We’re Going Back to Jazzfest!

4.26.96 – The Fairgrounds – New Orleans

Yesterday, out of nowhere, Phish announced their return to the greatest festival in the land—The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival—exactly 18 years to the date that they played the Fairgrounds on April 26, 1996. Between then and now, however, Phish has been absent from the annual gathering due to the unruly element that their fans brought to the site. With nearly two decades since their visit, however, the band—and their fans—are being invited back! And with the announcement of a Spring date in the South, fans’ heads are already spinning with the possibilities of what might going on around that date.

urlPhish all but ignored the South last year, stopping only in Alpharetta for a mid-week two-night stand. Additionally, no 3.0 festival date has been a standalone affair, as Austin City Limits kicked off Fall 2010, Outside Lands was in the middle of Summer 2011, and both appearances at Bonnaroo took place in the amidst summer tour. Putting these factors together, along with the already swirling rumor of two-dates in Austin following Jazzfest, we just might be looking at our first Spring tour since 1994! The Mike Gordon Band tours until April 6th, giving the guys enough time to hit the Barn, brush up on things and fly south for Spring!

Regardless of what dates, if any, are booked before or after this weekend, there are limitless possibilities in New Orleans, alone. Anyone who’s been to Jazzfest knows that the day time Fairground shows comprise only a fraction of the story. Jazzfest goes on 24 hours a day, with musicians performing club shows and sit-ins until the wee hours of the morning. With all four members of Phish in the Bayou, one can bet that they will pop up with musicians all over town. Back in 1996, when the Allman Brothers were the bigger headliner of the festival, they also played an independent, arena gig at Lakefront Arena, a slot that seems perfect for Phish to slide right into. One way or the other, one can be sure that the main stage at the fairgrounds won’t be the only stage that the members of Phish grace throughout the weekend.

Few expected to wake up in the middle of January to news of the next Phish date, but lo and behold, the community has been abuzz all day long discussing plans, booking hotels and getting excited for New Orleans!  The glow of the holiday run had yet to wear off and here we are talking about Phish in the Bayou and beyond. The next thirty years are off to quite a start!

does anyone remember how hippy the sound tribe scene used to be? i remember tons of crystals, dreadies, etc. i was given a ticket a couple of years ago to see them and it was much more of a bisco scene, less hippy and heady, more flat-brimmed and molled (which is fine, i had a nice time- not rying to pass judgement, but it all seemed very different) is my memory serving me well here, or am i bat shit crazy?

  5. btb Says:

Oh man, what’s next? Wo0kie Foot? Ekoostik Hookah? Keller?

  6. stapes Says:

You are correct Heady. Knew lots of crystal loving STS9 fans from my early days in Ft Collins. Never got into them myself

So, went back and watched the GD parking lot scene documentary “Tye Died” last night (link above), which I had not seen for like 10 years minimum. Crazy look back, as that was filmed on the biggest run of shows I ever did (Summer 94 tour), so really captures the whole scene that I knew best. Easy to forget just how BIG the whole thing was, and how really freaky and counterculture it was. While Phish is a big, freaky scene, it really is nothing like the way this whole thing used to be, which is probably for the best. Interesting to watch the interviews of the young heads and how idealistic they all were and how certain they were that this thing would just go on and on. Worth a rewatch.

  8. George W. Kush Says:

    Pretty spot on Heady.

  9. Jerome Garcia Says:

You’re spot on heady. Completely different in the early aughts ie the time of the ’02 release of their live double CD Seasons 01 than it’s been in the past few yrs. Last times I caught them was the Feelmore on 2/26/09 & being SF it was a mixture of both & then ACL aftershow outdoors at Stubbs on 10/2/09 which was def flat brim’d crowd. But did score some nice vehicle from some youngsters at parking garage across st from venue though…

  10. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

i was never very into them, but i would go to shows with some friends to dance and party. when i saw them a couple of years ago, it just seemed like a very different scene than i remembered.

  11. marcoesq Says:

    Murph left STS9?? Oh no!

    Who cares

  12. marcoesq Says:

I enjoyed STS9 for a few years between like ’04-’07. Then they started to suck it IMO. Murph went from crystal heady dude to suit wearing dude almost overnight

  13. Jerome Garcia Says:

Phish Jazz Festivarians PSA for Anders Osborne at The Fairgrounds on Sat 4/26. Please do yourself a favor & catch Anders if you can. Most likely will be playing mid aftn (shouldn’t overlap w/ Phish) on the Gentilly Stage which is the other ‘main’ stage on the opposite end of the horse track.

Emergency question for stoner fucks. Drug test in 2 weeks. (Why they are testing everyone now after being with the company 8 years without one and never having any sort of issue with work performance personally. Never called in sick been late by 10 minutes maybe 3 times in 8 years is beyond me but let’s assume I have to pass). Regular but not heavy smoker. 2-3 times a week with one bowl usually the maximum amount but that’s been a 20 year routine. What’s the best method to be ok?

  15. marcoesq Says:

Joe, I’m sure others will have some answers as well but Dandelion root tea x2 every day for the next 2wks plus LOTS of water is a good start

  16. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

@aj- i watched that a few weeks ago. it had been years since i had seen it. the grateful dead were huge- gigantic. they are a true music and american phenomenon. i am very happy that the phish scene never grew to the size of the dead scene.

although, phish festivals do draw huge numbers- ball 70,000; went 75,000; lemonwheel 60,000; oswego 65,000; cypress 85,000; it 60,000; coventry 65,000. what were the numbers for the 3.0 festivals? i would guess considerably lower.

  17. George W. Kush Says:

Joe, lots of water. XXXtraclean from GNC works like a charm. follow the directions. if you are skinny, 2 weeks should be enough

  18. stapes Says:

Could go synthetic. Check out Quick Fix.

I think Fest8 and Superball were “only” around 30k

  22. Snigglebeach Says:

@ joe. Fellow boston guy too.

Go to vitamin world. There are a bunch around here. I go to rt 114 Danvers. Ask for Quick Caps. They will know what you are looking for. Might be called Super Q tabs (something to that nature.)

These are key for older and or heavier folks. Just follow instructions. Take the morn of test. Those dumb drinks they sell at some places only work for skinny 18 y/o’s. (Which I assume you are not).

Lots of water leading up and you’ll pass even if u smoked the day before.

  23. George W. Kush Says:

    stabbin. Damn glitchy site.

  24. Joe Says:

And seriously if they want to put a little weed in my piss over my track record of performance than fuck them anyway.

  25. George W. Kush Says:

yeah Joe, Im pretty skinny (though not 18yrs old) and have always had success with the drinks, lots of water, and maybe some niacin pills although they make you itch like hell.
