Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

    Very punny, Miner.

Checks Twitter, relieved to still be followed by Stoney “Circle of Trust” Case.

Any news on that lost friend?

  2. dorn76 Says:

    Mystery solved.

Trey was laying back this year in order to calibrate the big red ears to hear the other 700 instruments of the orchestra.

  3. Kaveh Says:

    Fires up Undermind…again.

  4. roberto luongo Says:

everyone frantically checks twitter to check if friend or phishy

  5. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

  6. jtran Says:

you using my jokes now? used that on the last post yo!

  7. butter Says:

    Bad ass playlist right there

I’m a bit confused how 13 Chalk is only #5

At the end of 13 Summer, Tahoe Tweez and Dicks Chalk were like the best 2 jams ever

But if you look at 1,2,3 those are some of the most uplifting jams you’ll hear

Dicks kicks out the uplifting, victory jams

What’s crazy too is that Dicks highlight jams could pretty much be 3.0 highlight jams – throw Tahoe Tweez on there and u may have the top 4 uplifting jams of 3.0

  8. butter Says:

Trey prolly comes out like Hendrix spitting fire, with all the kids left scratching their heads after this run

  9. Stoney Case Says:

Dicks12 Caspian. Has to be on this list. I’m damn serious.

  10. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

“A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.”

    Damn straight.

  11. Stoney Case Says:

No news on lost friend. Robummin. Literally one of the best kids I know. Of I had a son, I’d be proud if he were Lucious. Kid was born and raised around mountains and rivers. Been missing a week driving from job in Idaho to school in Montana.

  12. little umbrellas Says:

nice list. dig it man. Miner droppin tunes in one of my fav parts about this site.

    music devour.

ps. been pamping it recently, and watched it again over some hash’y tubes with some homies last night. f-ing trippy, you gotta let it roll a second before being weirded out. very cool. ‘Duality’, the video, by Captain Murphy(FlyLo). tis on You Yoube.

Hope you all have great Dick’s experiences this weekend!@those in attendance.

  13. little umbrellas Says:

Vibes Stoney, sorry to hear about that man. Hope’ing it’s not time to give up hope yet.

  14. Stoney Case Says:

In case y’all missed my thoughts on race relations over the weekend

    And of course

  15. dorn76 Says:

    Hmm, check the time stamps…

  16. butter Says:

That Darth Caspian came before the Light and was quite the head banger

Hopefully he turns up Stoney, any chance he’s just being a kid and met a girl at some country property off the grid?

  17. dorn76 Says:

Pretty ostentatious to allege joke-pilfering, along with the chutzpah to think your posts are actually being read!

  18. roberto luongo Says:

great thing about Trey is I still feel 90% of the issue is intent. back in the day I’d try to guess trajectories of tour or whether or not the band was on a roll.

these days ya never know. shit comes out of nowhere. I like the lil time off too. anyone that’s ever played a guitar knows sometimes the best thing to do is just put it down a bit. come back fresh. not enough time away to get tight or lose dexterity. just get refreshed.

plus I still feel that rolling through the new material every night was taking up a lot of Trey’s creative energy. we’re going to get all those songs but hopefully over the 3 island shows of this run they fit in more relaxed and let the rest of the sets flow.

that’s part of the fun these days. contrarian Trey can show up anywhere and fuckin crush. or not. ha

  19. Joe Says:

Petrichor > tte. Or tte > petrichor. (Segue symbols)

  20. Joe Says:

Petrichor also sounds like it could be the name of the evil company in a sci-Fi story

  21. Stoney Case Says:

Possible, yet unlikely Butter. Kid gets along great with parents and sister. They are all friends. He was supposed to reach Billings last Wednesday for School.

  22. Mr. Palmer Says:

Agree with this list Dick’s Light is , indeed, the mac daddy of Dick’s jams.

  23. Kaveh Says:

Dicks12 Caspian. Has to be on this list. I’m damn serious.

    ^ This!

  24. Kaveh Says:

This Sand from ’12 is excellent!
