Dick’s Picks 2013

*****

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

***

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

***

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

***

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

***

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

***

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

***

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

the fact snow is not yet blocked by the baby’s ass 🙄

  8. MrCompletely Says:

There are a lot of great shows from ’82, SOAM. Totally agree. And very few really weak ones. A bunch that are just kind of average, but not many that are actually bad.

  9. marcoesq Says:

baby’s ass posts more selfie pics on twitter than most 22yr old females

  10. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

Anyone see MBV this tour yet?

  11. bob dylan Says:

C, its kinda like paying for music… aint nobody got cash for that. def limits the amount you can discover thats for sure.

  12. MrCompletely Says:

there are, unfortunately, a lot of bad SBDs from that year. But also, some of the great AUDs.

  13. MrCompletely Says:

it’s just nuts, @bob. they’re trying to kill the goose for one extra golden egg.

  14. marcoesq Says:

TheBabysWax is pretty entertaining. mocking the best of both worlds

  15. Kaveh Says:

@SOAM — Love Throwing Stones from that year; so fresh.

  16. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

$60 for MBV, I assume it’s worth it though

  17. MrCompletely Says:

@Df, if they were coming to my town I’d pay it for sure

  18. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    Word

  19. Stoney Case Says:

marco, some of the arguments they get in with other fans are priceless! They are like the ‘Vue meets Oral Roberts’ of the Phish universe.

“We work really hard to understand Phish, then write about it. What do you do?”

^ was one of my favorite tweets. What do I do? “Not work hard to understand Phish”

  20. marcoesq Says:

I do everything else in the world BESIDES work hard to understand phish

  21. snow Says:

    Vue meets Oral Roberts…. lulz

  22. MiA Says:

    That is hilarious

  23. marcoesq Says:

and their unlikely alliance with the w a x b a n k s is comical to say the least. he’s had enough of thebabyswax but it sounds like they want to ride it out a little

  24. ren Says:

What do I do? “Not work hard to understand Phish”

    ^priceless

  25. snow Says:

    but seriously folks
    SF at SEA
    Red vs Blue
    Bloods vs Crips

This is going to be a great game. Strength on Strength. Sunday night.
I’m not sure how I’m going to get through the next 48 hours.
I feel like Seattle wins with home field advantage but I wouldn’t put more than $1 on it.
