Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

Roberta Flack’s groovy jazzy first album. Featuring Ron Carter. Noice.

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

Perhaps in a specific game Sherman plays one man….I don’t follow that closely to know… But 90% of the time he plays one side… As opposed to a Patrick Peterson or a Revis , who basically matchup up with your number 1 WR and shadow him for 60 minutes…

Sea, because of the greatness and depth of the their D, don’t need Sherman to do that..

As an opponent though, I think it’s a smart move to just put your best Wr and slot guy on the opposite side and see what happens.. Might not work, but probably best option.. GB issue was their line was shit after Buluga( Sp?) went out

  4. MrCompletely Says:

Ron C going pretty hard on this thing

  5. aj Says:

I had no idea the Meghan Trainor “all about that bass” tune is a Contact cover. I guess it makes sense that contact and bass. Maybe a Contact>AATB this fall?

  6. dorn76 Says:

    Gentlemanly, scholarly, cuddly, muscular, C!

  7. IrieWalton Says:

You’re also now signed up for some nice furry and brony action, Dorn.

What’s up with hating on the Joy call?

That spot was begging for a ballad to come in on top of the glitch. I mean Christ, wasn’t that the only set II breather of the entire run?

  9. MrCompletely Says:

    also Cat Facts

  10. Cubic Pooper Says:

    did someone say cuddly?

  11. lumpyhead Says:

I’d say that’s just a matter of haters gonna hate. Perfect joy placement right there.

  12. dorn76 Says:

Those will both be duplicate subscriptions. Thx for looking out though.

  13. MrCompletely Says:

too much mellow stuff in parts of this album but the leonard cohen cover is great

    Similar to Contact? Who cares

  15. Stoney Case Says:

    Joy was perfect.

Palmer. Mayhem not impressed with the low win Giants predictions.

  16. Mr. Palmer Says:

Phil with a 10 day residency at the Cap… 5 Different lineups

  17. MrCompletely Says:

why the fuck would the giants be good this year

  18. aj Says:

Same version, Marco. Thought it was funny that the chorus is the same (very simple and basic) as Contact.

  19. Stoney Case Says:

I sense a new post coming.

  20. Mr. Palmer Says:

    huh? @ Stoney

Hey, if the G-men show up on Monday night and score 35 against the Lions, I’ll change my tune… I need to see it.. The new offense looks horrific thus far.

@ricks- so crystal is the biggest and fanciest mountain. lots of great BC. clearly the primo place acreage wise. the top of the mountain is exposed and feels it.

Baker runs completely on diesel. no high speed lifts. prolly half the acreage of crystal. the road there is a mess. but it’s chill as fuck. mostly burners. almost always snowing. the terrain options are endless. so many chutes and trees and side country. the views of shuksan are incredible on bluebird days.
crystal is objectively the better mountain but I always have more fun at baker.

  22. Sex&City Says:

HAHAHA, I had no idea about this song… I woke up one morning in November and I realized I love you!

  23. Stoney Case Says:

Mayhem says they always do well when everyone counts them out. And Eli is an elite quarterback. And they don’t have two bad years in a row.

  24. Berkeley Head Says:

Snow, is there room for one more on your Mt. the Baker tour? I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours; we can do a home and home. Do you know Squawlywood & Schralpine Meadows? We’re shooting for the 4th “worst year ever” in a row down here…. The PNW (including Whistler) usually gets the goods early season better than most, no?

Ricks was that you in the Portillo shirt? That’s serious stuff on the lookers left high traverse

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    It goes Contact>K-Pop>AATB

Don’t leave out the south koreans, yo
