*****

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

***

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

***

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

***

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

***

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

***

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

***

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/1.08-Ocelot.mp3]

***

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

Oh yeah, Berkeley Head and Bobbie D (and any other Bay cats)

You guys got plans Sept 22?
Hunter and Amendola are playing two shows that night at Duende in Oakland.

Duende is a new Tapas restaurant slash bar that my buddy opened right across the street from the Fox Theatre. Hip place, pricey gourmet Tapas. But the thing is, dude has some music connections. John Zorn named it. He get’s cats like Hunter coming through.
Anyways, it will be a very small show and a sit down. Could be fun to catch a few drinks and some good music. Don’t spin a lot of Hunter at home, but love watching him pull that shit off. Two Brains!

Anyone coming to NYC for the MBV shows or anything else.. give a shout..

C – no doubt. Religion came up over dinner a couple weeks ago with friends whose kids are in Catholic school. I was on the verge of asking them if they knew what Zappa wrote about Catholic girls, thought better of it, and went to get another beverage. Do you know how they go…..

write letter>read letter to yourself>feel good about letter>burn letter>never talk about letter again.

  5. Jtran Says:

    @sumo

glad you and plord caught that show again, even if set was simliar. Spiritulalized one of the best live shows around IMO. Wish this tour came west.

Guess I’ll include this aswell: Bay Area Cats. If you need get down to some seriously psychedelic Ethiopian Jazz and Funk, we got a 10 piece group called Sun Hop Fat playin the Rickshaw Stop this month. Sept 20th.
We started with a lot of Mulatu Astatke and other Swinging Addis artists and have begun to incorporate original music in the style of.

    Where are they now?
Did they all take the vow?

  8. MrCompletely Says:

I’ll keep going to see Spiritualized as long as they keep touring.

Just wish Sonic could put something together.

@Palms- I don’t think get thoroughly trounced is the attention that @Aviv wanted. Calling a spade a spade is healthy for everybody… especially Aviv. But yeah, I’m done with it myself.

Though I will re-read this response to my tweet from Baby’s ass through out the day for pure joy inducing comedy:

@snowbankbb @phish not disagreeing here. Thought it was beautiful but @avivhadar needs (should) explain exactly what he meant.— The Baby's Mouth (@TheBabysMouth) September 13, 2013

And people really doubt the magic of twitter…

    p.s.h.s … HA! well put

… Never seen Spiritualized. I’m missing something?

Hey, here’s a smallish but tasty drop

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oktrpba3f0woi0t/pVPA6H7bps

Two apparently hard to find but very very choice GD official release bonus disks

Two folders – each has individual FLAC files, an ffp file for the flacs that the non-geeks can ignore, and a zipfile MP3 version of the same tunes.

RT4.3 (denver 73) bonus disk – Cleveland 12.6.73 highlights including the remastered Dark Star. If you’ve never heard the remastered version you won’t believe how much extra FWWEEEP BWOOORP SCHWANANANANA KABONG it has from Phil. You know all the alien mind control laser stuff? There’s like ten times the lasers. I don’t believe Best Evers…except every time I listen to this track.

**this one’s worth having in FLAC for the remastering**

The MP3 zip for this one also includes my patched version of the Here Comes Sunshine – another Best Ever contender that’s ruined in circulating versions by the brutal cut/patch at the end. So, not professionally remastered, but worth having. Garcia’s second solo (after the pause, starting at about 8:30) is one of My Favorite Things.

Academy Theater 1972 – this was released as the Rockin’ the Rhein bonus disk. Despite the info on the files, the Sugar Mag > Caution sequence is from 3.22. This Dark Star and the Caution madness both set the template for the better known Europe versions that followed & are swanky ’72 primo Dead in their own right. There’s a unique melodic jam before Uncle John’s that’s pretty special.

  13. MrCompletely Says:

    @ l’il um: yes.

    Yes, you are.

  14. little umbrellas Says:

k, I’ll check it out. Thanks for the GD drop.

  15. Stoney Case Says:

wow, baby’s ass went from being jealous they didn’t write the letter, to being critical about said letter.

    endless entertainment!

  16. P.S.H.S Says:

been on a bit of a listening hiatus, trying to find the right road to go down. all of the miles talk that last few day is sparking my interest. might explore some of those cats again, it’ s been a while, maybe smoke some jazz cigarettes

  17. little umbrellas Says:

Oi C. Finished Light last night. Thanks very much.

  18. snow Says:

while still thinking it was beautiful. contradicting yourself in 140 characters is a rare skill.

  19. little umbrellas Says:

    Jazz Cigarette+Live Evil =:) ;))

  20. MrCompletely Says:

the remastered Cleveland Dark Star should only be played under absolutely maximal buzz, volume and audio fidelity conditions for proper impact

  21. snow Says:

Thank for the treats @C. pumped to hear the extra lasers!!!

  22. P.S.H.S Says:

anyone have any good recs for kids listening? my boys are 3 now and I want to start stuffing their earholes with music that I like too.

  23. MrCompletely Says:

Glad you liked it @um. Harrison’s pretty interesting, huh? The other two (Nova Swing and Empty Space) are both quite different and yet very similar in tone and style.

Next week the new Pynchon comes out!!!

If you like Live/Evil you’ll love the Cellar Door Sessions. Since it’s the same thing, but just lots more of it.

  24. SOAM Says:

Trey-more timber ho’s and no quarters please

  25. Jtran Says:

anyone have a quick link to the albany YEM sbd?
