Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

Ha. Yea I’d like to see him once more before he is dead. Said the same thing 10 years ago.

  3. Stoney Case Says:

Packers get smoked and the BB defends their game plan. Wow. It IS like whale talk around here!

  4. Sex&City Says:

@Stapes… I’m on it. Didn’t even realize he was coming here. You looking for just 1 ticket?

  5. Chris Says:

Yeah Heady, I agree about 8.2. Solid first set and I really like that dwd and especially the woo’d out spacefunkrock seven below. Ever since 6.20.04 set 2 seven below opener ive wished for that song to be played in set 2 of any show. This version is awesome

  6. stapes Says:

I’m grabbing 2. Don’t think it will be an issue though. We’ll see.

  7. MrCompletely Says:

eh I dunno about the overally game plan. I thought execution more the issue for the Packers really. Seattle doesn’t have a whole lot of weaknesses so you pretty much just gotta line up and beat ’em.

the basic problem the Packers had was that Seattle is a significantly better football team then they are right now.

  8. verno329 Says:

Throwing to Sherman to prove they aren’t scared of him is like refusing the help a tackle block a fearsome outside pass rusher out of pride. Foolishness.

Sherman is a beast but I’m so tired of hearing how he made the play that sent them to the Super Bowl last year as if the LB coming in to actually make the interception was just an afterthought. Sherman made a great play but if the LB isn’t hustling his ass to catch it, its simply an incompletion and SF has another chance at the TD. But then the LB didn’t scream on TV afterward so I guess his play wasn’t as important.

“the basic problem the Packers had was that Seattle is a significantly better football team then they are right now.”

Exactly. An O line that is suspect to start with loses its RT and has to bring in a bum and their already low chances to come out with a win go down dramatically. Assuming SEA can avoid injuries they will be tough to bear.

  11. Stoney Case Says:

C, it’s not just that Rodgie didn’t throw over there. I don’t think he even looked! It made a potent, lethal defense able to only have to cover half the field! Pack would lose either way. But go down swinging! A pump fake! An over throw! Don’t play scared.

People where down with that BGCA 13 Light (8/4/13). Miner thought that was one of the better shows that year. Though we was all about that Jim. DF and AW were both big fans of the last little trippy soundscape part that closed it out. Sumo shared an article comparing that version to Mwandishi’s Sextant even. People forget.

That was a great Light, but @Chris, it wasn’t a super long form version, and I thought that was your complaint about said Dick’s jams.

Well I was wrong. No luck it appears. Damn bots!!!

BTW it’s not true that Sherman always just plays his side. He shadowed Boldin last year and shut him down all over the field. They just save that as a surprise/switcheroo. In general they just trust their depth and play cover 3 or whatever and it’s worked okay so far.

I did like the initial GB approach, hurry up with lots of runs. The only semi weakness Seattle has on D is depth so making them work is the path. You’ll see more of that against SEA this year for sure. But once you fall behind it’s tough cause the pass rush can just blaze and they don’t really miss tackles so they don’t care about the runs when they’re up 10+

Don’t think Rogers ever plays scared even when maybe he should. But that kind of thing you mention Stoney, that’s part of the execution problems I was talking about. GB was not sharp. As the inferior team they needed to play great and didn’t. Seattle both is better and played better (though not perfect).

Is that some new casting couch Gordo is on. Brazzers very porny, hide the woman and children!

  17. MrCompletely Says:

BGCA Jim a fun little jam. Good moment. Creative

  18. MrCompletely Says:

I would never physically touch anything with a brazzers logo on it. like drinking ebola cola.

  19. Sex&City Says:

hey Stapes… I have 2 right now… want me to buy for you!?!??!

  20. Sex&City Says:

    you have 3 mins to reply… section 2 row 21… hurry 7up!

  21. Sex&City Says:

    50 seconds!!!!

  22. MrCompletely Says:

Earl Thomas punt fumble best thing that could have happened to Seattle, because maybe it’ll make the coach reconsider the insane concept of putting their most pivotal secondary player (yes more than Chancellor or Sherman) in that injury-prone situation.

  23. stapes Says:

    Do it!!!!

  24. snow Says:

great convo @124 with Poog/MiA/Umbrellas/MrC and MiA wins it!

“I didn’t know … Fishman sounded practiced on his jam.”

Bad news. The Wilson chant played during the broadcast was a recording of the stadium from las year. still fun. The chant is done in the stadium. It gets the crowd roiled up before the offense takes the field. TRey screwed up that part of his wish. The chant should happen after wilson scores. like they did on the broadcast. damn it trey.

the thing about the seahawks is that percy makes our offense elite. if he gets hurt, we come plummeting back to earth. Still one of the best but the shit they are doing with percy on fly sweeps and passing to lockette on read option play action play!? my lawd. basically unstoppable over the course of a game.

  25. MrCompletely Says:

I don’t know if it’s unstoppable but no one has stopped it yet that’s for sure. Making peeps look stupid. You know PC has like 10 counter actions lined up behind it for when teams start to adjust too.
