Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

Chering in the groove is in the heart.

  2. MiA Says:

    ^agree 100% Telas.

As was quickly said by RicksFork post Nt 3:

    Simple = best jam
Disease>WTU, best couplet (tough, cause the Ghost is damn good).
    Night 3, best whole show.

  3. aj Says:

Haha, nah. I’ve made peace with football and Christmas, all good – turns out you can just opt out of both. Now lets all discuss why the whale sucks for the fifth year.

  4. Sex&City Says:

@Tela… Glad it wasn’t just me that really felt WTU. I think I need to do a better job at taking in the music and remembering it. I seem to have to be reminded by listening again. Maybe next run we can ask Kitty Kat to move so there are no distractions.

  5. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

@Tela… Glad it wasn’t just me that really felt WTU.

^i think about 20,000 people also really felt that wtu, sex&city- shit was the real deal.

@stoney- rock and roll was from 8/3- it was hot. it was the savior of 8/3.

  6. tela's_muff Says:

    mmmmm….whale talk…

i’m good at not being distracted apparently. or i just knock people out of my way.

  7. Mr. Palmer Says:

I stopped listening to 2013 after it was beaten over my head on this site that it sucked….. I kid, Fall 2013 crushes. Love the summer jams as well.

Don’t worry AJ with the start of football season it means that basketball’s season is only a month away. Those Bulls should be a bit better this year with Gasol and a one-legged D. Rose back in the mix.

As for me, my football team from my youth, is now only talked about in national surveys debating whether or not its name is racist. Plus, we have a QB who thinks he’s a hall of famer, but is embroiled in a QB controversy and we’re not even through Week 1.

Blazers can’t get back to the hardwood fast enough.

  10. Stoney Case Says:

Packers fans still licking their sacks after that dogging?

Lumpy, did we meet before this weekend? Let’s hang in the future. Solid guy that Lumpy. And where was Random and Heady all damn weekend? The Stoney Snub train? Next year you won’t be able to avoid me. Just ask Tela and AJ. We become magnetized post snubbings.

  11. MiA Says:

Anyone remember where this is from?

  12. verno329 Says:

Frustrating game for this Packers fan to watch. Thought we hung in well in the first half but abandoning the running game was a poor choice. The D was, once again, the problem. And depth. Every year it seems like we lose a couple key cogs to injury that we have no replacement for. Frustrating.

Don’t understand what the big deal is about avoiding Sherman. He’s hardly the first corner in history who hasn’t had the ball thrown his way. Its not a new strategy. People avoided Revis like that for years. Pack was smart to send Boykin out on Sherman’s side and leave Cobb and Nelson on the other corners. Didn’t pay off because Seattle rarely misses tackles and our O line gave up too much.

Would have thought the Packers would have continued to use the no huddle quick attack they used all preseason to minimize the noise factor as much as they could. Still think the Pack will win their division but if they have play in Seattle or San Fran in the playoffs then we’re likely to see a similar outcome.

At least there wasn’t another Fail Mary

  13. MiA Says:

    Maybe not… huh.

  14. dorn76 Says:

Take a break from posting links for a minute, MiA.

  15. tela's_muff Says:

fuck, that’s what i’m sayin Stoney. i tried to avoid you but kept bumping into you. although i think you snubbed me this year.

D2 first set really kinda blew. still had fun, but yikes. liked the start of the other two.

    Llama, Undermind, Stash
    Curtain With, Wombat

  16. Stoney Case Says:

Verno! Spoken like a true homer! Sherman is not Revis. Or Deon! Strength vs strength. Your team ignored half the field! Made defense easier to play. It was pathetic to watch as a fan of the game.

Rare day for a Lions fan to chirp up! We go 2-0 for the first time in forever vs the Pack this year!

  17. stapes Says:

Any other CO BBers trying for Dylan tix at 10?

  18. phlorida phan Says:

Just need to burn a timeout MiA, it’s only the first half.

  19. MrCompletely Says:

Sherman is bad ass. Not quite Revis in his prime maybe but people keep testing him and losing.

  20. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

yeah stoney, i was hopping to meet more new faces, although i did meet a few new folks, but very briefly. we have a hard time getting to lot at a reasonable hour. we don’t go in until the second before show time. i am on the opposite show schedule as most people. a kid and a laid back lady will do that.

  21. MiA Says:

    I definitely fumbled there.

  22. Sex&City Says:

I thought Dylan was dead but may have to pick some up!

  23. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

i would try for you stapes, but i left my wallet at home- no card with me today. i would definitely be going to that show if i wasn’t going to phish. it will be wonderful.

  24. Mr. Palmer Says:

Packers just always put their third best receiver on Sherman’s side. The truly great CB take the #1 WO and follows him all over the field…

Packers simply put Nelson and Cobb on the opposite side.. Made perfect sense.. Sherman stays on his side.. Phishm could be the opposing WO and Sherman would be sticking him…

Problem is that the rest of SEA secondary is excellent as well.. Pick your poison.

  25. Stoney Case Says:

Alas it’s true. Telas rolled out the red carpet and Stoney’s #RentalCarFailure put us in snub mode.
