Dick’s Picks 2013

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

Marco, people remember SPAC as the tour opener and BGCA as tour closer from summer.

  2. Selector J Says:

@aj – You are killing me with the FF banter.

“I know D.Bres is my quarterback and that that is a good thing, so I will take it.

Not sure why that is hilarious but I seriously lol’d.

fyi – “D. Bres” is a product of the perennial power house and uber-affluent Westlake High School in Austin. Texas is so weird that way. For some reason rich kids are good at football here.

Back in VA, I went to the high school with all the golf course kids and we were awesome at tennis, golf, field hockey, and soccer.

Meanwhile, the Hampton (Allen Iverson’s hometown) and Newport News (Michael Vick’s hometown) kids would pwn us in all the real sports (i.e. football and basketball).

We were good at football once, or so I heard. We had this guy named Lawerence Taylor. My mom taught him math. No nans.

Well it’s a well known fact in the hippie community that I am a HUGE stonerfuck. Have no idea where I picked up 10/24/94 (perhaps from the RLP?) b/c MiA’s link clearly states 11/26/94. No wonder I was so confused. Double d’oh!

Alright T3 I’ll listen to your precious Today in Phishtory show in light of it being from Austin. & perhaps your ‘gooey’ ’98 link taboot. But that’s it.

  15. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

2013 is definitely a great year, vapes. after not listening to phish for over two weeks, the first thing i put on was 2013- that is a good sign of playback value and interesting music.

oh my! this DWD->undermind is the juice! $$$. love the disease and the way it melts into undermind provides a buzz. trey on nitrous vocals at the outset of undermind. killer tone.

miner calls it the unforgettable combo from the set of the year. agreed.

  21. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

Ya Jerome, my finances aren’t quite there. Unless someone has a cheap hotel I can get in on for Hampton?

  22. gavinsdad Says:

it’s the ALO Slave. even n00beronis like myself know that.

SPLIT chat: ALO contains some really out there versions of certain tunes yet NOT a split. i have been doing some phishtracks listening based on jam length (15 mins baseline) but i notice that Splits usually can get beserk in a way shorter timeframe. question for the catalog completists: what was the first Split to really break the mold and go big. was it this version from Laguna Seca 94 at 15+ mins??

  23. MiA Says:

I really liked the Split on the Buenaventura “extra” CD. 3/21/93 (memory?)

  24. Jerome Garcia Says:

Alright Giovanni ALO Slave commencing. Been a minute since I’ve spun that one.

Also Spot premium has a bunch of new Live Phish upped incl 10/30/10 Boardwalk Hall. Yes! Gonna spin the Zep show in all its SBD glory after taking this Slave to the dome.

Sucks Df. Hoping The Universe provides for you compadre.

  25. MiA Says:

Target Shows would be great. That place is pretty boomy and SBD’s would be very nice. You could get good sound on the floor but still lost all the high end Fishman sounds IMO.

Didn’t see Jane’s in ATX JG.
