it in. Can’t believe they did even have a shot during that 5 on 3.

Kane stole that goal. Dont think Quick was gonna get it. Good he was there thought.

  18. MiA Says:

Lawnmemo a descriptions were hilarious. That’s a tough act to follow.

    This place got quiet.

Are folks paranoid now that the govt is monitoring this convo. Crazy story in the Wash Post, tonight, about huge, years old secret program to tap servers of google, facebook, apple, and more. Basically, everything you assumed the govt was doing has now been confirmed.

  21. Iriewalton Says:

Whole article is worth reading, but the last paragraph is the most 1984ish:

Firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities, is what drove a career intelligence officer to provide PowerPoint slides about PRISM and supporting materials to The Washington Post in order to expose what he believes to be a gross intrusion on privacy. “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type,” the officer said.

  22. MiA Says:

I read it and not sure of the veracity if it. Friend sent me something today saying the can use your phone, powered off, as a microphone in the room.

Little fear and uncertainty and death there.

  23. voopa Says:

Iw- I’m surprised at the outrage. Where was all this when FISA was going through Congress, and when those pics of mysterious secret duplicate server towers at data centers showed up online 10 years ago? Was everyone too busy demonizing Islam and/or screaming about controlled demolitions?

  24. MiA Says:

  25. MiA Says:

    Chicago deserved that game.
