A Change of Pace

With tour a week away, I wanted to write a note about some changes this summer. I have loved being a one-man newsreel for five years, cranking out pieces before going to sleep each and every night. I have loved the feedback from all Phish fans and I have always enjoyed the conversations that my reviews have sparked. However, I find this Summer Tour to be a good point of transition. As the band enters a new chapter in their 31st year, armed with an album of fresh material, I am going to step away from my at-all-costs commitment to reviewing every show.

This is not to say that I won’t be writing during tour, I almost certainly will. Maybe I’ll write on the off days, maybe I’ll write after some shows—I really don’t know. Because people have come to expect my reviews every day, I just wanted to put it out there before tour that I am not going to hold myself to writing after every show. Perhaps I’ll get bored without writing and I’ll switch back to my old routine. I just don’t know. I am also not positive that I will be at every show. I’m kind of playing this summer by ear. As always, thanks for reading along and I’ll see you out there.

@ren: forgotten how intense and screaming Trey’s solo in this Cities was! #fretsOnFire

I didn’t get the impression, at all, that Fishman was messing around with his response re: The Mike’s second jam.. If he was, he’s a hell of an actor. Seemed genuinely perplexed by the question..

Got the Fuego album this weekend; the only song that doesn’t come across good for me on the album is Wombat. Otherwise, a really good album. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks Miner for all you do! Last half decade of Phishthoughts has been a great forum. Take you a break and enjoy the summer proper.

BUT, how oh how will we know if a show is good or not??? Online Phish community will be lost and resort to babysass without post-show reviews on the black page. Shucks.

happy mid-monday BB. Summer Phish is 10 days away!!!

Listening to the Fishman interview…I really agree with him about having “space” in music. One of my biggest complaints about a lot of artists these days.

Thx for everything Miner, stoked for you to do whatever you feel like after shows

GC- ARe you impressed with the USA performance thus far? Pre-Cup you didn’t seem to have high expectations… Or perhaps, it is better to say you didn’t expect them to play an exciting brand of soccer… Tune changed after 2 matches? From this novice perspective, both have been highly entertaining, particularly yesterday, despite the last 30 seconds.. ( although the play itself was a thing of beauty)

  16. jtran Says:

I was thinking about garret’s thoughts about US not playing soccer worth watching this morning too @palmer. Despite the result we looked like a very capable, organized and professional team yesterday, against the 4th best team in the world. A corner has definitely been turned in regards to the US style of play.

Your recaps will be missed miner but I think we all understand. Thanks for everything you’ve done these past 5 years

I love fishman’s initial reaction to the 2nd jam in mike’s. “Do you mean weekapaug? ”

Re US soccer- I’m a novice but the team looked so much better yesterday than they did vs Ghana. Unfortunately the outcome wasn’t the same but that final goal was beautiful. Can’t imagine the joy if that had been our team scoring on the last play.

The Ghana win was about what I would have expected. They tried to ride that Dempsey wonder goal for all it was worth, and just looked the whole time like a team that was hanging on for dear life. But they showed the grit that’s been a trademark (probably for lack of anything else) in getting that late goal.

I only had half an eye on the second half of the Portugal match, but from what I saw/heard they clicked a little more in all facets. There’s no way I’d cal Portugal the fourth best team in the world, though. Would still have placed the as “better” than the USA, but they had some very poor results in qualifying (against Israel, for example) and were already in the process of lying down against Germany before Pepe started throwing around the lumpy head.

But 4 points is really a solid haul, and they should go through to the knockouts (knock on wood), so the results are there, which is the important measure. The Germany match will be a leisurely one if Klinsmann and Loew don’t feel the need to grudge match, as a draw will do, so I probably won’t get a more informative look at how they’re actually playing until the knockouts.

that first caller for Fish at 47:00 definitely sounds like Mike.

  21. jtran Says:

I don’t personally think they’re the 4th best team based on form right now, just stating based off the FIFA rankings.

When/if we advance I think Belgium is a much better team then Portugal right now, but also totally beatable with the way this US team has come together and is playing right now.

  22. btb Says:

“are you talking about Weekapaug Groove?”

    LOL

  23. xpun Says:

I thought the caller that asked about the Fuego drum part sounded like Mike.
Fish talking about mike’s hotline was hilarious. Fish has a very infectious laugh

  24. dorn76 Says:

Mike is sick of 1st sets, too.

  25. btb Says:

On second listen, that does sound like Mike. “Momma Dance” so funny…
