Dick’s Picks 2013

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

*****

Tweezer” 8.31 II

This late-set surprise completely blew up as Trey prominently featured his Camden ’09 “Tweezer” lick plucked from Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”

***

Sand” 8.30 II

This jam provided the centerpiece of night one; the best version in a light summer for “Sand.”

***

Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31 II

The jam of the weekend at Dick’s—a multi-thematic monster anchored by the morphing rhythms of Jon Fishman.

***

Stash” 8.30 I

Though not quite on the level of Merriweather’s gem, this version elevates beyond the norm.

***

Carini” 9.1 II

A feel-good jam to cap a feel-good summer.

***

Caspian > Piper” 9.1 II

The second consecutive, out-of-character Denver “Caspian” segued, unfinished into a hot “Piper.”

***

Ocelot” 8.30 I

This was the jam with which the weekend began to elevate; my favorite version of the three thousand played this year.

***

Bathtub Gin” 8.31 I

A straightforward, though peaked-out and inspirational “Gin.”

Say Something > Walls of the Cave” 8.30 II

It didn’t take long for the band to place “Say Something” in the second set. Look for big things from this jam come fall tour.

spinning 7.1.10 Free. not the same fishman as ’13 phish. mike has to carry him on his back.

  2. Jerome Garcia Says:

@Kaveh thanks for the new Mule album link. Going to spin that after I get through 10/30/10 Get the Led Out. Think I’m going to start w/ Disc 2 which are other artists singing the songs on Disc 1 backed by Mule.

Getting Mule kicked at Stubbs on 11/8 followed by George Porter Jr on 11/9. Not a bad lil Fri/Sat 1-2 punch w/ Warren & GPJ.

  3. Kaveh Says:

^ No worries…it is good; I started on Disc 2 and then hit up Disc 1. Good stuff on both.

  6. Jerome Garcia Says:

Agreed Vapestar re: ’10 but still sounds pretty darn good to these ears. Not on par w/ ’12 & ’13 but def highly enjoyable.

  7. Mr. Palmer Says:

still dragging my feet on MBV in NYC… not sure why..

  8. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    palmer, just do it

  9. dusty Says:

Soco and turkey hill ice tea was one of my first mixers. Ugg. Metallica on city island was a much better first concert. Marco/Bingo, don’t make me break out my street fighter cheat combos. #backbackupupdownforwardfireball

  10. Mr. Palmer Says:

If I don’t have to work I’ll go. Don’t know schedule quite yet and already requested a few days in Nov for AC. Should be good though.

  11. marcoesq Says:

wow, this year will be the 28th-31st shows of Phish’s career at MSG on the 28th-31st. how bout that

  12. MiA Says:

I’ve never had a sip of SoCo. Nor Jack Daniels. Or Wild Turkey. Just no desire whatsoever. I do like a little bit of Scotch occasionally, but it’ll put me down hard, so I rarely ever do it.

I could put down a bottle of wine with no problem, but 1 glass of scotch and you’re pulling me out of the rose bushes.

  13. IrieWalton Says:

Maybe I’m over thinking things, which wouldn’t be the first time, but I would have thought that they would have released the 30th Anny run details, which supposedly is happening in early December, before the NYE details.

    Just sayin’.

  14. jdub Says:

No 30th run – fall tour is 30th anny run, or New Years. Fishman’s wife is due to have a baby around the first week in December.

  15. Mr. Palmer Says:

Love me some Jack Daniels once in a while… not a habit though..

Pretty sure Fishman’s incoming 15th child borked the 30th ann run

  16. jdub Says:

Hard licker always seemed to make me sicker. No stomach for SoCo, jaeger, and company.

  17. IrieWalton Says:

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification @Jdub.
Hope everyone here is doing well.

  18. Jerome Garcia Says:

Couldn’t get the earlier link to play on my work cpu or smarty pants ph… Dug around & found this link for Shout! streamability. Thx again Kaveh.

  22. jdub Says:

Hampton is just a warm up anyway. Now Glen Falls through Hartford is can’t miss. But you don’t wan’t to take a chance that Rochester is the Utica of ’13. Or maybe it’s Reading? Either way, AC has great odds to melt brains. Or at least entertain.

This run is so short there is no where for the band hide.

  23. Mr. Palmer Says:

I feel like I always catch the beginning of tours. Will be nice to catch the end for once.

  24. joe Says:

no 30th anniversary run? I was really looking forward to the Boston show I was promised. (and jim beam has been my go to drink for the last decade or so, with a splash of ginger or sometimes jack daniels. have the buzz dialed in to about 4 generous drinks before I know that I need to stop. most of the time. have to admit I’ve been brainwashed by the bb and have been buying the occasional 6 pack of Troeggs perpetual IPA to switch it up)

  25. joe Says:

Worcester, Hartford an (hopefully) Halloween will have to do for now.
