We’re Going Back to Jazzfest!

4.26.96 – The Fairgrounds – New Orleans

Yesterday, out of nowhere, Phish announced their return to the greatest festival in the land—The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival—exactly 18 years to the date that they played the Fairgrounds on April 26, 1996. Between then and now, however, Phish has been absent from the annual gathering due to the unruly element that their fans brought to the site. With nearly two decades since their visit, however, the band—and their fans—are being invited back! And with the announcement of a Spring date in the South, fans’ heads are already spinning with the possibilities of what might going on around that date.

urlPhish all but ignored the South last year, stopping only in Alpharetta for a mid-week two-night stand. Additionally, no 3.0 festival date has been a standalone affair, as Austin City Limits kicked off Fall 2010, Outside Lands was in the middle of Summer 2011, and both appearances at Bonnaroo took place in the amidst summer tour. Putting these factors together, along with the already swirling rumor of two-dates in Austin following Jazzfest, we just might be looking at our first Spring tour since 1994! The Mike Gordon Band tours until April 6th, giving the guys enough time to hit the Barn, brush up on things and fly south for Spring!

Regardless of what dates, if any, are booked before or after this weekend, there are limitless possibilities in New Orleans, alone. Anyone who’s been to Jazzfest knows that the day time Fairground shows comprise only a fraction of the story. Jazzfest goes on 24 hours a day, with musicians performing club shows and sit-ins until the wee hours of the morning. With all four members of Phish in the Bayou, one can bet that they will pop up with musicians all over town. Back in 1996, when the Allman Brothers were the bigger headliner of the festival, they also played an independent, arena gig at Lakefront Arena, a slot that seems perfect for Phish to slide right into. One way or the other, one can be sure that the main stage at the fairgrounds won’t be the only stage that the members of Phish grace throughout the weekend.

Few expected to wake up in the middle of January to news of the next Phish date, but lo and behold, the community has been abuzz all day long discussing plans, booking hotels and getting excited for New Orleans!  The glow of the holiday run had yet to wear off and here we are talking about Phish in the Bayou and beyond. The next thirty years are off to quite a start!

I’ll rent one of these below. We need to get the BBQ chefs of the BB together for a Q’off. LeoW I’m looking at you. I know there are many on here.

There are more Suburus in Austin than there are Cowboy Hats.

    Funniest line of the day.

  9. jtran Says:

would be fun to rank BB beer snobs based on the high quality breweries they have within walking distance, and also within a 10 minute drive. because of course proximity to the source is the deciding factor in beer knowledge!

Miner – good work on type II cast. I feel your comments and views on the msg run, 12/29 and specifically DWD>Carini are perfectly aligned with my post-show comments I put on the BB that night. I praised that chunk of music as tops for 2013 and ultimately an all timer. All of which put 12/29 back in its rightful sacred place, which you also commented on. Additionally you agreed that this was the best holiday run since 1998, which I also proclaimed on here. Obvious stuff really for anyone with a decent ear for Phish but just thought I would explain how happy it makes me to hear that others agree with my glowy post-show proclamation that 12/29 and dwd>carini WAS the mount top all this climbing has led to. I may not get much respect here in the bb but I nail headed that shit even in my spunion glowing post show state. Sorry tahweezer but 12/29 pushed you down a notch. 12/29 was straight business yo. Going to spin 12/29/98 out of respect. So proud the band erased the recent (3.0) runs of below msg holiday run stantard with a clean nipple slice on their 30th year.

Phish wins again and have made msg holiday shows very special again. And lets be honest, they also saved the glorious Hampton memories of old by throwing down a run this fall worthy of comparison to the preceeding classics in that room. If not for this 2013 fall and holiday run, both venues would have lost their legendary luster, which is now a mute point. I cant wait for what the future holds and am petitioning for Boardwalk Hall to get a yearly 3 pack. One can hope and dream right. Thx again Mr Hood!

Preparing to crack my first Hop Ranch thanks to the kindness of Vape. Lot of you guys have been hyping this one, so I am pretty excited!

  12. tela's_muff Says:

^not sure about knowledge or any of that, but certainly getting a fresh in house beer right off the tap is the way to go.

  13. stapes Says:

I can vouch for tela’s regarding Odd13. Their DIPA is no joke. I’d like to do a blind tasting one time between that, Elder and EB.

  14. stapes Says:

@Ricks hope you enjoy. I was very pleasantly surprised by that one!

  15. lumpyhead Says:

^i feel i have a decent ear for Phish and I’d say i personally liked the Miami ’03 run better. although the JEMP set was next level shit that i’ll exclude much like we exclude Cypress, Storage Set, etc from our lists and rankings. but Phish killed it this run and all is right in the world of programs and messages.

  17. MiA Says:

I consider Big Cypress a holiday run AND a Festival.

Best ever holiday run and festival

  18. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

odd 13- thanks. next time i am in the front range, i am making it a priority to drink some of that beer.

  19. tela's_muff Says:

    cheers to that MiA!

  20. hoedown Says:

100% Agree on Cypress but never include that in any comparison conversations….Cypress is in a class of its own and will never, ever be topped. The ultimate had to be there experience. I’ve read people claim the music in general was not great at cypress to which I ignore but think to myself….man you just have no clue and had to be there. One of the most amazing experiences of my pathetic existence….

  21. little umbrellas Says:

    thanks very much Dusty. Amped.

-just finishing up Action Bronson’s Blue Chips Vol2 mixtape. awesome.

He’s on tour and playing Slim’s in SF on Feb5th. Only problem is ZPZ is performing the ‘Roxy and Elsewhere’ album at the Regency Ballroom the same day.

Sorry Action, been waiting to see you, but I’m gonna have to wait till next time. Not really the hugest Dweezil fan… but ‘Roxy’ live!?! I missed it live at the Roxy, but I will not miss it in my home town.

    Village of the Sun yall.

    Hoedown Dangerfield

  23. Gavinsdad Says:

LU – ZPZ completely destroyed Roxy. Just disgusting. So was the little venue me and kaya saw them in

  24. Gavinsdad Says:

Biggest fail ever. I’ve said it before. Me and the wife were at my folks in west palm beach at the time and didn’t go.
