Dick’s Picks 2013

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

  6. punkmug Says:

Sad news in the reggae community today. RIP Prince Jazzbo.

  7. punkmug Says:

On a positive note… Great list Miner!

Big fluffer of Say Something and would really love to see them expand that song this fall.

  8. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

dig this list! i love this ocelot. i may be in the minority, but i dig this song every time i hear it.

front range friends- stay dry. i didn’t realize the extent of the damage until reading the news last night.

today is the twentieth anny of my first dead show. i can’t believe it has been that long. not a bad show for ’93 either. 15 years old at the philly spectrum! my girl listens to a day of dead everyday (yesterday, 9/12/82- check it out- pretty good) and i told her to play 9/13/93 today. i then told her that she was 4 when i was seeing j.g. ha!

    happy friday.

  9. bhizzle Says:

Driving to work this morning I got a case of deja vu. It was the fog bank encapsulated city of Rochester from Bittersweet. A lil more than 5 weeks to go!

  10. kevin Says:

@Heady – I dig it everytime too. Cant remember which one finally hooked me, but ill take it at most runs.

  11. Kaveh Says:

    Morning BBers!

    Read this:

It seems to me, while very heart felt, that this letter is like 4 years too late. I think the Trey/band have moved so far past the past that even mentioning it seems awkward. And I get this love for the band, but telling them not to break up; that isn’t his place at all.

Overall, a weird mistimed and placed letter. #numberLined #Horsed

  12. MiA Says:

Heart felt, and thoughtless seem to go hand in hand in that “letter” to Phish.

That makes me AW level angry at “phishies” sort of crap. I wanted to stop at “We both let each other down” sentence.

Phish is doing this on their terms. 100%. We are not part of the equation other than buying tickets, and raging what they give us. I’m thankful for sure, but I have no expectations on when they start, stop or whatever. They don’t owe us a single thing.

    Rant off.

  13. punkmug Says:

Totally agree with MIA and Kaveh on the letter to Trey. I felt a little awkward reading it. Actually I’m surprised I read the whole thing. If the wheels fall off after the fall tour I’m blaming Aviv!

  14. C. Clavin Ball Says:

well well well. for a date that falls in the middle of quite a few fall tours, one would think there would be more shows on this the thirteenth day of the ninth month of the commonly used gregorian calendar. but you would be wrong. you have to go all the way back to 1990 to find a show on this day, in truth, but you would be well rewarded in doing so.

for it is perhaps a little known fact that this show contains not one, not two, but several debuts, a host of secret language cues, an extended appearance by the Dude of Life, and much of the high precision playing, antics, and high energy that made the band what they are today. so let’s dive in a bit, shall we?

Here are the debuts: Landlady, Tube, Asse Festival, Minute by Minute (yes, the Doobie Brothers tune – with fish on trombone), Buried Alive, Paul and Silas (lond misknown by many phishies as Hall and Solace or some other horrible misappropriation of the name due to bad tape inscribing), Magilla, Stash, Goin’ Down Slow, Self, Dahlia, and Revolution’s Over (with those last three being the DoL triple play special). Minute by Minute and Goin’ Down Slow would have short histories with the band, as would the Dude of Life tunes, but most of these songs would go on to become juggernauts of the rotation.

The year prior, the band supposedly played an old Providence venue called The Living Room but no setlist survives so we will just move on to the next stop on our route which happens to be a three setter at Sam’s Tavern in Burlington probably most notable for two things. One is the only known performance of Andy’s Chest. The other, and probably more important for the history of phish, is that this show includes what is thought to be the first appearance of fish on the vacuum during a late third set jam out of Sanity. So you can thank Sam for that.

  15. Stoney Case Says:

Kaveh! Stay tuned, you think that letter was odd, wait until you read the baby’s ass response!

    serious delusional tool bags:

  16. Stoney Case Says:

Haha! that’s the definition of TL;DR

anyone that got through the whole things owes me a fat pre-roll of the chronic!

  17. punkmug Says:

Hangs head in shame and starts rolling.

  18. Jerome Garcia Says:

Thank you Mr. Miner for the Dicks Picks. Friday just got exceedingly better.

Apologies for the Stealie silliness last nt. Esp to Berkeley Head. Beg your pardon sir. Hope you had loads of fun funkifying your life at Orgone last night. If you’re so inclined, would love to hear your thoughts on the show.

Lots of great Dicks above but in homeage to @BH & Orgone gonna drop a little Summer Solstice Funky Nassau. Nice warm pull taboot.

  20. Mr. Palmer Says:

    what is TL:DR?

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    a worthwhile huffpo piece

  22. Stoney Case Says:

Today’s Jamnesia assignment, courtesy of Mr. Miner on the Twitter’s:

Come for the ‘Sand’, stay for the ‘Tweezer’

Also, via our guy Fletch and as always, MIA,

the Alpine ’04 ‘Ghost>Boogie On’ or is it ‘Boogie On > Ghost’.

  23. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    “too long; didn’t read”

  24. Luther T. Justice Says:

My favorite thing I learned about the Baby’s Ass is it likes to get a pedicure & clean its car before tour. Why didn’t I ever think to do this?
