Dick’s Picks 2013

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

Great moment from Sunday’s Furthur show…after the first verse of Let it Grow, when Branford appears* Weir says “Security, please!”

*the only reason I’m listening to this

Had a blowout at the end of my Junior year of college (’89), someone brought SoCo. Haven’t touched it since. The next morning was the worst hangover I ever had (at the time). Friend drove me to KFC, I ordered 2 Chicken Littles (chicken patty about 2″x2″ on a bun w/mayo. $1 each.) and 1 order of fries, or whatever potato variety they were selling at the time. My receipt read:

    2 CLIT
    1 POT

    msg nye – yawn

found the link to the whole thing on soundcloud last week and have been spinning it a bit. Obv love Save Charlie, great track, but kind of disappointing it’s 3 new songs, a cover, and 3 remixes.

Oversaturated EP better concept front to back.

Regardless, have my tickets for their show in November here.

  10. voopa Says:

Hmm, so now do we do Reading or a couple NYEs?

Maybe just the 30th, fly home Tuesday. On the cheap.

  11. jtran Says:

also, mount kimbie cancelled their show tonight in SD due to “unavoidable complications” with the venue.

Code for their stage was too big for venue? Or code for not enough tickets sold?

  12. voopa Says:

It will be their 30th MSG show, on their 30th year on 12/30…

  13. voopa Says:

jtran- Where was the show? Maybe the promoter was a dick.

Oh wait, that’s usually the case.

  14. jtran Says:

…and they will play 30 songs!!!

  15. jtran Says:

voopa, porter’s pub on UCSD campus

  16. dorn76 Says:

I hope that’s a yawn with adrenaline fueled excitement.

Fuck yeah NYC on 12/28 and 12/30 for me. Annual “Bring the wife” show followed by a “Bring a bucket for my melted face” show.

  17. Mr. Palmer Says:

    I’m a 28th and 30th kind a guy.. 29th is kiddos 9th B-day..

Enjoyed last years run… fresh momentum from 2013, hot fall tour, 30th anniversary= Best NYE run at MSG since ’98, by a lot

the things we remember about our last SoCo experiences…

mine was between jr/sr years of hs. spent the night at a bonfire on a beach on lake michigan (new buffalo-ish). drank it out of a wine glass I was so bold. the thing I most recall though was tearing up rt. 12 in my little blue civic, blaring the Amy’s Farm tapes for my friends who didn’t know what phish was and during the Possum almost getting into an accident in the foggy night because I had to avoid hitting… a possum.

oh, that and trying (i.e. failing) to sneak into my friend’s house at 5am when we said we’d be back at like midnight. I definitely stunk like the booze and had my head out the window the majority of that ride home. ugh.

  19. vapebraham Says:

    booze is bad newz.

  20. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

yeah, it is not my favorite of theirs, but it is fairly interesting and worth the listen. I still like their live stuff so much more anyway that the studio tracks are never going to do it for me. I think I might have just missed them but I need to try to catch this tour

  21. Kaveh Says:

  22. voopa Says:

Oh right, 30 songs. Maybe not such a great idea.

  23. Jerome Garcia Says:

    booze is bad newz

    ^Honest is as honest does

  24. marcoesq Says:

No MSG for this guy. Wife will be 8+ months pregnant and is already pissed she’d missing out on the 4 shows I’m doing next month. Oh well.

  25. marcoesq Says:

That means that WSP in Nov will most likely be my final show of the year. Womp
