Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

I also hate to be that guy again, but the Light did succeed along with the DWD. I’m not one to shun another fan for their desire for Phish to play long jams, but when the entire set is a long jam with songs inbetween I expect a Phish fan to know better. IMO of course. I agree on the CDT however. It did nothing for me. The 2nd half of that set on the other hand. Sand.

Kraft is one of the most respected owners in the league. Pervert sicko? Again, sour grapes with no factual basis.

And just who did Brady have to throw to last year btw? Using stats to disparage TB… now that is rich… damn grapes.

My buddy blew huge rails with one Dan M arino in the early 90’s. No word of a lie I swear it.

  3. bobby weird Says:

Oh, and last year was last year MiA. No translation to the year to come. Watch and learn brah. Shock and awe.

Whose your team anyway? Easy to take pot shots in a vacuum.

  4. little umbrellas Says:

Cash Pony. Cool band. That was a good show. Very technical. Lots of interesting time signatures but still melodic. Heavy.

  5. MiA Says:

I have no team Bobby. It’s much easier to be objective.

  6. MiA Says:

Ha ha. Kraft respected? Ricki Noel Lander?

Bobby kraft was 71 when his “girlfriend” sugar baby toy, was 32?

    1/2 + 7 didn’t work. Creepy.

  7. MiA Says:

    “Using stats to disparage Brady”

Ha ha. I guess for a legal assistant that’s verboten to bring “facts” and “quantifiable measurements” into the analysis of ability of one year over another.

A point is not a line but look at the last few years. He’s 37. Since 2010 he’s been drooping. I like Brady and think he was a super talented QB. But he can’t be the team as C pointed out.

We will see what happens this year but I just find it amazingly easy to find the “Tom Brady is god” homers out there. Same with A-Rod homers.

  8. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Pretty sure the Mannings have trademarked the drooping qb motif

  9. dorn76 Says:

Can’t take MiA football thoughts seriously until I see a pic of his face painted in team colors while screaming at the game on the tv.

  10. MiA Says:

Allegiance to brand! Allegiance to location! Allegiance to political narrative!

  11. vapebraham Says:

Chris: check yoself. Dicks Light ’14 is the chronic. $$$.

  12. vapebraham Says:

Same is true for dicks disease.

  13. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    who wants my phan card?

I have not had the time to listen back yet or donwload. :/

  14. RicksFork Says:

Kaya – on the $ rating scale what is the highest number of $’s awarded? Can I have an example of that? Like your system, but need some context.

  15. 9:30 mark in the Dick's Simple, Esq. Says:

    Allegiance to the Dick’s Simple!

  16. marcoesq Says:

I’ll be taking phan cards at 11am and 2pm today by the back entrance.

  17. DavidSilver Says:

$$$ is tops unless an outlier a la Tahweezer pops up. Then $$$$. Science.

  18. vapebraham Says:

Ricks: 3 tiered simple system. $ = good (worth noting); $$ = great (worth recommending); $$$ = exceptionally great (seek it out). U can add +’s for nuance.

$$$$ is beyond exceptionally great and reserved for top ten material of all time type of stuff.

Example of the system in context: the Mastermind dipa from Fiddlehead is $$$. So smooth, creamy, and tasty. No hint of alcohol and bursting with floral aroma.

On Beer hiatus by not buying. Circumvented that last night by inviting beer loving neighbor over for dinner. He’s got a stash of the $$$ VT brew.

  19. vapebraham Says:

Neighbor wearing summer 96 vintage phish T. Preserved in his moms house until recently. Logo faded, cotton fresh.

  20. RicksFork Says:

Thanks Kaya. That’s what I was looking for. Like the beer example.

I’m headed to Siptember Fest in VT in a few weeks and Fiddlehead, Lawsons and the Alchemist will all be there. Sounds like a $$$+ day to me.

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

Percy HArvin adds a nasty dimension to the Seahawks…If he could only last the whole season…. Damn impressive squad you have there, Snow…

  22. RicksFork Says:

Totally agree MrP, but I would say he adds nasty dimnsion(s). Running the ball out of the backfiled, sweeps, WR screens and as a more traditional receiver. That dude is about as versatile as they come. Not to mention the kick return game. The back to back spin moves he made on a kick return last night were awesome. As a Giants fan with not much to look forward to, I have definitely taken an interest in my adopted citys team.

  23. marcoesq Says:

SEA only lost 1 game at Century last 2yrs. Safe to say toughest place to play in NFL right now.

Wilson has looked good so far in 2014. If he cracks into elite QB territory, watch out.

  24. Mr. Palmer Says:

Giants fane here as well , Ricks…. Very concerned this year.. thinking 5-11, 6-10..

Offensive lines woes will again doom Eli and Coughlin. I think the defense will be improved, especially in secondary.. Again, lack of pass rush may spell doom anyway..

Brady is a great player..Reality is that he has very little to work with outside of a constantly banged up Gronk.. Pretty indifferent to his greatness however…. I mean, Eli outplayed him on the big stage….Twice…. think about that?
