Miner’s Dicks Picks

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

8.30.13 (Jake Silco)

Here are my selections for the top 10 jams in Dick’s history.

10. “Carini” 8.31.12 I

This surprise jam, early in the first frame, set the tone for the FYF show.

9. “Runaway Jim” 8.31.12 II

A rare siting of an exploratory, second set “Runaway Jim” in the modern era. This one is kind of aimless for a while but comes together in the second half. Some might rank this higher, but it just doesn’t hit me very hard at all. It’s kind of messy and all over the place.

8. “Sand” 8.30.13 II

This “Sand” opens up into a gorgeous passage of Phish. While not quite 2012’s version, this “Sand” is quite good in its own right.

7. “Piper” 9.4.11 II

An airtight excursion that passes through several themes, one that Page laces with his magic Theremin.

6. “Sand” 9.2.12 II

A far more fluid jam than I ever gave it credit for, and sick throughout.

5. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.13 II

A defining moment of late-summer ’13, as the band set the course for Fall.

4. “Chalk Dust Torture” 8.31.12 II

An incredibly cohesive monster with some of Trey’s most inspired work of the year.

3. “Tweezer” 9.3.11 II

One of the bands most triumphant moments in 2011.

2. “Undermind” 8.31.12 II

This set closer confirmed that something special was going at Dick’s in 2012.

1. “Light” 9.1.12 II

The mac daddy highlight from Phish’s years at Dick’s. It’s just so good.

    That is pretty funny.

Said it once, why say it again? Because it’s fucking true:

Contact is the best non-jammed Phish song.

  2. aj Says:

    Contact*

    *w/Korean lyrics

@snow – I have heard great things about Baker and can often see it on my way up to my companies HQ in Snoqualmie. Gotta get out there one of these trips, but all the guys I ski with prefer Stevens so we usually end up there. I absolutely love skiing in Washington and Baker sounds like my kind of place.

I’m still waiting amidst all of this nfl talk for the epcot review of the cheese and the gang set from lock’n last night. I can only imagine how that went 😐

  5. snow Says:

really? different strokes I guess. the first two minutes of joy was like running into my mom at an orgy. it was fine once the solo starts that but shit is jarring.
Songs about depression and lost sisters are just too much in the peak of set for me.

  6. Sex&City Says:

@garret… contact live can be so damn good!

  7. BingosBrother Says:

Webcasts with the wife were better when Trey could climax a jam. I like to be hooked up with the boys nah mean.

  8. lumpyhead Says:

well boys, gettin drunk as fuck tonight.

new season of Trailer Park Boys is on the netflix

  9. BingosBrother Says:

I run into your mom repeatedly at orgies. Re. Peat. Ed. Ly.

  10. jtran Says:

    crustal

  11. lumpyhead Says:

    Stoney – we’d howdy’d but hadn’t shook in Chicago I believe.

Feeling’s mutual, see you this fall without a doubt.

  12. garretcorncob Says:

Peak of the set? I would have thought the peak was somewhere in the 35 minutes of Tweezer > Sand > Piper that preceeded the Joy.

No ballads without at least a 40 minute improv sequence beforehand, dammit!

Not that I’m trying to talk you out of having not enjoyed it during the moment. Just ridiculing you for having felt that way.

  13. jtran Says:

early season – targhee or alta. or wolf creek if they get one of those random big storms early on.

  14. Joe Says:

Running into your mom at an orgy is too perfect. You may be uncomfortable with seeing her but other people might love it

    http://bestsnow.net/

really awesome website for snow geeks. about as in depth snowfall numbers as you can find, with full statistical analysis and discussion on la nina/el nino

  16. marcoesq Says:

Jtran, swell coming in this weekend right? My buddies got some last week, great pics from Trestles.

  17. RicksFork Says:

@jtran – is that you in those FB ski pics?

  18. marcoesq Says:

Currently have Rudolph as my starting TE with Gates as a backup. Guy in my league trying to trade Bennett straight up for Rudolph. Thoughts? Bennett dropped off the face of the planet last half of 2013

  19. MrCompletely Says:

I hear you on the wifecast dynamics @bingos. Sunday was a crankin’ beverages set though, because we were taking a break for bong rips & pen hits when Joy dropped.

  20. MrCompletely Says:

my mom is such a drag at orgies. smells like cigarettes. that shit was okay in the seventies I guess but it’s a big faux pas these days

  21. snow Says:

Still have found memories of the beverages i enjoyed on the couch during tahoe light webcast. Still not sure how that magic happened. praise jah.

@Berekely- yeah, we often get a mid novemeber storm cycles that drops 6ft in a couple days and it’s game on. We sometimes hike for scraps in late october. That said, baker isn’t really in its prime till february. then you can take all the sneaky tree routes. So c’mon on up mang.

Only places I’ve been are heavenly and kirkwood down that way. really want to get to alpine meadows. Not sure travelling for turns is the cards for me this winter but I would love to get down there soon. I really like what I have seen so far.

@Ricks- stevens is great. it’s the tweener mt of ctystal/baker. I had a mid week pass there a couple times in college. it’s crazy on the weekends but weekdays… the pow on the backside lasts all day. my main complaint is that it’s kind of flat compared to baker. for some reason I find it less fun than baker. But one of friends took me down there a bunch a couple years ago and I really enjoyed it. runs on the back side are also long.

Whistler is the king of them all and with that comes the people and expensive lift tickets. used to cost $45 with the conversion and discounts. now it’s $90 and the lift lines are the longest in the region. Still get more vertical in a day there than baker.

bascially shit is pretty great all around in cascadia.

  22. jtran Says:

    @ricks

yea, except the ones that are my slf 😉

    @marco

yea, starting to show on the buoys this morning. surfing sunset cliffs tomorrow then newport sunday

  23. RicksFork Says:

Went Cat skiing near Whistler last winter and it was beyond legit. We were getting almost as high as the helos, but got more than twice the runs in. I’m a northeast skier through and through, but the PNW has some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen. Big Sky may be my ski destination winner though. What a place.

  24. RicksFork Says:

@jtran – those are some sick shots. That looks like the blower that I only dream of.

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Contact is the best non-jammed Phish song

My wife would straight cut you for this statement. She is known to boo and double finger salute the stage for Contact. Hands down, her least favorite tune. It is quite comical after you get past the dirty looks from the people around you, actually.
