  1. Stoney Case Says:

For those that missed this yesterday, lurkers, join in. You all know I’ll pimp a jam to oblivion once it catches my ear, so you may as well check it out. This weeks version, the Johnny B Goode from Denver ’97. We rarely make it past the first set, which deserves the praise and hyperbole we constantly heap upon it. You know, it’s the real deal. The JBG, however, deserves more attention. Besides being a unique psych rock excursion, there is a straight heavenly passage to the 4th dimension started by Trey around 13:00 mark that is worth repeating several times:

island twist in the car this morning – amazing that that floyd’d out symphony was done on the fly, live. $$$. followed with Niagra ’95 mike’s at home. evokes the same awe.

now spinning an oldie but goodie on CD — allman bros. beginnings. OG brothers. double album. $$$

shaman does good work. hop prophet.

  3. BingosBrother Says:

When I see Hop Prophet, my mind immediately jumps to Hot Pocket. Jingle all the way. Hop Prophet. Git em Rickey!

  4. ren Says:

I’m pretty sure I skip that JBG on the Phish Destroys comp pretty much everytime and never had any idea what I’ve been missing!!! Shoulda just checked the track length as that would have been a good tip off

  5. RicksFork Says:

Bingos, weren’t we talked about getting you Topped at one point too? JBG commencing now…

Back to the subject of good Tubes from yesterday, the opener of the Island Tour holds honorable mention on the JV squad.

  6. Spasm Waiter Says:

Hey hombres. 20 degs in NY this am. Florida last week is a distant memory. Enjoying Dayton 97, Tube and everything else. Taking in Reba in the Target parking lot while junior naps in the back seat of the pickup. Getting pretty fired up for Nola in six weeks or so. Looking forward to meeting some BBers down there.

  7. Stoney Case Says:

ren, it’s so insane. i’m calling it ‘My favorite ’97 jam that no one talks about’ totally unique sound for the era, to my ears as well. Not thematically tied to the phunktrain like much of the ‘Destroys’ comp

  8. Mr. Palmer Says:

Good old Denver jam from LP 11, Stoney… Definitely an overlooked gem.. Will re-spin..

I got Auburn Hill’s ’97 Cued up also. Been a minute or two.

Also want to check out Tela’s Mark McGwire rec..

  9. ren Says:

Putting work off to spin it right now

  10. Stoney Case Says:

just ignore the verses. trey struggles a bit with the words, as i don’t think JBG was played often. There’s also this sense of, “We just played a defining set of our career in the 1st slot, what the fuck now?” Then the jam…

  11. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

stoney- i dig your constant pamping of the denver jbg. i have a buddy who is not a huge phish head, but used to go to some shows. he went to the two nights in denver ’97. i got him a copy of the live phish release- we have had many a vape and brew listening to that jbg.

  12. ren Says:

Mike does some great work near the halfway mark. Trey and Page add some nice staccato coloring to the build. Seething with energy. Then the wonk-evator gets turned up a notch allowing things to get a little weirder, more skewed. Fishs driving beat helps keep things grounded as the ideas morph and meander. Rhythm wah-washes as the temp increases and Page finds some pretty melodies providing a nice foil the alien respiration backdrop. Things start to fade out and head towards the more ambient while Trey finishes with some of his more standard digit diddling.

Overall a very unique sound to the jam from an unexpected vehicle. Wish I would have traveled to the Midwest as a young head.

  13. ren Says:

…or Denver as the case may be

  14. vapebraham Says:

my friend (my friend) took the plunge and got the vapexhale cloud evo. quality looking desk unit. report to follow. he can hardly wait to receive it. took him a week or so to make up his mind.

  15. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

phish played johnny b. goode 23 times, but only once like 11/17/97.

  16. Stoney Case Says:

i’m good at beating a jam into your heads.

hoping everyone is well versed and nearly sick of

    10/27/95 Bowie
    12/28/95 Tweezer
    8/10/97 Cities
    12/7/99 Halley’s

  17. Stoney Case Says:

Austin! Don’t miss the Coup at SXSW

  18. Jerome Garcia Says:

ren I think the JGB in & of itself would have been indicator enough. Ha!

  19. Jerome Garcia Says:

D’oh! Reading & comprehension are obv not my strong points…nor the contents of Phish Destorys America.

  20. Jerome Garcia Says:

    ^strong suits rather. Double d’oh!

  21. jonacho Says:

The denver 97 set II is consistently overlooked. beyond the JBG – its a monster
glad its getting some love here.

night 1 11/16 also gets skipped by, but it too is killer. Miner has pamped the Timber from that show.

  22. lumpyhead Says:

thanks for the phish update, phish.

  23. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

@jonacho- i support your above comments.

  24. Stoney Case Says:

being the Hampton anniversary for 3.0, this would have made a crafty day to drop the new dates. thinking next week, around the 12th. Looks to be starting in late June, early July out east, any way we slices it.

  25. BingosBrother Says:

Yes Hop Prophet, but you should def take care of others before me. I am not a hopposieur like most of you well learned folk. But if there are any Chi town area brews you would like to peruse, please let me know.
