Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

Great list. I did this a while back. Really fun to do.

    I was struggling with 2011

  3. Light Glaze Says:

Had some very solid shows. Superball, gorge, element show. But ny run was rough.

Nice. UIC 8/15/11 was, IMO, a real breakthrough. Like they had just about perfected the Storage Jamming style, and Page had made a huge leap in his theramin skills and tactful integration of it. And a loosely “themed” set to boot. Honestly, it was the perfect juxtaposition to a supremely fun first set, and my favorite 2011 show. I had high expectations too. UIC 98 is among my top 5 overall phish experiences.

Nice, thanks for this post. My knowledge of early 3.0 is particularly spotty.

Interesting little searchable database for info on Dead songs/lyrics etc, called “White Gum”: https://www.whitegum.com/intro.htm

Even more interesting, the dude who made the site put his CV on there and it looks like he’s a semi retired British civil servant operating at the highest levels of the establishment in UK government (“Prime Minister’s Independent Adviser on Ministerial Interest”, etc.)

Jumpin in here to say wow new post.

Got some read back to do.

I will say that Spafford was very good last week in CO. In fact, the only thing derivative about the evening was my behavior, which took inspiration from some of my more infamous wook down moments at past Phish shows.

Skiing, altitude and my live concert pregame routine do not mix, kids.

landed a decent LP copy of Eddie Harris’s High Voltage . live album from 1969. generous use of the echoplex. melvin jackson bass. jodie christian piano. billy hart on drums. highly recommended if you dig the OG funk jazz scene.

  24. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

Most of the bad rap is the actual sound of the band. ’09 sounds like they’re playing fisher price instruments – partly because of the SBDs?

  25. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

Anyway I never have and never will use the LivePhish App. Is the track list written out anywhere?
