Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

go birds. here is my philadelphia prediction- 9-7, win the nfc east (only because the nfc east is, again, the nfc least), and the eagles will win one playoff game and then be eliminated. i am looking forward to this season. philly football will be fun.

Pretty indifferent to his greatness however…. I mean, Eli outplayed him on the big stage….Twice…. think about that?

^i agree with this palmer. my buddy (another philly guy) and i were driving back to colorado after riding in ogden, ut and listening to super bowl XLII on sirius. we were both rooting for the giants. it was the only time in my life where i was genuinely excited for the giants and their fans. when the game was over, my buddy looked at me and said, “lets never talk of this again.” eagles fans rooting for the giants.

@Chris, I was just noticing how much better Saturday set two works for me if I spin the whole thing and consider each jam as part of the whole and not by itself. Individually I find those jams a bit incomplete feeling. In sequence it’s a pretty bomb multi phase jam set.

@Phishm, dvr is the only way to watch sports. Especially football. The commercials are insane.

  3. aj Says:

Ah, football season has begun. See you all in the spring, ha.

^this is true. my friend and i would ski all day, he would record the game, we would watch it, fast forward commericals and with a few minutes left be in real time. the best way to watch football, for sure.

I’ll need to see Brady suck for a whole season before I knock him off the elite list. First ballot hall of famer.

Wilson might already be elite level. What’s he bad at? Guy has the most important quality, the killer decision making quickly while under pressure.

Also have no homer interest in any team except for against the cowboys.

  6. MrCompletely Says:

@aj, it’ll go on pause when fall tour starts

  7. RicksFork Says:

Hard times as a Giants fan @Palmer. When I get down though I just talk shit to all of my Pats fan friends about the last two times we met in the Super Bowl and then I feel better.

Right on MrC with the Saturday Set 2 as a whole. In person the DWD>WTU felt like one organic piece of music. I truly thought that in person that was the superior set 2 of the 3. Excessive playback has me leaning towards night 3 set 2, but in the moment that was one of the most uplifting and meaningful sets I have seen in a long time. Coulda been the droogz talking though.

  8. Chris Says:

If you guys dig the carini I bet you’d also dig the Light from 8.4.13. That was my favorite trey/fish slaying the guitar jam from the entire year last year. The interplaybetween the two and the confidence and ideas from trey was spot on. Energy> runaway jim was nasty too. Also the best version of stealing time played. I mention that because I never see that Light talked about on peeps best of lists

  9. aj Says:

I’m just jokin around. After doing a FF league last year and learning a bit more about football I can now at least understand and appreciate what people are talking about. I also know that I am not personally interested in football, just does not connect, but anything that brings people together for fun and community is alright in my book. Go Bears.

  10. MrCompletely Says:

Philly could be anywhere from okay to fantastic, but they’re by far the most interesting team in the league for sure. I suspect they might be pretty good. But I do have a bit of a Chip Kelly fanboy thing going

  11. aj Says:

Sat set 2 was def a hands in the air landing spiritual ufo’s kinda set, for sure.

  12. sumodie Says:

PhamB, haven’t replayed Dick’s either. Still floating on afterglow and no time to go jogging just yet, my fav way to replay phish

Seun Kuti knows how to work a crowd, no matter the size. Gave back as much ass-shaking energy as I could. Almost two hours of hot afrobeat from a helluva 12 piece band fronted by Seun’s magnetic leadership.

I’ve tasked G with trying to shake ass like the two earthquaking female backup singers; hard to watch those two for too long before my back begins to spasm

What’s this about commercials? I watch soccer, so I’m not really sure what you all are complaining about…

  14. Sex&City Says:

Glad Friday is here and I will soon be able to rest off last weekend. I’m starting to re-listen to the shows and was about to start with the Carini but got caught up on What’s the use?… LOVING IT! Pretending like i’m working with my cup of coffee in hand. Happy Friday!

  15. Stoney Case Says:

Chriseyore, I love that BGCA set and pimped it tons last year. Miner wasn’t super high on it, so the phlemings didn’t follow suit. Some serious psych rock. Type Hard To Figure.

  16. DavidSilver Says:

Da Bears. Like to see how Lovie and McCown do in Tampa. Love that dude. Hope he succeeds.

  17. wolfmansfather Says:

MIA – take a break from the site. just a few minutes. try it out

  18. MiA Says:

    ^obviously a Tom Brady lover…

  19. Stoney Case Says:

Green Bay Packers are toast this year. Aaron Rodgers is scared to throw against Richard Sherman. They’re just basically scared.

  20. phlorida phan Says:

Lovie is solid, McCown struggled at times in the preseason, but all he has to do is get the ball close enough. Mike Evans being 6-7, V. Jack at 6-6, and TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins be like 6-7 also…..Just throw that thang up! Bucs D should be top half of the league for sure. Hoping for a 8-8 season.

Can’t get “Do You Believe In Life After Love” out of my head, thanks brahs.

  21. Sex&City Says:

Yikes… just when I was excited to discuss Phish… now I have to get the ESPN channel…

  22. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

@stoney and chris- i am with you both on 8/4/13- i also really pamped 8/2/13 as a solid two setter. that whole gorge>hollywood run is very good phish.

  23. tela's_muff Says:

as amazing as the Carini>Light was, I’d put the drop from Disease into WTU, and the following performance of WTU as my second fav highlight of the weekend (next to Simple). They played it with such power. Felt every note of that song. Spinning around looking at the crew, everybody else was def feelin it. such an amazing group experience.

ah, football season again. 5 months of listening to AJ explain how little football means to him. well, at least until Christmas comes… haha. just playin. condiments FTW.

  24. Stoney Case Says:

Heady the Gorge just crushes! Spun with Butter and was reminded of the prowess. RnR from 8/2 was the bizness

  25. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

who’s got my halloween? i have an 11/1 and an 11/2 to trade for your halloween plus cash difference.
